Removal & Installation (I30)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air duct assembly. Remove starter mounting bolts. Disconnect battery cable from starter. Disconnect starter harness connector. Remove starter. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
Removal (Q45)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Using Puller (HT72720000), separate tie rod ends from steering knuckle. Remove steering gear mounting bolts. Disconnect hydraulic lines.
- Ensure wheels point in straight-ahead position before removing lower joint from steering gear. To prevent damage to air bag spiral cable, DO NOT turn steering wheel. After removing lower joint, place match marks on pinion shaft and pinion housing to indicate neutral position of gear.
- Disconnect starter harness connector. Disconnect battery cable from starter. Remove starter mounting bolts. Remove starter.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . When steering gear is installed, set left and right dust boots to equal deflection (to center steering rack). Attach lower joint by aligning pinion shaft and pinion housing match marks.
