REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGVehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
  1. Remove center exhaust pipe.
  2. Remove drive shaft. See appropriate DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  3. On models equipped with AWD, remove transfer case. See appropriate TRANSFER CASE article in TRANSAXLES/TRANSMISSIONS.
  4. On all models, remove rear oil seal using flat-bladed screwdriver. Use care to not scratch rear extension assembly on RWD models or adaptor case assembly on AWD models. (Scheme 8)
  5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Use drift to drive rear oil seal into rear extension (on RWD models) or adaptor case (on AWD models) until it is flush. Apply ATF to rear oil seal upon installation. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification.

Removal (RWD)

  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
  2. Drain transmission fluid through drain plug.
  3. Remove front suspension member. See appropriate FRONT SUSPENSION article in SUSPENSION.
  4. Remove front exhaust pipe and center exhaust pipe.
  5. Remove rear drive shaft. See appropriate DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVELINE/DIFFERENTIALS.
  6. Remove oil pan and oil pan gasket.
  7. Check foreign materials in oil pan to help determine causes of malfunction. If transmission fluid is very dark, smells burned, or contains foreign particles, the friction material (clutches, bands) may need replacement. A tacky film that will not wipe clean indicates varnish build up. Varnish can cause valves, servo, and clutches to stick and can inhibit pump pressure.
  8. Support transmission with transmission jack. When setting transmission jack, place wooden blocks to prevent from damaging control valve with TCM and transmission case.
  9. Remove rear engine member.
  10. Remove tightening bolts for rear extension assembly and transmission case. (Scheme 9)
  11. Tap rear extension with soft hammer.
  12. Remove rear extension from transmission case. (With needle bearing.) (Scheme 10)
  13. Disconnect revolution sensor connector. Use care to not damage connector. (Scheme 11)
  14. Straighten terminal clips to free sensor harness.
  15. Remove revolution sensor from transmission case. (Scheme 12)

Installation

CAUTIONAfter completing installation, check for transmission fluid leakage and fluid level. See CHECKING FLUID LEVELS .
  1. Install revolution sensor in transmission case with bolt. (Scheme 12) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166548-S06611335732004092200000).
  2. Connect revolution sensor connector. (Scheme 11)
  3. Securely fasten revolution sensor harness with clips.
  4. Apply recommended sealant to rear extension assembly as shown (Scheme 13) Completely remove all moisture, oil and old sealant from transmission case and rear extension assembly mounting surfaces.
  5. Install rear extension assembly to transmission case. (With needle bearing.)
  6. Tighten rear extension assembly mounting bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166548-S06611335732004092200000). DO NOT reuse self-sealing bolts. (Scheme 9)
  7. Install rear engine member. See appropriate FRONT SUSPENSION article in SUSPENSION.
  8. Install oil pan to transmission case using the following steps: Install oil pan gasket to oil pan. DO NOT reuse oil pan gasket. Install it in the direction to align hole positions. Completely remove all moisture, oil and old gasket from oil pan mounting surface. Install oil pan (with oil pan gasket) to transmission case. Install it so that drain plug comes to the position as shown. Use care to not pinch electrical harnesses. Tighten oil pan mounting bolts to specification in sequence shown after temporarily tightening them. (Scheme 14) DO NOT reuse oil pan mounting bolts. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166548-S06611335732004092200000).
  9. Install drain plug to oil pan. DO NOT reuse drain plug gasket. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166548-S06611335732004092200000).
  10. Install rear drive shaft. See appropriate DIFFERENTIALS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  11. Install front exhaust pipe and center exhaust pipe.
  12. Install front suspension member. See appropriate FRONT SUSPENSION article in SUSPENSION.
  13. Pour new transmission fluid into transmission case. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-166548-S31096157512004092200000).
  14. Connect negative battery terminal.

Scheme 12: Removal
  1. Disconnect lower lever of control device and control rod.
  2. Remove knob cover below selector lever knob downward.
  3. Pull lock pin out of selector lever knob.
  4. Remove selector lever knob.
  5. Remove console finisher. Refer to COMPONENT PARTS DRAWING .
  6. Remove center console. Refer to COMPONENT PARTS DRAWING .
  7. Remove key interlock cable from control device. Refer to «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-171363-S13858771332005020300000) .
  8. Disconnect A/T device harness connector.
  9. Remove control device assembly.

Install in reverse order of removal. Be careful of the following

  1. After installation is completed, adjust and check A/T position.

Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal.

  3. Disconnect heated oxygen sensor No. 2 harness connector.
  4. Drain transmission fluid through drain plug.
  5. Remove oil pan and oil pan gasket.
  6. Check foreign materials in oil pan to help determine cause of malfunction.   9. Remove transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2 with bracket from control valve with TCM. (Scheme 18)
  10. Remove bracket from transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2.

  1. Install transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2 to bracket.
  2. Install transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2 (with bracket) in control valve with TCM. (Scheme 18) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166548-S06611335732004092200000).
  3. Connect transmission fluid sensor No. 2 connector.
  4. Securely fasten transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2 harness with terminal clip. (Scheme 17)
  5. Install oil pan to transmission case using the following steps: Install oil pan gasket to oil pan. DO NOT reuse oil pan gasket. Install it in the direction to align hole positions. Completely remove all moisture, oil and old gasket from oil pan mounting surface. Install oil pan (with oil pan gasket) to transmission case. Install it so that drain plug comes to the position as shown. Use care to not pinch electrical harnesses. Tighten oil pan mounting bolts to specification in sequence shown after temporarily tightening them. (Scheme 14) DO NOT reuse oil pan mounting bolts. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166548-S06611335732004092200000).
  6. Install drain plug to oil pan. DO NOT reuse drain plug gasket.
  7. Connect heated oxygen sensor No. 2 harness connector.
  8. Install front suspension member. See appropriate FRONT SUSPENSION article in SUSPENSION.
  9. Pour transmission fluid into transmission assembly. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-166548-S31096157512004092200000).
  10. Connect negative battery terminal.

Note. Manufacturer refers to valve body assembly as control valve assembly.

  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
  2. Drain transmission fluid through drain plug.
  3. Remove front suspension member. See appropriate FRONT SUSPENSION article in SUSPENSION.
  4. Disconnect heated oxygen sensor No. 2 harness connector.
  5. Disconnect transmission assembly harness connector.
  6. Remove snap ring from transmission assembly harness connector.
  7. Push transmission assembly harness connector. Use care to not damage connector.
  8. Remove oil pan and oil pan gasket.
  9. Check foreign materials in oil pan to help determine cause of malfunction. If transmission fluid id very dark, smells burned, or contains foreign materials, the friction material (clutches, bands) may need replacement.   10. Remove magnets from oil pan.
  11. Disconnect transmission fluid sensor No. 2 connector. Use care to not damage connector. (Scheme 17)
  12. Straighten terminal clips to free cord assembly and transmission temperature sensor No. 2 harness.
  13. Disconnect revolution sensor connector. Use care to not damage connector. (Scheme 19)
  14. Straighten terminal clips to free revolution sensor harness.
  15. Remove bolts "A", "B" and "C" from control valve with TCM. (Scheme 20)
  16. Remove control valve with TCM from transmission case. When removing, be careful with the manual valve notch and manual plate height. Remove it vertically. see scheme 29
  17. Remove transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2 with bracket from control valve with TCM. (Scheme 18)
  18. Remove bracket from transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2.
  19. Remove "O" ring from transmission assembly harness connector.
  20. Disconnect TCM connectors. Use care to not damage connectors.
  21. Remove transmission assembly harness connector from control valve with TCM using flat-bladed screwdriver. see scheme 30
  22. Disconnect TCM connector and PNP switch connector. Use care to not damage connectors. see scheme 31

CAUTIONAfter completing installation, check transmission fluid leakage and fluid level. See CHECKING FLUID LEVELS .
  1. Connect TCM connector and PNP switch connector. see scheme 31
  2. Install transmission assembly harness connector from control valve with TCM.
  3. Connect TCM connectors.
  4. Install "O" ring in transmission assembly harness connector. DO NOT reuse "O" ring. Apply transmission fluid to "O" ring.
  5. Install transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2 to bracket.
  6. Install transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2 (with bracket) in control valve with TCM. Adjust bolt hole of bracket to bolt hole of control valve with TCM. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166548-S06611335732004092200000). (Scheme 18)
  7. Install control valve with TCM in transmission case. Ensure that turbine revolution sensor securely installs in sensor hole. see scheme 32 Hang down sensor harness toward outside so as not to disturb installation of control valve with TCM. Adjust transmission assembly harness connector of control valve with TCM of terminal hole of transmission case. Assemble it so that manual valve cutout is engaged with manual plate projection. see scheme 29

  9. Tighten bolt 1, 2, and 3 temporarily to prevent dislocation. (Scheme 20) After that, tighten in order (1, 2, and 3), and then tighten remaining bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166548-S06611335732004092200000).
  10. Connect transmission fluid sensor No. 2 connector. (Scheme 17)
  11. Securely fasten terminal cord assembly and transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2 harness with terminal clips.
  12. Connect revolution sensor connector. (Scheme 19)
  13. Securely fasten revolution sensor harness with terminal clips.
  14. Install magnets in oil pan.
  15. Install oil pan to transmission case using the following steps: Install oil pan gasket to oil pan. DO NOT reuse oil pan gasket. Install it in the direction to align hole positions. Completely remove all moisture, oil and old gasket from oil pan mounting surface. Install oil pan (with oil pan gasket) to transmission case. Install it so that drain plug comes to the position as shown. Use care to not pinch electrical harnesses. Tighten oil pan mounting bolts to specification in sequence shown after temporarily tightening them. (Scheme 14) DO NOT reuse oil pan mounting bolts.   16. Install drain plug to oil pan. DO NOT reuse drain plug gasket.
  17. Pull up transmission assembly harness connector. Use care to not damage connector.
  18. Install snap ring to transmission assembly harness connector.
  19. Connect transmission assembly harness connector.
  20. Connect heated oxygen sensor No. 2 harness connector.
  21. Install front suspension member. See appropriate FRONT SUSPENSION article in SUSPENSION.
  22. Pour transmission fluid into transmission assembly. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-166548-S31096157512004092200000).
  23. Connect negative battery terminal.
