Starters: Diagnosis Infiniti FX45 I

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. See STARTER - GENERAL TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE 1, CHECK "B" TERMINAL CIRCUIT

1. Remove the fuel pump fuse. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-167750-S14075345232004102500000).
2. Crank or start the engine (if possible) until the fuel pressure is released.
3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
4. Check that the starter motor connector E313 terminal (Black/Red wire on FX35 or Black wire on FX45) connection is clean and tight.
5. Check voltage between starter motor connector E313 terminal "B" (Black/Red wire on FX35 or Black wire on FX45) and ground using a digital circuit tester. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-167750-S22436751752004102000000). (Схема №3) Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as not specified, check harness between the battery and the starter motor for open circuit.
6. Check voltage between starter motor connector E313 terminal "B" (Black/Red wire on FX35 or Black wire on FX45) and battery positive terminal using a digital circuit tester. With ignition switch in "START" position, voltage should be less than 0.5 volt. (Схема №3) If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as not specified, check harness between the battery and the starter motor for continuity.
7. Check voltage between starter motor case and battery negative terminal using a digital circuit tester. With ignition switch in "START" position, voltage should be less than 0.2 volt. (Схема №3) If voltage is as specified, starter motor "B" terminal circuit is OK. Further inspection is necessary. Refer to «WORK FLOW»(ref-167750-S24586759772004102500000). If voltage is as not specified, check the starter motor case and ground for poor continuity.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE 2, CHECK "S" TERMINAL CIRCUIT

1. Remove the fuel pump fuse. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-167750-S14075345232004102500000).
2. Crank or start the engine (if possible) until the fuel pressure is released.
3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
4. Disconnect starter motor "S" terminal connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-167750-S22436751752004102000000).
5. Check voltage between starter motor connector F33 on FX35, or E312 on FX45, terminal "S" (Black wire) and ground using a digital circuit tester. With ignition switch "ON", battery voltage should exist. (Схема №4) If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as not specified, check: 40-amp fusible link (letter "F", located in fuse and fusible link box). Ignition switch. Starter relay (within the IPDM E/R). Harness for open or short.
6. Connect starter motor connector F33 on FX35, or E312 on FX45. Check voltage between starter motor connector F33 or E312 terminal "S" (Black wire) and battery positive terminal using a digital tester. With ignition switch in "START" position, voltage should be less than 1.0 volt. (Схема №4) Starter motor "S" terminal circuit is OK. Further inspection is necessary. Refer to «WORK FLOW»(ref-167750-S24586759772004102500000). If voltage is as not specified, check harness between the battery and the starter motor "S" terminal for poor continuity.

PINION/CLUTCH INSPECTION

1. Inspect pinion gear teeth and ring gear teeth. Replace pinion if teeth are worn or damaged.
2. Inspect reduction gear teeth and armature shaft gear teeth. Replace reduction gear if teeth are damaged or excessively worn.
3. Pinion should rotate smoothly in one direction and lock in opposite direction. Replace pinion if abnormal resistance is felt.
