SERVICE PRECAUTIONS

These precautions should be observed when working with air bag systems

  1. To avoid possible injury from accidental air bag deployment after repairs, turn ignition on from passenger side (except dual air bag equipped vehicles). On dual air bag equipped vehicles, disconnect and isolate negative battery terminal. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure no one is inside vehicle and, connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition off. Ensure air bag warning light is operating properly and no system faults are indicated.
  2. Always wear safety glasses when servicing/handling air bag.
  3. When placing an air bag on a bench or other surface, always face air bag and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if accidentally deployed.
  4. Electrical sources should never be allowed near inflator on back of air bag module.
  5. DO NOT probe connectors with an ohmmeter unless specifically instructed to do so. Ohmmeters are self-powered and could deploy air bag(s).
  6. When carrying a live air bag module, trim cover should be pointed away from your body to minimize injury in case of accidental deployment.

DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. For 1998 models, see COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. For 1999 models, see COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
  1. To disable air bag system for repairs, ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable. WAIT at least 2 minutes after disconnecting negative battery cable before servicing air bag system.
  2. To activate air bag system, turn ignition switch to ON position and observe AIR BAG warning light. Warning light should come on for 6-8 seconds and then go out, indicating system is functioning properly. If warning light fails to illuminate, or illuminates and stays on, a system malfunction exists.

CLOCKSPRING CENTERING

CAUTIONIf rotating part of clockspring is not positioned properly with steering column and front wheels, clockspring failure may result. The following procedures must be used to center clockspring.

Except 1998 Grand Cherokee

  1. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove air bag module and steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL, HORN PAD & CLOCKSPRING»(ref-1280-S32354740842000031300000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Remove clockspring from steering column. Hold clockspring case in one hand in relation to its position in steering column. With other hand, rotate clockspring clockwise to end of it's travel. DO NOT apply excessive torque.
  3. On Cherokee and Wrangler, rotate rotor 2 1/2 turns counterclockwise from end of its travel. Clockspring is properly centered when clockspring rotor flats are horizontal and wire harness receptacle is at 6 o'clock position. (Scheme 10) To maintain centering until reinstalling clockspring in steering column, secure clockspring rotor to clockspring case by inserting stiff wire through index hole located at 11 o'clock position on rotor. (Scheme 10)
  4. On 1999 Grand Cherokee, rotate hub 2 1/2 turns counterclockwise from end of its travel. Align arrows on clockspring hub and clockspring case to properly center clockspring. (Scheme 12) Secure clockspring hub to clockspring case to maintain centering until reinstalling in steering column.
  5. On all models, ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Reinstall clockspring in steering column. Install steering wheel. On Cherokee and Wrangler, tighten steering wheel retaining nut to 45 ft. lbs. (61 N.m). On 1999 Grand Cherokee, tighten steering wheel retaining nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 N.m). On all models, install air bag module. Tighten air bag module nuts to 90 INCH lbs. (10.2 N.m). DO NOT connect negative battery cable at this time. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-1280-S33801152332000031300000).

  1. Before proceeding, see «SERVICE PRECAUTIONS»(ref-1280-S05134723772000031300000). Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-1280-S33801152332000031300000).
  2. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove air bag module and steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL, HORN PAD & CLOCKSPRING»(ref-1280-S32354740842000031300000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Depress 2 plastic auto-locking tabs. (Scheme 11) Rotate clockspring rotor in clockwise direction to end of its travel. DO NOT apply excessive torque.
  3. From end of clockwise travel, rotate rotor 2 1/2 full turns in counterclockwise direction. Clockspring is centered when horn wire is at top and air bag module wire is at bottom. (Scheme 11)
  4. Install steering wheel. Tighten steering wheel retaining nut to 45 ft. lbs. (61 N.m). Install air bag module. Tighten air bag module nuts to 80-97 INCH lbs. (9-11 N.m). DO NOT connect negative battery cable at this time. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-1280-S33801152332000031300000).

PARK-LOCK CABLE

  1. Place gear selector in Park. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove shift lever bezel and center console for access to cable. Pull cable lock tab up to release cable. (Scheme 13) Pull cable forward, then release and press cable lock tab down until locked in place.
  2. Release button on shift handle should be locked. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Release button should now be unlocked, allowing movement of shift handle.
  3. Place gear selector in Neutral. If cable adjustment is correct, ignition switch cannot be turned to LOCK position. Perform same check with gear selector in Drive.
  4. Place gear selector in Park. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Shift handle release button should lock. If operation is not as specified, repeat step 1.

Note. Park-lock (shifter/ignition interlock) cable mechanism is used on models equipped with automatic transmission. Park-lock system locks shifter in Park when ignition switch is in LOCK or ACCESSORY position.
