Possible Cause

  1. Battery charge low.
  2. Battery cables loose, corroded or worn.
  3. Transaxle range switch faulty (Vehicle with automatic transaxle only).
  4. Fusible link blown.
  5. Starter motor faulty.
  6. Ignition switch faulty.

Possible Correction

  1. Replace battery.
  2. Repair or replace cables.

  4. Replace fusible link.
  5. Replace or repair starter motor.
  6. Replace ignition switch.

BATTERY

CAUTIONBecause of the possibility of personal injury, always use extreme caution and appropriate eye protection when working with batteries.

Note. The following test is performed using the MICRO 570 Analyzer, which provides the ability to test the charging and starting systems, including the battery, starter and generator.

  1. Connect the tester to the battery. Red clamp to battery positive (+) terminal. Black clamp to battery negative (-) terminal. Connect clamps securely. If CHECK CONNECTION message is displayed on the screen, reconnect clamps securely.
  2. The tester will ask if the battery is connected IN A VEHICLE or OUT OF A VEHICLE. Make your selection by pressing the arrow buttons, then press ENTER.
  3. Choose either Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) or Cold Cranking Power (CCP) and press the ENTER button.
  4. Set the CCA value displayed on the screen to the CCA value marked on the battery label by pressing up and down buttons and press ENTER.
  5. The Micro 570 tester displays battery test results including voltage and battery ratings. A relevant action must be taken according to the test results by referring to the battery test results as shown. See «BATTERY TEST RESULTS»(ref-169364-S21029576322004120800000) table.
  6. To conduct starter test, continuously, press ENTER. See «STARTER»(ref-169364-S37226394432004120800000) .

BATTERY TEST RESULTS

CRANKING VOLTAGE & CURRENT DRAW

  1. Cranking voltage should be no less than 8.7 volts on A/T models, and 8.0 volts on M/T models.
  2. Current draw should be no more than 230 amperes on A/T models, and 200 amperes on M/T models.
  3. If cranking voltage is too low, or current draw too high, check for : Dead or low battery. Open circuit in starter armature commutator segments. Starter armature dragging. Shorted armature winding. Excessive drag in engine.
  4. Check Cranking RPM Engine speed during cranking should be above 100 RPM.
  5. If speed is too low, check for: Loose battery or starter terminals. Excessively worn starter brushes. Open circuit in commutator segments. Dirty or damaged helical splines or drive gear. Defective drive gear overrunning clutch.
  6. Check Starter Disengagement With the shift lever in "N" or "P" position (A/T) or with the clutch pedal depressed (M/T), turn the ignition switch to START position, and release to ON position.
  7. The starter drive gear should disengage from the flywheel or flywheel ring gear when key is released.
  8. If the drive gear hangs up on flywheel ring gear, check for: Solenoid plunger and switch malfunction. Dirty drive gear assembly or damaged overrunning clutch.

Using MICRO 570 Analyzer

  1. After the battery test, press ENTER immediately for the starter test.
  2. After pressing ENTER key, start the engine.
  3. Cranking voltage and starter test results will be displayed on the screen. Take relevant action according to the test results by referring to the starter test results. See «STARTER TEST RESULTS»(ref-169364-S03122632252004120800000) table.

STARTER TEST RESULTS

STARTER RELAY

  1. Remove the fuse box cover.
  2. Remove the starter relay. see scheme 1
  3. Inspect the relay continuity. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between terminals No. 2 and 4. (Scheme 16) If there is no continuity, replace the relay. Check that there is no continuity between terminals 1 and 5. If there is continuity, replace the relay.
  4. Inspect the relay operation. Apply battery positive voltage across terminals 2 and 4. (Scheme 16) Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between terminals No. 1 and 5. If there is no continuity, replace the relay.

SOLENOID TESTS

BRUSH HOLDER

Check for continuity between the brush holder plate and the brush holder. (Scheme 17) The normal condition is no continuity.

FRONT & REAR BRACKET BUSHING

Inspect the bushing for wear or burrs. If the bushing is worn or burred, replace the front bracket assembly or the rear bracket assembly.

OVERRUNNING CLUTCH

  1. While holding clutch housing, rotate drive pinion. Drive pinion should rotate smoothly in one direction, but not in the reverse direction. Replace overrunning clutch if operation is not as specified. (Scheme 18)
  2. Visually inspect drive pinion. If drive pinion is worn or burred, replace overrunning clutch. If drive pinion is damaged, also check ring gear for wear or burrs.
