INTRODUCTION

Sensor operating range information can help determine if a sensor is out of calibration. An out-of-calibration sensor may not set a trouble code, but it may cause driveability problems.

Note. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article or SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article for additional sensor testing procedures. Unless stated otherwise in test procedure, perform all tests using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance.

Acceleration/Rough Road Sensor

Start engine and allow to idle. Backprobe acceleration sensor and measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1. See ACCELERATION/ROUGH ROAD SENSOR VOLTAGE table. Replace acceleration sensor if voltage signal is not as specified.

Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor

Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor

CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR SPECIFICATION

Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor

To check sensor resistance, turn ignition off. Carefully remove ECT sensor. With sensing portion of ETC sensor immersed in cool water, check resistance as water is heated. To check sensor voltage, backprobe ECT sensor connector or ECM connector terminals during engine operation. See ETC SENSOR SPECIFICATIONS table.

ETC SENSOR SPECIFICATIONS

Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) Sensor

Start engine and allow to idle at normal operating temperature. Backprobe fuel tank pressure sensor connector terminal. After engine has operated for approximately 20 minutes, measure sensor output voltage between sensor ground and sensor signal terminals. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. See FTP SENSOR OUTPUT VOLTAGE .

FTP SENSOR OUTPUT VOLTAGE

Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S)

Testing requires use of OBD-II compliant scan tool. See related DTC in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.

Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater

Turn ignition off. Disconnect suspect HO2S connector. Measure sensor heater resistance between connector terminals No. 3 and 4. See HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HO2S) HEATER RESISTANCE table.

Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor

Turn ignition on. Backprobe IAT sensor terminals No. 1 and 2. Measure output voltage as temperature changes. See IAT SENSOR TEMPERATURE-TO-VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS table.

Knock Sensor

Before checking knock sensor resistance, ensure sensor is properly mounted. Knock sensor mounting bolt should be tightened to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 N.m).

Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor

Start engine and allow to idle when coolant temperature is 176-203°F (80-95°C). Backprobe connector and measure MAF sensor output voltage between ground and signal circuit. See MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR OUTPUT VOLTAGE table. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR OUTPUT VOLTAGE

Throttle Position (TP) Sensor

  1. Turn ignition on. Backprobe TP sensor connector and measure signal voltage between ground and sensor signal terminal. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.   2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TP sensor connector. Measure TP sensor resistance between sensor ground terminal and sensor power supply. Resistance should change smoothly from idle position to wide open throttle position. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
