PROGRAMMING
Note. New identity code must be entered whenever replacing or adding additional remote controller(s), or when replacing smart entrance control unit.
REMOTE CONTROLLER
- Close and lock all doors. Erase original identity code(s) by inserting and removing key from ignition switch more than 6 times within 10 seconds. Hazard warning lights will flash to confirm.
- Turn ignition switch to ACC position. Push any button on new remote controller once. identity code for new remote controller has now been entered. Hazard warning lights will flash to confirm.
- To enter additional remote controller identity code(s), lock, then unlock doors using door lock/unlock switch in power window main switch. Push any button on additional remote controller once. Hazard warning lights will flash to confirm. A maximum of 4 remote controller identity codes can be entered. If same identity code is entered more than once, the entry is ignored. To exit programming (identity entry) mode, unlock and open driver's door.
Front Doors
Disconnect harness connector from door switch to be tested. Using a DVOM, check for continuity between door switch terminals No. 1 and 2, then between terminal No. 3 and ground. (Scheme 2) Continuity should be present only when door is open. Replace door switch if it does not test as specified.
Rear Doors
Disconnect harness connector from door switch to be tested. Using a DVOM, ensure continuity is present between door switch terminal and ground only when door is open. Replace door switch if continuity is not as specified.
Back Door
Disconnect harness connector from back door switch. Using a DVOM, ensure continuity is present between back door switch terminals only when back door is open. Replace back door switch if continuity is not as specified.
Scheme 2
IGNITION KEY SWITCH
Disconnect 2-pin key switch harness connector from ignition switch. Using a DVOM, check for continuity between switch terminals (Yellow/Blue wire and White/Red wire). Continuity should only be present with ignition key inserted in ignition switch. Replace switch if continuity is not as specified.
NO REMOTE CONTROL FUNCTIONS OPERATE
Note. If no problem exists after performing the following tests, replace remote controller. When remote controller is replaced, all remote controllers that are to be used with this system must be reprogrammed at the same time. See PROGRAMMING .
If no remote controller functions operate, perform the following and repair as necessary

- Perform «DOOR SWITCH CIRCUIT CHECK»(ref-4865-S04339881942000072500000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Perform «POWER SUPPLY & GROUND CIRCUIT CHECK»(ref-4865-S31295172592000072500000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
REMOTE CONTROL DOOR LOCK/UNLOCK FUNCTION INOPERATIVE
Note. If no problem exists after performing the following tests, replace remote controller. When remote controller is replaced, all remote controllers that are to be used with this system must be reprogrammed at the same time. See PROGRAMMING .
If doors cannot be locked or unlocked using remote controller, perform the following and repair as necessary
- Perform «REMOTE CONTROLLER BATTERY CHECK»(ref-4865-S14072322972000072500000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Perform «MULTI-REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM ANTENNA CHECK»(ref-4865-S22147341932000072500000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Perform «KEY-IN SWITCH CIRCUIT CHECK»(ref-4865-S34600801862000072500000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Perform «DOOR SWITCH CIRCUIT CHECK»(ref-4865-S04339881942000072500000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Perform «DOOR UNLOCK SENSOR CIRCUIT CHECK»(ref-4865-S07878539172000072500000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Perform «POWER SUPPLY & GROUND CIRCUIT CHECK»(ref-4865-S31295172592000072500000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
INTERIOR LIGHT FUNCTION INOPERATIVE
Note. If no problem exists after performing tests, replace remote controller. When remote controller is replaced, all remote controllers that are to be used with this system must be reprogrammed at the same time. See PROGRAMMING .
Ensure interior light switch is in DOOR position. If dome light illuminates when a door is opened, but not when pressing unlock button on remote controller, perform INTERIOR LIGHT OPERATION CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. If dome light does not illuminate at all, check interior light circuit. See appropriate wiring diagram in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article.
HAZARD WARNING LIGHTS DO NOT ACTIVATE
Note. If no problem exists after performing tests, replace remote controller. When remote controller is replaced, all remote controllers that are to be used with this system must be reprogrammed at the same time. See PROGRAMMING .
Ensure hazard lights flash with hazard switch on. If hazard lights do not function properly, check hazard light circuit. See appropriate wiring diagram in EXTERIOR LIGHTS article. If hazard lights function properly, perform HAZARD WARNING LIGHT REMINDER CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS.
REMOTE CONTROLLER PANIC ALARM FUNCTION INOPERATIVE
- Check if horn sounds and headlights flash when anti-theft warning system is activated. If horn and headlights do not operate when alarm is activated, check anti-theft system. See appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article. If horn and headlights operate properly, go to next step.
- Enter identity code of a different or new remote controller. See «PROGRAMMING»(ref-4865-S37737905622000072500000) . Recheck system operation. If operation is okay, replace multi-remote controller. If same symptom occurs as in step 1) , recheck multi-remote controller operation. Replace smart entrance control unit if necessary.
REMOTE CONTROLLER BATTERY CHECK
Remove battery from inoperative remote controller. Measure voltage between positive and negative battery terminals. If 2.5-3.0 volts does not exist, replace remote controller battery. If 2.5-3.0 volts exists, battery is okay at this time. Check for poor battery connections in remote controller.
MULTI-REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM ANTENNA CHECK
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect antenna feed cable from Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU). Remove left rear pillar garnish and disconnect antenna feed cable from antenna. Check continuity in antenna feed cable between SECU and antenna. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace antenna feed cable.
- Check continuity between ground and both ends for antenna feed cable. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, replace antenna feed cable.
- Visually inspect antenna for damage. If damage does not exist, antenna is okay at this time. If damage exists, replace antenna.
POWER SUPPLY & GROUND CIRCUIT CHECK
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. Measure voltage at terminal No. 1 (White/Red wire) at SECU harness connector. (Scheme 3) If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check for the following and repair as necessary: Faulty fusible link "F" (40-amp) located in power distribution box in engine compartment. Faulty circuit breaker No. 1 located above instrument panel fuse box. Open and/or short in White/Red wire between circuit breaker No. 1 and SECU. Open and/or short in White/Black wire between circuit breaker No. 1 and power distribution box.
- Turn ignition switch to ACC position. Measure voltage at terminal No. 17 (Green/White wire) at SECU harness connector. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check for the following and repair as necessary: Faulty fuse No. 10 (10-amp) in instrument panel fuse box. Open and/or short in Green/White wire between instrument panel fuse box and SECU.
- Check continuity between ground and terminal No. 10 (Black wire) at SECU harness connector. If continuity exists, power supply and ground circuits are okay at this time. If continuity does not exist, repair open in SECU ground circuit. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4865-S06874701872000072500000).

DOOR SWITCH CIRCUIT CHECK
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using a voltmeter, backprobe appropriate terminals at Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector with door in appropriate position. See «DOOR SWITCH INPUT VOLTAGE TEST»(ref-4865-S15486117382000072500000) table. (Scheme 3) If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, door switch input signals are okay at this time.
- Test malfunctioning door switch. See «DOOR SWITCH»(ref-4865-S28749070042000072500000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If door switch is defective, replace door switch. If door switch is okay, check door switch ground circuit and signal circuits for opens and/or shorts and repair as necessary. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4865-S06874701872000072500000).

DOOR SWITCH INPUT VOLTAGE TEST
KEY-IN SWITCH CIRCUIT CHECK
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using a voltmeter, backprobe terminal No. 24 (White/Red wire) at Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. (Scheme 3) When key is in ignition switch, battery voltage should exist. When key is out of ignition switch, zero volts should exist. If voltage is as specified, key-in switch circuit is okay at this time. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove lower steering column cover. Disconnect key-in switch harness connector. Measure resistance between key-in switch terminals (component side). When key is in ignition switch, continuity should exist. When key is out of ignition switch, continuity should not exist. If continuity is not as specified, replace key-in switch. If continuity us as specified, check for the following and repair as necessary: Faulty fuse No. 24 (7.5-amp) in instrument panel fuse box. Open and/or short in Yellow/Blue wire between instrument panel fuse box and key-in switch. Open and/or short in White/Red wire between SECU and key-in switch.
DOOR UNLOCK SENSOR CIRCUIT CHECK
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using a voltmeter, backprobe appropriate terminals at Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector with appropriate door lock in appropriate position. See «DOOR UNLOCK INPUT VOLTAGE TEST»(ref-4865-S04454278902000072500000) table. (Scheme 3) If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, door unlock input signals are okay at this time.
- Disconnect malfunctioning door lock actuator harness connector. Check continuity between terminals No. 2 and 4 (terminals No. 3 and 4 on rear hatch) at door lock actuator connector (component side). (Scheme 4)or (Scheme 5). When door is locked, continuity should not exist. When door is unlocked, continuity should exist. If continuity is not as specified, replace door lock actuator. If continuity is as specified, check door unlock sensor ground and signal circuits for opens and/or shorts and repair as necessary. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4865-S06874701872000072500000).

HAZARD WARNING LIGHT REMINDER CHECK
- Turn hazard lights on using hazard switch. If hazard lights operate, go to next step. If hazard lights do not operate, repair hazard lights as necessary. See appropriate wiring diagram in EXTERIOR LIGHTS article.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) harness connector. Ground terminal No. 7 (Pink wire) at SECU harness connector. (Scheme 3) If hazard lights do not operate, go to next step. If hazard lights operate, replace SECU.
- Test multi-remote relay. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4865-S06874701872000072500000). If relay is okay, go to next step. If relay is defective, replace multi-remote relay.
- Remove multi-remote relay. With voltmeter connected to ground, measure voltage at terminals No. 1, 3 and 6 (all Orange wires) of multi-remote relay harness connector. (Scheme 6) If battery voltage exists at all terminals, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist at any terminal(s), check for the following and repair as necessary: Faulty fuse No. 20 (15-amp) in instrument panel fuse box. Open and/or short in Orange wire between instrument panel fuse box and multi-remote relay.
- Ensure multi-remote relay is still removed. Measure voltage between terminals No. 3 (Orange wire) and No. 5 (Gray/Red wire) at multi-remote relay harness connector. Also, measure voltage between terminals No. 6 (Orange wire) and No. 7 (Gray/Blue wire) at multi-remote relay harness connector. If battery voltage exists, repair open in Pink wire between SECU and multi remote relay. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Gray/Red and/or Gray/Blue wires between multi-remote relay and turn signal lights.
