BELT TENSION

Engines are equipped with serpentine belt. Belt adjustment is not necessary. There is a belt tension indicator (3 lines and pointer) below the automatic belt tensioner, next to A/C compressor. Ensure pointer is within wear limits (within the 3 lines).

PRELIMINARY CHECKS

Ensure generator drive belt is within wear limits on belt tensioner and battery is fully charged. Battery cables and connections must be in good condition.

S-Type

  1. Perform battery capacity test. If battery is okay, go to next step. If battery is not okay, replace battery. Recheck system for normal operation.
  2. Measure battery voltage with ignition off and no electrical loads on. If voltage is 12 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 12 volts, recharge battery. Recheck system for normal operation.
  3. Start engine and allow to idle. Measure battery voltage with no electrical loads on. If voltage is 13.5 volts or more go to next step. If voltage is less than 13.5 volts, go to step 5 .
  4. Turn ignition off. Turn ignition to RUN position. Measure resistance between generator case and negative battery terminal. If resistance less than 5 ohms, go to step 6 . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, clean and tighten generator mounting, engine-to-body ground strap and ground cable. Recheck system for normal operation.
  5. Start engine and allow to idle. Backprobe PCM and measure voltage between ground and PCM 60-pin connector PI1 terminal No. 5 (Gray/Red wire). If voltage is 12 volts or more go to next step. If voltage less than 12 volts, clean and tighten positive battery cable connections. Recheck system for normal operation.
  6. Start engine and allow to idle. Check charge warning light with engine operating. If warning light is illuminated, go to next step. If warning light is not illuminated, go to step 1 .
  7. Turn ignition off. Check generator connector PI42 for damage. If generator connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is damaged, repair as necessary. Recheck system for normal operation.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator connector PI42. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and generator connector PI42 terminal No. 2 (Green/Blue wire). If voltage is 10 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Green/Blue wire between generator and powertrain control relay No. 2 (located in front power distribution box, next to generator). If Green/Blue wire is okay, check fuse No. 11 (15-amp) located in front power distribution box. Install a new fuse if blown. Recheck system for normal operation.
  9. Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator connector PI42. Measure voltage between ground and generator connector PI42 terminal No. 1 (Red wire). If voltage is 10 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Red wire between generator and fuse No. 15 (5-amp) located in rear power distribution box, next to battery. Recheck system for normal operation.
  10. Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator connector PI42. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and generator connector PI42 terminal No. 3 (Gray/Red wire). If vehicle is equipped with M/T and voltage is 10 volts or more, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with A/T and voltage is 10 volts or more, replace generator. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Gray/Red wire between generator and PCM 60-pin connector PI1 terminal No. 5. Recheck system for normal operation.
  11. If vehicle is equipped with M/T, remove generator drive belt. Check generator pulley rotation. If generator pulley and shaft does not turn freely clockwise, replace generator. Recheck system for normal operation.
  1. Perform battery capacity test. If battery is okay, go to next step. If battery is not okay, replace battery. Recheck system for normal operation.
  2. Measure battery voltage with ignition off and no electrical loads on. If voltage is 12 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 12 volts, recharge battery. Recheck system for normal operation.
  3. Start engine and allow to idle. Measure battery voltage with no electrical loads on. If voltage is 13.8 volts or more go to next step. If voltage is less than 13.8 volts, go to step 5 .
  4. Start engine and allow to idle. Check charge warning light with engine running. If warning light is illuminated, go to step 7 under CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR IS ON WITH ENGINE RUNNING. If warning light is not illuminated, go to step 1 .
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator connector PI42. Measure voltage between ground and generator connector PI42 terminal No. 2 (Green/Blue wire). If voltage is 12 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 12 volts, repair Green/Blue wire between generator and powertrain control relay No. 2 (located in front power distribution box, next to generator). If Green/Blue wire is okay, check fuse No. 11 (15-amp) located in front power distribution box. Install a new fuse if blown. Recheck system for normal operation.
  6. Turn ignition off. Check generator connector PI42 for damage. If generator connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is damaged, repair as necessary. Recheck system for normal operation.
  7. Start engine and allow to idle. Measure battery voltage with no electrical loads on. If voltage is 13.8 volts or more go to next step. If voltage is less than 13.8 volts, replace generator. Recheck system for normal operation.
  8. Start engine and allow to idle. Check charge warning light with engine running. If warning light is illuminated, go to step 8 under CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR IS ON WITH ENGINE RUNNING. If warning light is not illuminated, go to step 1 .
  1. Start engine and allow to idle. Increase and hold engine speed to 1500 RPM. Measure battery voltage with no electrical loads on. If voltage less than 15 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 15 volts or more, replace generator. Recheck system for normal operation.
  2. Start engine and allow to idle. Check charge warning light with engine running. If warning light is illuminated, go to step 6 under CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR IS ON WITH ENGINE RUNNING. If warning light is not illuminated, go to step 1 under CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR IS ON WITH ENGINE OPERATION

Turn headlights on for 30 seconds to remove any surface charge from battery. Wait until voltage stabilizes. Turn ignition off and ensure no electrical loads are on. Connect negative lead of a voltmeter to negative battery cable clamp. Connect positive lead of voltmeter to positive battery cable clamp. Read and record battery voltage indicated on voltmeter. This is battery base voltage.

Connect voltmeter leads across battery terminals and measure battery voltage (base voltage). If battery voltage is less than 12.5 volts, recharge battery before test. Start engine and allow to idle. Increase engine speed and hold at 1500 RPM with no electrical loads on. Measure battery voltage. If battery voltage increase is less than 0.5 volt over base voltage, perform a load test on battery. If there is no voltage increase, go to GENERATOR DOES NOT CHARGE .

XJ8, XJR, XK8 & XKR

  1. Remove battery cover. Ensure all electrical loads are off and that engine is cool. Start engine and allow to idle. Disconnect negative battery cable. Measure voltage between battery negative cable and battery positive terminal. Generator output voltage should be 13-15 volts. When voltage has been measured, shut engine off. If generator is inoperative, engine will stall when negative battery cable is disconnected.
  2. Repeat test in step 1) using frame connection point for negative battery cable. Generator output voltage should be 13-15 volts. When voltage has been measured, shut engine off. If generator output voltage is less, clean cable connections or replace cable.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator 3-pin connector. Measure voltage between ground and generator 3-pin connector center terminal. Voltage should be battery voltage. If battery voltage is not present, check continuity between generator 3-pin connector center terminal and fuse No. 5 (10-amp). Repair as necessary.
