VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT (I30)
- Remove intake manifold collector and ornament covers. Remove valve covers. Remove spark plugs. Place No. 1 cylinder on TDC of compression stroke. To ensure No. 1 cylinder is at TDC, lifters on cylinders No. 1 are loose and No. 4 are tight. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between lifter and camshaft lobes as specified. See VALVE LIFTER CLEARANCE table (I30) and «VALVE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE (I30)»(ref-18052-S21535691092000122900000) table.
- Check clearance for intake lobes of cylinders No. 1 and 6, and exhaust lobes of cylinders No. 2 and 3. Record any valve clearance measurements which are out of specification, to be used later to determine the required replacement shim size.
- Rotate crankshaft (clockwise) 240 degrees and ensure No. 3 piston is at TDC of compression stroke. Check clearance for intake lobes of cylinders No. 2 and 3, and exhaust lobes of cylinders No. 4 and 5. Record any valve clearance measurements which are out of specification, to be used later to determine the required replacement shim size.
- Rotate crankshaft (clockwise) 240 degrees and ensure No. 5 piston at at TDC of compression stroke. Check clearance for intake lobes of cylinders No. 4 and 5, and exhaust lobes of cylinders No. 1 and 6. Record any valve clearance measurements which are out of specification, to be used later to determine the required replacement shim size.
- If clearance of any valve lifter is not within specification, rotate crankshaft so camshaft lobes on valve to be adjusted is facing upward, away from valve lifter. Rotate valve lifter so notch area on valve lifter is facing center of cylinder head. Using Valve Lifter Compressor (KV10115110 ), press valve lifter downward away from camshaft. (Scheme 1)
- Install Valve Lifter Retainer (K10115120 ) between camshaft and valve lifter, as close to camshaft bracket as possible. (Scheme 2) Remove Valve Lifter Compressor (KV10115110 ). Use compressed air, aimed toward lifter, separate adjusting shim from lifter. Using a small screwdriver and magnet, remove adjusting shim. (Scheme 2)
- Using micrometer, measure thickness of adjusting shim removed. Using measured clearance and adjusting shim thickness, determine correct thickness of adjusting shim to be used. Place side stamped with shim thickness facing down and install correct adjusting shim. Using Valve Lifter Compressor (KV10115110 ), press valve lifter downward away from camshaft. Remove Valve Lifter Retainer and then remove Valve Lifter Compressor.
- Ensure valve clearance of adjusted valves is as specified. See «VALVE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE (I30)»(ref-18052-S21535691092000122900000) table. Install valve cover using NEW gasket. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
