Valve Clearance Adjustment - General Procedures

1. Remove the camshafts. For additional information, refer to «Camshaft - In-Vehicle Procedures»(ref-311868-S33422267172009040700000) .
2. Use compressed air to remove the shims that require replacing. Blow compressed air between the shim edge and bucket to dislodge the shim.
3. Use the following formula to calculate the required shim thickness. Original shim thickness + measured clearance - desired clearance = required shim thickness.
4. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the replacement shim(s) and install.

Scheme 9

1. Remove the left hand valve cover. For additional information, refer to «Valve Cover LH - In-Vehicle Procedures»(ref-311868-S07764859192009040700000) .
2. Remove the right hand valve cover. For additional information, refer to «Valve Cover RH - In-Vehicle Procedures»(ref-311868-S32652954732009040700000) .
3. Rotate the engine clockwise to position the camshaft lobe away from the shim surface.
4. Using the feeler gauge set, measure the clearance between the camshaft and the shim surface. Record and check the readings. Scheme 10

1. Remove the timing chains. For additional information, refer to «Timing Drive Components - In-Vehicle Procedures»(ref-311868-S02176355282009040700000) .
2. Remove the camshaft bearing caps evenly.
3. Remove the camshafts.

Scheme 11

1. Install the camshafts.
2. Install the camshaft bearing caps in their original position. Install the camshaft bearing cap retaining bolts evenly. Tighten the retaining bolts in the sequence shown to 10 Nm.

4. Install the timing chains. For additional information, refer to «Timing Drive Components - In-Vehicle Procedures»(ref-311868-S02176355282009040700000) .
