Removal

  1. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-49499-S07664459552001011500000). Remove hood. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system and engine oil. Remove radiator. Remove accessory drive belts, alternator and cooling fan assembly.
  2. Remove power steering pump and A/C compressor with hoses attached and secure aside. Disconnect necessary air intake hoses, vacuum hoses, fuel hoses, coolant hoses, control cables and electrical connections. Raise and support vehicle. Remove lower engine covers.
  3. Remove nut from end of axle shaft at hub. Remove brake caliper and secure aside. Remove brake rotor. Remove nut and separate tie rod from steering knuckle. Remove cap and nut from upper stud on steering knuckle. Separate upper stud on steering knuckle from upper suspension arm.
  4. Cover axle shaft boots with shop towel to prevent damage. Using soft-faced hammer, tap axle shaft from hub assembly. If axle shaft cannot be tapped from hub assembly, use puller to separate axle shaft from hub assembly. Remove axle shaft support bearing bolts.
  5. Using screwdriver, pry right axle shaft from transaxle. (Scheme 4) On M/T models, pry left axle shaft from transaxle. (Scheme 5) On A/T models, use screwdriver and hammer to remove left axle s shaft from transaxle. (Scheme 6) CAUTION: Use care not to damage pinion shaft when removing left axle shaft from transaxle.
  6. On all models, support transaxle with transaxle jack. Support engine with engine hoist. Remove crossmember located below engine. Remove engine and transaxle mount bolts. Lower engine hoist and transaxle jack to lower engine and transaxle from bottom of engine compartment.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure engine mounts are installed so rubber seats are properly positioned and engine mount is centered in mounting bracket. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. Adjust all control cables, linkages and fluid levels.

  1. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-49499-S07664459552001011500000). Drain cooling system. Disconnect necessary air intake hoses, coolant hoses, fuel hoses, vacuum hoses, electrical connections and control cables.
  2. Remove necessary valves, etc. for access intake manifold collector and intake manifold. (Scheme 7) Remove retaining bolts, intake manifold collector and gasket.
  3. Remove retaining bolts, fuel rail along with fuel injectors and insulators. Remove retaining bolts/nuts, intake manifold and gaskets.

To install, reverse removal procedure using NEW gaskets, "O" rings and insulators. Tighten all fasteners in sequence to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. (Scheme 8)
