Replacement And Air Bleeding
| WARNING | Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Serious scalding could be caused by hot fluid under high pressure escaping from the radiator. |
| CAUTION | When pouring engine coolant, be sure to shut the relay box lid and not to let coolant spill on the electrical parts or the paint. If any coolant spills, rinse it off immediately. |
- Make sure the engine and radiator are cool to the touch.
- Remove radiator cap.
- Loosen the drain plug, and drain the coolant
- Tighten the radiator drain plug securely.
- After draining engine coolant in the reservoir tank, clean the tank.
- Fill the radiator with water through the radiator cap and tighten the cap. NOTE: Pressure can blow water back out the radiator cap-pour water slowly while intermittently squeezing the radiator hoses.
- After warming up the engine until the cooling fan operates several times, accelerate it at idle.
- Wait until the engine is cool.
- Repeat the step 1 to 8 until the drained water is clean.
- Fill fluid mixture with coolant and water (5:5) (Tropical region - 4:6) slowly through the radiator cap. Push the upper/lower hoses of the radiator so as bleed air easily. NOTE: Use only genuine antifreeze/coolant. For best corrosion protection, the coolant concentration must be maintained year-round at 35% minimum. Coolant concentrations less than 35% may not provide sufficient protection against corrosion or freezing. Coolant concentrations greater then 60% will impair cooling efficiency and are not recommended. CAUTION: Do not mix different brands of anti-freeze/coolants. Do not use additional rust inhibitors or antirust products; they may not be compatible with the coolant.
- Start the engine and run coolant circulates. When the cooling fan operates and coolant circulates, refill coolant through the radiator cap.
- Repeat step 11 until the cooling fan 3 ~ 5 times and bleed air sufficiently out of the cooling system.
- Install the radiator cap and fill the reservoir tank to the "MAX" line with coolant.
- Run the vehicle under idle until the cooling fan operates 2 ~ 3 times.
- Stop the engine and wait coolant to cool.
- Repeat step 10 to 15 until the coolant level doesn't fall any more, bleed air out of the cooling system NOTE: As it is to bleed air out to the cooling system and refill coolant when coolant gets cool completely, recheck the coolant level in the reservoir tank for 2 ~ 3 days after replacing coolant. Coolant capacity: 6.8L (7.2 US qt, 5.9 Imp qt)

- Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
- Remove the air cleaner assembly. (Refer to «INTAKE AND EXHAUST SYSTEM»(ref-583687) .)
- Remove the under cover (A). Tightening torque: 19.6 ~ 24.5 N.m (2.0 ~ 2.5 kgf.m, 14.5 ~ 18.1 lb-ft)
- Loosen the drain plug (A), and drain the coolant. Remove the radiator cap to speed draining. WARNING: Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Serious scalding could be caused by hot fluid under high pressure escaping from the radiator.
- Remove the radiator upper hose (A) and lower hose (B).
- Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses (A/T only). (Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-583681-S14677983612013102900000) .)
- Disconnect the fan motor connector (A) and then remove the cooling fan assembly. Tightening torque: 8.8 ~ 10.8 N.m (0.9 ~ 1.1 kgf.m, 6.5 ~ 7.9 lb-ft)
- Remove the front bumper. (Refer to «FRONT BUMPER»(ref-583686-S04547168152013102900000) .)
- Disconnect the over flow hose (A) from the radiator.
- Remove the cover (A) and the air guard (B) and then separate the condenser from the radiator.
- Remove the radiator mounting bracket (A) and then pull the radiator upper from vehicle. Tightening torque: 8.8 ~ 10.8 N.m (0.9 ~ 1.1 kgf.m, 6.5 ~ 7.9 lb-ft)
- Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
- Fill the radiator with coolant and check for leaks. NOTE: Bleed air from the cooling system. Start engine and let it run until it warms up. (Until the radiator fan operates 3 or 4 times.) Turn off engine and let it cool down. Check the coolant level and add coolant if needed. This will allow trapped air to be removed from the cooling system. Put the radiator cap on tightly, then run engine again and check for leaks.

Scheme 10: Radiator Cap Testing
- Remove the radiator cap, wet its seal with engine coolant, then install it to pressure tester.
- Apply a pressure of 93 ~ 123 kPa (0.95 ~ 1.25 kgf/cm 2 , 14 ~ 19 psi).
- Check for a drop in pressure.
- If the pressure drops, replace the cap.

Scheme 11: Radiator Leakage Test
- Wait until engine is cool, then carefully remove the radiator cap and fill the radiator with engine coolant, then install a pressure tester on it.
- Apply a pressure of 93 ~ 123 kPa (0.95 ~ 1.25 kgf/cm 2 , 14 ~ 19 psi).
- Inspect for engine coolant leaks and a drop in pressure.
- If the pressure drops, check hoses, the radiator and the water pump for leakage. If there is no leakage, inspect the heater core, the cylinder block and the cylinder head.
- Remove the tester and reinstall the radiator cap. NOTE: Check for engine oil in coolant and/or coolant in engine oil.

- Remove the drive belt (A).
- Remove the exhaust manifold heat protector (A). Tightening torque: 7.8 ~ 11.8 N.m (0.8 ~ 1.2 kgf.m, 5.8 ~ 8.7 lb-ft)
- Remove the water inlet pipe bolt (A), and then remove the water pump (B) and the gasket. Tightening torque: 9.8 ~ 11.8 N.m (1.0 ~ 1.2 kgf.m, 7.2 ~ 8.7 lb-ft) 18.6 ~ 23.5 N.m (1.9 ~ 2.4 kgf.m, 13.7 ~ 17.4 lb-ft)
- Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
- Fill the radiator with coolant and check for leaks. NOTE: Bleed air from the cooling system. Start engine and let it run until it warms up. (Until the radiator fan operates 3 or 4 times.) Turn off engine and let it cool down. Check the coolant level and add coolant if needed. This will allow trapped air to be removed from the cooling system. Put the radiator cap on tightly, then run engine again and check for leaks.
Removal and Installation
Note. Removal of the thermostat would have an adverse effect, causing a lowering of cooling efficiency. Do not remove the thermostat, even if the engine tends to overheat.

- Drain engine coolant so its level is below thermostat.
- Remove the radiator lower hose (A).
- Remove water inlet fitting (A), gasket (B) and thermostat (C). Tightening torque: 7.8 ~ 11.8 N.m (0.8 ~ 1.2 kgf.m, 5.8 ~ 8.7 lb-ft)
- Installation is reverse order of removal. NOTE: Install the thermostat with the jiggle valve upward.
- Fill the engine coolant.
- Start the engine and check for leaks.
- Recheck the coolant level.
Scheme 19
- Immerse the thermostat in water and gradually heat the water.
- Check the valve opening temperature. Valve opening temperature: 82°C (177°F) Full opening temperature: 95°C (205°F) If the valve opening temperature is not as specified, replace the thermostat.
- Check the valve lift. Valve lift: 8 mm (0.3 in.) or more at 95°C (205°F) If the valve lift is not as specified, replace the thermostat.
