Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFLS)

AFLS (Adaptive Front-lighting System) is a headlamp orientation control system that takes into account both steering angle and vehicle speed to orient the headlamps to an angle that provides better nighttime visibility.

Variable conditions make beam pattern of running vehicle kaleidoscope.

Component of AFLS

  1. Input part : It is provided that information of speed sensor, height sensor and so on related to condition of vehicle.
  2. Control part (AFLS Unit) : It controls Output part by analyzing/judging Input signal.
  3. Output part : it drive Low beam of H/Lamp to upper/lower and left/right side optimum beam pattern according to output control signal of AFLS Unit.

AFLS Setting Procedure

When it replace AFLS ECU, H/Lamp Unit, Height sensor, it operates in setting procedure by using Diagnostic equipment following below.

Parameter is composed of three state (Air-suspension, Steel-suspension, Delivery state)

When AFLS setting procedure operate, necessarily confirm suspension type and then download parameter.

Vehicle condition while AFLS setting

  1. Vehicle on an even surface
  2. No vehicle movement
  3. Gear position in P & N
  4. Ignition switched on & Engine RPM >500RPM
  5. Diagnostic equipment connected
  6. ALL ECUs on CAN mounted and activated
  7. Battery voltage > 10.5 V (ECU supply to be ensured)
  8. Light switched
  9. AFLS on (Don't push AFLS OFF switch)

Action in case of download wrong parameter

  1. In case Steel suspension vehicle downloaded Air-suspension parameter --> B1638 (Air-Sus. CAN Signal Timeout) occurred
  2. In case Air-suspension car downloaded Steel suspension parameter --> B1907 (FRT Sensor signal Fault), B1909 (Rear Sensor signal Fault) occurred
  3. Solution Download Delivery Parameter check up B1661 (Parameter missing) Ignition OFF Ignition ON & Engine RPM > 500RPM Download matching Parameter (Steel & Air suspension) In case download steel suspension parameter, Calibration have to operate up to setting procedure

Verification of Vehicle Repair

After a repair, it is essential to verifying that the fault has been corrected.

  1. Connect scan tool and select "Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)" mode.
  2. Using scantool, Clear DTC.
  3. Operate the vehicle within DTC Enable conditions in General information.
  4. Are any DTCs present? YES Go to the applicable troubleshooting procedure. NO System is performing to specification at this time.

Check Open signal circuit

  2. Disconnect AFLS OFF S/W connector.
  3. Ignition "ON"
  4. Measure voltage between signal terminal of AFLS OFF S/W harness connector and chassis ground Specification: below 4V
  5. Is "voltage" display near the specified value? YES Go to " «COMPONENT INSPECTION»(ref-345967-S22301472312009102300000) " procedure. NO Check for open/short in harness. Repair as necessary and then go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-345967-S13461723312009102300000) " procedure.

  2. Disconnect Multi-function switch connector and head lamp (low) relay.
  3. Ignition "ON"
  4. Measure voltage between Head lamp switch signal terminal of Multi-function switch harness connector and chassis ground.
  5. Measure voltage between Head lamp switch signal terminal of head lamp (low) relay harness connector and chassis ground. Specification: below 4V
  6. Is "voltage" display near the specified value? YES Go to " «COMPONENT INSPECTION»(ref-345967-S22197858612009102300000) " procedure. NO Check for open/short in harness. Repair as necessary and then go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-345967-S17819303122009102300000) " procedure.

Head lamp (LOW) Relay Check

  1. Ignition "OFF"
  2. Disconnect Multi-function switch connector.
  3. Ignition "ON"
  4. Measure voltage between Head lamp switch signal terminal of Multi-function switch harness connector and chassis ground. Specification: B+
  5. Is "voltage" display near the specified value? YES Go to " «MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH CHECK»(ref-345967-S18509998662009102300000) " procedure. NO Substitute with a known - good Relay and check for proper operation. If the problem is corrected, replace Relay and go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-345967-S17819303122009102300000) " procedure.

Multi-function switch Check

  1. Ignition "OFF"
  2. Connect Multi-function switch connector.
  3. Ignition "ON"
  4. Measure voltage for headlamp switch, When switch "ON" and "OFF". Specification: switch "ON" approx, 0V, switch "OFF": B+
  5. Is "voltage" display near the specified value? YES Fault is intermittent caused by poor contact in the sensor's and/or ECU'S connector or was repaired and ECU memory was not cleared. Thoroughly check connectors for looseness, poor connection, bending, corrosion, contamination, deterioration, or damage. Repair or replace as necessary and go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-345967-S17819303122009102300000) " procedure NO Substitute with a known - good Multi-function switch and check for proper operation. Check CAN BUS Short to Ground

  1. Ignition "OFF"
  2. Disconnect CAN communication modules. (AFLS ECU, ECM, TCU, VDC ECU, EHPS, ECS, 4WD, steering angle sensor)
  3. Measure the resistance between CAN-HIGH terminal of DLC harness connector and chassis ground
  4. Measure the resistance between CAN-LOW terminal of DLC harness connector and chassis ground Specification: Discontinuity (Infinite ohms)
  5. Is the measured resistance within specification? YES Go to " «CHECK CAN BUS SHORT TO BATTERY»(ref-345967-S23772426662009102300000) ". NO Repair short to ground in circuit and go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-345967-S40320061432009102300000) ".

Check CAN BUS Short to battery

  1. Ignition "OFF"
  2. Disconnect CAN communication modules. (AFLS ECU, ECM, TCU, VDC ECU, EHPS, ECS, 4WD, steering angle sensor).
  3. Ignition "ON"
  4. Measure the voltage between CAN-HIGH terminal of DLC harness connector and chassis ground
  5. Measure the voltage between CAN-LOW terminal of DLC harness connector and chassis ground Specification: below 0V
  6. Is "voltage" display near the specified value? YES Go to " «CHECK CAN BUS OPEN»(ref-345967-S21841153562009102300000) ". NO Repair short to battery and go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-345967-S40320061432009102300000) ".

Check CAN BUS Open

  1. Ignition "OFF
  2. Disconnect CAN communication modules. (AFLS ECU, ECM, TCU, VDC ECU, EHPS, ECS, 4WD, steering angle sensor).
  3. Check continuity between CAN-HIGH terminal of DLC harness connector and CAN HIGH terminal of each module.
  4. Check continuity between CAN-LOW terminal of DLC harness connector and CAN LOW terminal of each module. Specification: Continuity (below 1.00)
  5. Is the measured resistance within specification? YES Go to " «COMPONENT INSPECTION»(ref-345967-S22266646762009102300000) " procedure. NO Repair open in CAN BUS and go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-345967-S40320061432009102300000) ".

  2. Disconnect CAN communication modules. (AFLS ECU, ECM, TCU, VDC ECU, EHPS, ECS, 4WD, steering angle sensor).
  3. Connect 2 channel scope to DLC CAN HIGH terminal and CAN LOW terminal.
  4. IG KEY "ON" after connecting only AFLS ECU to CAN BUS. (IG KEY "ON" after connecting only "the Control Module (s) to be checked" to CAN BUS.) Specification
  5. Does correct waveform generate from each module? YES Replace the module which generates poor communication waveform, and go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-345967-S40320061432009102300000) ". NO Fault is intermittent caused by poor contact in the sensor's and/or ECU'S connector or was repaired and ECU memory was not cleared. Check voltage power circuit

  2. Disconnect front height sensor connector and rear height sensor connector.
  3. Ignition "ON"
  4. Measure the voltage between front height sensor's power circuit of connector side and chassis ground. Measure the voltage between rear height sensor's power circuit of connector side and chassis ground. Specification: below 5V

  2. Disconnect front height sensor connector and rear height sensor connector and AFLS ECU connector.

  4. Measure the voltage between front height sensor's power circuit of connector side and chassis ground. Measure the voltage between rear height sensor's power circuit of connector side and chassis ground. Specification: below 0V
  5. Is "voltage" display near the specified value? YES If the circuit is insulated well and the sensor power supply from ECU is high, replace ECU and go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-345967-S12987545012009102300000) ". NO Repair short to battery and go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-345967-S12987545012009102300000) ".

Check Short to Ground

  1. Ignition "OFF"
  2. Disconnect front height sensor connector and rear height sensor connector and AFLS ECU connector.
  3. Measure the resistance between front height sensor's power circuit of connector side and chassis ground. Measure the resistance between rear height sensor's power circuit of connector side and chassis ground. specification: Discontinuity (Infinite ohms)
  4. Is the measured resistance within specification? YES If the circuit is insulated well and the sensor power supply from ECM is low, replace ECM and go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-345967-S12987545012009102300000) ". NO Repair short to battery and go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-345967-S12987545012009102300000) ".

  1. Connect scan tool to data link connector (DLC).
  2. Engine "ON" and Head lamp "ON"
  3. Monitor the "Sensor angle front, Sensor angle rear" parameters on the scantool Specification: below -128 ~ +125 mm
  4. Is parameter displayed within specifications? YES Fault is intermittent caused by poor contact in the sensor's and/or ECU's connector or was repaired and ECU memory was not cleared. Thoroughly check connectors for looseness, poor connection, bending, corrosion, contamination, deterioration, or damage. Height sensor linkage checking

  1. Check the separation or faulty assemblage of linkage of height sensor with the vehicle lifted.

Check open in ground circuit

AFLS Unit (ECU)

AFLS located in Cockpit Module is provided information of vehicle (steering wheel signal, vehicle speed, inclination of vehicle).

Based on provided information, it calculates algorithm and adjust Low beam of H/Lamp.

It transmits driving information by using LIN protocol, it is operated in Fail-safe reaction mode In case system failure occurred.

Swivelling Actuator

Swivelling actuator inside H/Lamp is provided driving information of left/right side by using LIN protocol from AFLS Unit (ECU).

It drive to control position by using step motor.

In case of system failure, it provides function to back to initial position (center).

Levelling Actuator

Levelling actuator inside H/Lamp is provided driving information of upper/lower by using LIN protocol from AFLS Unit (ECU)

It drive to control position by using step motor.

In case of system failure, it provides function to lower to -2.8% or -1.5% position.
