Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the starter cable from the "B+" terminal on the solenoid, then disconnect the connector from the "S" terminal. (Scheme 9)
  3. Remove the 2 mounting bolts holding the starter, then remove the starter.
  4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten mounting bolts and solenoid battery terminal nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-169364-S20902726212004120700000).

Removal

  1. Press the stop ring using a socket. (Scheme 10)
  2. After removing the snap ring (using snap-ring pliers), remove the stop ring and the overrunning clutch. (Scheme 10)

Installation

Using a suitable pulling tool, pull the overrunning clutch stop ring over the snap ring. (Scheme 11)

BRUSH & SPRING REPLACEMENT

  1. Brushes that are worn out, or oil-soaked, should be replaced. (Scheme 12)
  2. When replacing field coil brushes, crush worn out brushes with pliers, taking care not to damage the pigtail.
  3. Sand the pigtail end with sandpaper to ensure good soldering.
  4. Insert the pigtail into the hole provided in the new brush and solder it. Make sure that the pigtail and excess solder do not come out onto the brush surface. (Scheme 13)
  5. When replacing the ground brush, slide the brush from the brush holder by prying the retaining spring back.
