TRANSMISSION CODES

SERVICE INTERVALS

Change fluid every 30,000 miles.

CHECKING FLUID LEVEL

Vehicle must be level floor and at normal operating temperature. Place gearshift lever in "N". Add enough ATF to bring fluid level to lower mark on dipstick. Level should be between upper and lower marks of "HOT" range. Insert dipstick fully to prevent dirt from entering transaxle.

Use Dexron II ATF.

TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES

DRAINING & REFILLING

  1. Remove drain plug at differential bottom. Loosen oil pan bolts and tap pan at one corner to break it loose, allowing fluid to drain. Remove oil pan.
  2. Clean gasket surfaces of transaxle case and oil pan. Install oil pan with new gasket and tighten oil pan bolts to 8-9 ft. lbs. (10-11 N.m). Install and tighten drain plug with new gasket to 22-25 ft. lbs. (30-34 N.m).
  3. Pour 4.2 qts. (4.0L) of ATF into case through dipstick hole. Unless torque converter was drained, full 6.0 qts. (5.7L) is not necessary. Start engine and allow to idle for at least 2 minutes. With parking brake on, move gearshift lever to each position, ending in Neutral.
  4. Add sufficient ATF to bring fluid level to lower mark. Recheck fluid level after transaxle is at normal operating temperature. Fluid level should be between upper and lower marks of "HOT" range. Insert dipstick fully to prevent dirt from entering transaxle.

NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH

Place manual control lever in "N" position. Turn neutral safety switch body until.472" (12 mm) wide end of manual control lever overlaps switch body flange. (Scheme 1) Tighten 2 attaching bolts to 88-102 INCH lbs. (10-11.5 N.m).

THROTTLE CONTROL CABLE ADJUSTMENT

  1. Ensure throttle lever of carburetor is in curb idle position, with engine at normal operating temperature. Raise cover "B" of throttle cable upward to expose nipple. (Scheme 2) Loosen lower cable bracket mounting bolt.
  2. Move lower cable bracket until distance between nipple and top of cover "A" on throttle cable is.02-.06" (.95-1.05 mm). Tighten lower cable bracket mounting bolt to 106-124 INCH lbs. (12-14 N.m). With throttle lever in wide-open position, pull cable further upward to ensure cable is free.

GEARSHIFT LINKAGE

  1. Place gearshift lever in Neutral. Neutral indicator on console panel should be correctly aligned.
  2. Transaxle should shift into correct gear position as gearshift lever is moved from "P" to "L". If not, gearshift cable may be adjusted at transaxle end of cable.

GEARSHIFT LEVER HANDLE

  1. If shift cable is replaced, or gearshift lever does not properly lock into each position, cable sleeve may be readjusted.
  2. Place gearshift lever in "N". Remove set screw and lift off gearshift lever handle. Turn sleeve so that clearance between gearshift lever end and sleeve is.677-.705" (17.2-17.9 mm). (Scheme 3) Apply wheel bearing grease to push button contact area of sleeve before reassembly.
