Cranking Voltage Normal

  1. Does engine crank normally? If yes, then go to next step. If no, go to step 3 .
  2. Does engine start? If yes, then starter is OK. Inspection end. If no, starter is OK. Perform further diagnosis of engine mechanical or engine control system.
  3. Does starter turn? If yes, then check ring gear and starter drive pinion. Once resolved, perform battery test again. If no, then check "B" terminal circuit see «DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE 1, CHECK "B" TERMINAL CIRCUIT»(ref-167746-S38695662822004102500000) .
  4. Is terminal "B" circuit OK? If yes, go to next step. If no, then repair as needed.
  5. Check "S" terminal circuit, see «DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE 2, CHECK "S" TERMINAL CIRCUIT»(ref-167746-S42206728782004102500000) . Is terminal "S" circuit OK? If yes, then go to next step. If no, then repair as needed.
  6. Does engine turn freely by hand? If yes, then replace starter motor. If no, then perform further diagnosis of engine mechanical or powertrain mechanism. See appropriate article in ENGINES.

Cranking Voltage Low

Compare the engine temperature and the cranking voltage with the specifications. See MINIMUM SPECIFICATION OF CRANKING VOLTAGE REFERENCING COOLANT TEMPERATURE .

  1. Is voltage less than the specified value? If yes, then go to step 3 . If no, go to next step.
  2. Does starter turn smoothly? If yes, starter is OK. Inspection end. If no, then go to next step.
  3. Check "B" terminal circuit, see «DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE 1, CHECK "B" TERMINAL CIRCUIT»(ref-167746-S38695662822004102500000) . Is "B" terminal circuit OK? If yes, go to next step. If no, then repair as needed.
  4. Check "S" terminal circuit, see «DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE 2, CHECK "S" TERMINAL CIRCUIT»(ref-167746-S42206728782004102500000) . Is "S" terminal circuit OK? If yes, then go to next step. If no, then repair as needed.
  5. Does engine turn freely by hand? If yes, then replace starter motor. If no, then perform further diagnosis of engine mechanical or powertrain mechanism. See appropriate article in ENGINES.
