Water Pump

SymptomsPossible CausesRemedy
Coolant leakageFrom the bleed hole of the water pumpVisually checkCheck leaks after about ten-minute warming up.If coolant still leaks, replace a water pump.
If leakage stops, reuse the water pump (Do not replace the pump with a new one).
From gaskets or boltsCheck the tightening of the water pump mounting bolts.Retighten the mounting bolts.
Check damage of gaskets or inflow of dust.Replace the gasket and clean dust off.
From outer surface of water pumpCheck the material or any cracks of the water pump.Poor material. If any crack found, replace the water pump.
NoiseFrom bearings From mechanical seals Impeller interferenceInspection with a stethoscopeAfter starting the engine, check noise with a stethoscope. If there is no noise, reuse the water pump (do not replace it).
If there is any noise from the water pump, remove the drive belt and recheck.
Inspection after removing a drive beltAfter removing a water pump and a drive belt, check noise again. If there is noise, reuse the water pump. Check other drive line parts.
If there is no noise, replace the water pump with a new one.
Inspection after removing a water pumpAfter removing a water pump and a drive belt, check noise again. If there is any interference between them, replace the water pump with a new one.
OverheatingDamaged impeller Loosened impellerLoosened impellerCorrosion of the impeller wingCheck engine coolant. Poor coolant quality/Maintenance check
Impeller separation from the shaftReplace the water pump.

  1. Disconnect the negative terminal (A) from the battery.
  2. Remove the engine room cover (A), engine cover (B) and radiator grill upper cover (C).
  3. Loosen the drain plug (A) and drain the engine coolant. Remove the radiator cap (B) to speed draining. WARNING: Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Serious scalding could be caused by hot fluid under high pressure escaping from the radiator.
  4. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Remove the air duct (A). Disconnect the air flow sensor (AFS) connector (C). Disconnect the breather hose (B). Remove the resonator (F), the intake air hose (E) and air cleaner assembly (D).
  5. Disconnect the ETC module connector (A).
  6. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose (A), the purge control solenoid valve (PCSV) hose (B) and the water hoses (C) from the intake manifold module and the throttle body.
  7. Remove the throttle body.
  8. Remove the engine coolant temperature control assembly (A).
  9. Remove the O-ring (A).

  1. Install the O-ring (A).
  2. Install the engine coolant temperature control assembly (A). Tightening torque: 16.7 ~ 19.6N.m (1.7 ~ 2.0kgf.m, 12.3 ~ 14.5lb-ft) NOTE: The protrusion of the gasket must be face the front of the engine.
  3. Install the throttle body. (Refer to «INSTALLATION»(ref-417731-S31092154492011083000000) )
  4. Reconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose (A), the purge control solenoid valve (PCSV) hose (B) and the water hoses (C) to the intake manifold module and the throttle body.
  5. Reconnect the ETC module connector (A).
  6. Install the air cleaner assembly. Install the resonator (F), the intake air hose (E) and air cleaner assembly (D). Reconnect the breather hose (B). Reconnect the air flow sensor (AFS) connector (C). Install the air duct (A). Tightening torque Hose clamp bolt: 2.9 ~ 4.9N.m (0.3 ~ 0.5kgf.m, 2.2 ~ 3.6lb-ft) Air cleaner assembly bolts: 7.8 ~ 9.8N.m (0.8 ~ 1.0kgf.m, 5.8 ~ 7.2lb-ft)
  7. Install the engine room cover (A), the engine cover (B) and the radiator grill upper cover (C).
  8. Connect the battery negative terminal (A). Tightening torque: 4.0~6.0N.m (0.4~0.6kgf.m, 3.0~4.4lb-ft)
  9. Fill the radiator with coolant and check for leaks.
