- Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery and then wait for at least 30 seconds.
- Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels can face straight ahead.
- Remove the airbag module. (Refer to " «DRIVER AIRBAG (DAB) MODULE AND CLOCK SPRING»(/hyundai/santa-fe/iii-2012-2016/remont/airbag/#airbag-modules-clock-spring) ")
- Disconnect the connector & lock nut (A) and then remove the steering wheel by using special service tools (09561-11001). Tightening torque: 44.1 ~ 49.0N.m (4.5 ~ 5.0 kgf.m, 32.5 ~ 36.2lb-ft) NOTE: Do not hammer on the steering wheel to remove it; it may damage the steering column.
- Installation is the reverse of the removal.

Scheme 4
Scheme 5
Scheme 6
- Loosen the screw and then remove the lower cover (A) from the steering wheel body.
- Disconnect the steering wheel remote switch connector (A).
- Remove the steering wheel remote switch (A) and (B).
- Installation is the reverse of the removal.

Description
The heated steering wheel feature works by using a heated pad that is wrapped around the diameter of the wheel.

- Turn ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
- Remove the crash pad lower panel. (Refer to " «CRASH PAD LOWER PANEL»(/hyundai/santa-fe/iii-2012-2016/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#crash-pad) ")
- Remove the crash pad side switch assembly (A) after loosening the screws.
Scheme 14
- Measure a resistance of NTC (Negative temperature coefficient) and Heated pad. NTC (Negative temperature coefficient) resistance (Black/Yellow, Black) - 10.0 kohms ± 10% (25°C) Heated pad resistance (Yellow, Black) - 1.6 ~ 2.0 ohms ± 10%
- Measure a temperature. The temperature of wheel surface grip must rise from -20°C to 20°C within 6 minute The temperature of wheel surface grip must keep 38°C ± 4°C after 25 minute At that time switch on, all measure point (1~8)
Scheme 15
Flex Steer is system to choose the three modes power steering depending on driver preference or driving conditions.
Information
- Display on the cluster but power steering is would not changed while operating the steering wheel.
As a safety measures, mode is changed automatically when steering wheel operation is done.
- Be sure to carefully change the mode while driving.
- Electronic Power Steering (MDPS) is not working due to the failure, "flex steer" is may not work.
Scheme 16
- First input: Display the current mode for 4 seconds on the cluster.
- Add input: Mode is changed sequentially.
- Three steering modes: COMFORT: For the elder and the female drivers: it is mainly used for city driving and stop & parking, and a little lighter power steering. NORMAL: Basic mode SPORT: It is mainly used for highway driving, and a little heavy power steering.
Scheme 17
Scheme 18
- Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
- Remove the driver airbag module. (Refer to " «DRIVER AIRBAG (DAB) MODULE AND CLOCK SPRING»(/hyundai/santa-fe/iii-2012-2016/remont/airbag/#airbag-modules-clock-spring) ")
- Remove the steering wheel. (Refer to «Removal»(/hyundai/santa-fe/iii-2012-2016/remont/steering-column/#steering-wheel) .
- Disengage the steering wheel remote control switch assembly. (Refer to " «AUDIO REMOTE CONTROL»(/hyundai/santa-fe/iii-2012-2016/remont/entertainment-systems/#audio-system) ")
- Remove the remote control switch (A) and (B).
- Install in the reverse order of removal.
