REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . Deactivate air bag system before performing any repairs. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . For additional information on air bag systems, see AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. For 1998 models, see COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. For 1999 models, see COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Removal (Except 1998 Grand Cherokee)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. If equipped with automatic transmission, place shift lever in Park. Remove tilt lever (if equipped) by turning counterclockwise. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Using a small punch, press release pin on key cylinder. Remove key cylinder from steering column.
  2. Unplug harness connectors from ignition switch. Using Tamper-Proof Torx Bit (SDMTR10), remove ignition switch mounting screw. Using a small screwdriver, push on lock tab and remove switch from steering column. (Scheme 1)

Installation

  1. Ensure shift lever is in Park. Turn ignition switch to ON position. (Scheme 2) Position switch on column, and install retaining screws. Tighten screws to 26 INCH lbs. (3 N.m).
  2. Connect ignition switch harness connectors. Install key cylinder in reverse order of removal. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

Removal (1998 Grand Cherokee)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. If equipped with automatic transmission, place shift lever in Park. Remove tilt lever (if equipped) by turning counterclockwise. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Using a small punch, press release pin on key cylinder. Remove key cylinder from steering column.
  2. Unplug harness connectors from ignition switch. Using Tamper-Proof Torx Bit (SDMTR10), remove ignition switch mounting screw. Using a small screwdriver, push on lock tab and remove switch from steering column. (Scheme 1)
  1. Rotate flag on rear of ignition switch until in RUN position. (Scheme 3) Fit tang on key cylinder into slots in ignition switch. Align slots. (Scheme 4)
  2. With key in cylinder, rotate key clockwise until retaining pin can be depressed. Install key cylinder into ignition switch by aligning retaining pin into retaining pin slot. (Scheme 5) Push key cylinder into switch until retaining pin engages. Turn key to OFF or LOCK position.
  3. On A/T models, ensure shift lever is in Park before attaching ignition switch to steering column. Before installing switch, park lock dowel pin must be properly indexed into park lock link, and ignition switch must be properly indexed into steering column. Place ignition switch in LOCK position. (Scheme 3)
  4. On A/T models, apply a light coating of grease to park lock dowel pin and slider linkage. Before installing switch, push slider linkage forward until it bottoms, then pull back about 1/4 inch. Grease column lock flag and shaft at end of flag. Place ignition switch into steering column opening. On A/T models, ensure park lock dowel pin on rear of ignition switch enters slot in park lock slider linkage. (Scheme 3)and (Scheme 6).
  5. Ensure flag on rear of switch is positioned above steering wheel lock lever. Align dowel pins on rear of switch with holes on side of steering column. Install 3 ignition switch mounting screws. Tighten screws to 22-30 INCH lbs. (2.5-3.4 N.m). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

Removal & Installation (Cherokee & Wrangler)

  1. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable. On 1999 models, remove knee blocker from instrument panel. On 1998 models, raise tilt column to highest position (if equipped). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Depress ignition lock cylinder retaining tumbler through access hole in bottom half of steering column shroud. Pull ignition lock cylinder and key out of ignition lock housing. Move tilt column to full lowered position. (Scheme 7)
  2. On all models, remove upper and lower shroud halves from steering column. Remove upper and lower screws securing multifunction switch water shield to steering column. Carefully pull water shield and bracket far enough from steering column to clear boss below multifunction switch lever. see scheme 12
  3. Lift shield, bracket and multifunction switch away from steering column to allow access to switch wire connectors. Move tilt column upward (if equipped) to ease multifunction switch removal. Unplug wire harness connectors from multifunction switch. Remove multifunction switch and shield as assembly.
  4. To install reverse removal procedure. Tighten screws to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-1280-S31923444892000031300000).

Removal & installation (1998 Grand Cherokee)

  1. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-1280-S33801152332000031300000) . Remove tilt column lever (if equipped). Using flat-blade tool, pry gently around edges of switch pod bezels and remove. Remove lower instrument panel/knee blocker. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds. Remove lower cover on fixed steering column. Loosen steering column upper bracket nuts. Remove upper cover on fixed steering column to gain access to multifunction switch.
  2. Using Tamper-Proof Torx Bit (TTXR20B2), remove multifunction switch retaining screws. Carefully pull multifunction switch away from column. Loosen harness connector screw from multifunction switch. Screw will remain in connector. Disconnect connector. remove multifunction switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal & Installation (1999 Grand Cherokee)

Note. Multifunction switch is removed with clockspring as AN assembly.

  1. Position front wheels straight ahead. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable air bag. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-1280-S33801152332000031300000) . Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL, HORN PAD & CLOCKSPRING»(ref-1280-S32354740842000031300000) .
  2. Remove instrument cluster bezel. Remove instrument panel knee blocker. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds. Disconnect multifunction switch electrical connectors. Remove screw under multifunction switch. Slide multifunction switch and clockspring off column as assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove lower instrument panel trim. Remove steering column attaching nuts, and lower steering column. Disconnect park-lock cable from steering column and remove cable from bracket. see scheme 4
  2. Remove center console. Remove moldings, panels, accelerator pedal bracket and carpet screws. Pull carpet back for access to gear selector lever bellcrank. Disconnect park-lock cable and remove cable. see scheme 4 To install, reverse removal procedure. Before completing installation, check park-lock cable adjustment to ensure proper operation. See «PARK-LOCK CABLE»(ref-1280-S06504822682000031300000) under ADJUSTMENTS.

Removal (Cherokee & Wrangler)

  1. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable and remove air bag module. «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-1280-S33801152332000031300000) . Remove steering wheel. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds.sEE «STEERING WHEEL, HORN PAD & CLOCKSPRING»(ref-1280-S32354740842000031300000) .
  2. Remove lower instrument panel/knee blocker. Remove upper column coupler pinch bolt. Remove relay box, and position aside. Remove upper and lower steering column covers and tilt lever (if equipped).
  3. Remove steering column braces and column bracket mounting nuts. Lower steering column. Unplug wiring harness connectors from steering column switches. Disconnect park-lock cable from steering column. Remove steering column.

Align and install steering column to coupler. DO NOT apply force to top of steering column. Ensure ground clip remains on steering column mounting bracket. Reconnect all wiring harnesses, ensuring proper routing to avoid pinching. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.

Removal (Grand Cherokee)

  1. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable and remove air bag. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-1280-S33801152332000031300000). Remove steering wheel. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds. See «STEERING WHEEL, HORN PAD & CLOCKSPRING»(ref-1280-S32354740842000031300000).
  2. Remove instrument cluster bezel. Remove knee blocker. On 1998 models, disconnect multifunction switch connector. (Scheme 8) On 1999 models, remove multifunction switch screw and slide multifunction switch and clock spring off column as assembly. (Scheme 9) On all models, turn ignition switch to ON position. Remove shifter interlock cable from ignition lock cylinder housing.
  3. Remove steering column coupler bolt and slide coupler off column shaft. Remove column mounting nuts and braces. Lower steering column. Unplug necessary wire harness connections. Remove steering column.

Align and install steering column to coupler. DO NOT apply force to top of steering column. Ensure ground clip remains on steering column mounting bracket. Reconnect all wiring harnesses, ensuring proper routing to avoid pinching. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.

  1. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Lock steering wheel. Disable air bag. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-1280-S33801152332000031300000). Remove air bag module. Disconnect wire harness connectors from steering wheel. Remove steering wheel.
  2. Remove steering column covers and shrouds. Disconnect instrument panel wire connectors. Using window in multifunction switch shield, pry plastic latches on clockspring to release from steering column housing. NOTE: If clockspring plastic latches are broken, ensure broken pieces are removed from steering column upper housing.
  3. Remove clockspring. If clockspring is to be reused, maintain centering by inserting a rigid wire through index hole to lock clockspring rotor to clockspring case. see scheme 1for index hole location.

Note. On 1999 Grand Cherokee, clockspring is integral with multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH .

  1. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Lock steering wheel. Disable air bag. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-1280-S33801152332000031300000). Remove screws securing air bag module to steering wheel. Pull air bag module away from steering wheel to unplug wire harness connections on back of module. CAUTION: Failure to position wheels in straight-ahead position with steering wheel locked while removing steering wheel could damage clockspring and/or require clockspring to be readjusted.
  2. Remove air bag module. Disconnect steering wheel electrical connectors. Remove steering wheel. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds. Disconnect wire harness connectors from clockspring. Disconnect wire harness connector between clockspring and instrument panel wire harness near base of steering column. Lift clockspring locating fingers from steering column as necessary, and remove clockspring.
  3. Reverse removal procedures for installation. Ensure clockspring is positioned properly in relation to steering wheel. See «CLOCKSPRING CENTERING»(ref-1280-S41598962192000031300000) under ADJUSTMENTS. see scheme 2

Note. Clockspring cannot be repaired. It must be replaced.

  1. On all models except 1999 Grand Cherokee, snap clockspring onto steering column. If clockspring centering adjustment is disturbed, adjust clockspring before installing steering wheel. See «CLOCKSPRING CENTERING»(ref-1280-S41598962192000031300000) under ADJUSTMENTS. On all models, connect clockspring wiring connectors. Install steering column covers. Install knee blocker.
  2. Position steering wheel on steering column. Ensure flats on steering wheel hub fit formations on inside of clockspring. Pull clockspring, cruise control switch (if equipped) and horn wires through lower large holes and upper small holes in steering wheel.
  3. Install steering wheel retaining nut and tighten to 45 ft. lbs. (61 N.m). Connect horn and cruise control wires (if equipped).
  4. Connect clockspring wire to air bag module. To ensure complete connector connection, latching arms must be visible on top of connector housing. DO NOT connect negative battery cable at this time. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-1280-S33801152332000031300000) .

Note. If installing new clockspring, DO NOT remove locking pin until clockspring is installed in steering column. Perform clockspring centering procedure if locking pin is removed before clockspring is installed. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. With turn signal switch in neutral position, slide centered clockspring over steering column upper shaft until clockspring contact engage column housing. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
