Accent & Tiburon

Note. When installing and adjusting transaxle range switch, ensure switch "O" ring is not dislodged.

  1. Apply parking brake. Place gear selector in Neutral. Disconnect shift cable from transaxle range switch. Ensure manual control lever is still in Neutral.
  2. Loosen transaxle range switch attaching bolts. Rotate park/neutral position switch until manual control lever and switch flange tab align. (Scheme 15) Tighten park/neutral position switch bolts to 89-106 INCH lbs. (10-12 N.m).
  3. Install shift cable. Ensure starter will only engage when gear selector is in Park or Neutral, and gear selector shifts smoothly through all gears.

Elantra, Santa Fe, Sonata & XG300

  1. Set transaxle selector lever to Neutral. Loosen retaining nut, but do not remove transaxle shift control cable from manual control lever. Ensure manual control lever is still in Neutral.
  2. Loosen, but do not remove transaxle range switch mounting bolts. Turn transaxle range switch until alignment hole in the end of manual control lever is aligned with hole in transaxle range switch body flange. (Scheme 16)
  3. Tighten transaxle range switch body mounting bolts to 89-106 INCH lbs. (10-12 N.m). Ensure switch body position does not change.
  4. Gently pull transaxle shift control cable away from manual control lever. Tighten control lever coupling nut to 115 INCH lbs. (13 N.m). Ensure selector lever is in Neutral. Ensure each range on transaxle operates and functions correctly for each selector lever position.

Accent & Elantra

  1. Check continuity between relay terminals No. 1 and 3, and between terminals No. 2 and 4. (Scheme 17) Continuity should exist between terminals No. 1 and 3. Continuity should not exist between terminals No. 2 and 4. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace starter relay.
  2. Apply battery voltage and ground between terminals No. 1 and 3. Continuity should now exist between terminals No. 2 and 4. If continuity is not as specified, replace starter relay. If continuity is as specified, starter relay is okay at this time.

Santa Fe, Sonata & XG300

  1. Check continuity between relay terminals No. 85 and 86, and between terminals No. 30 and 87. (Scheme 18) Continuity should exist between terminals No. 85 and 86. Continuity should not exist between terminals No. 30 and 87. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace starter relay.
  2. Apply battery voltage and ground between terminals No. 85 and 86. Continuity should now exist between terminals No. 30 and 87. If continuity is not as specified, replace starter relay. If continuity is as specified, starter relay is okay at this time.

Tiburon

  1. Check continuity between relay terminals No. 1 and 2, and between terminals No. 3 and 5. (Scheme 19) Continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 5. Continuity should not exist between terminals No. 1 and 2. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace starter relay.
  2. Apply battery voltage and ground between terminals No. 3 and 5. Continuity should now exist between terminals No. 1 and 2. If continuity is not as specified, replace starter relay. If continuity is as specified, starter relay is okay at this time.

  1. Disconnect park/neutral position switch harness connector. Ensure continuity exists between terminals No. 7 and 8 when shift lever is in Park and Neutral. (Scheme 20)
  2. If continuity does not exist, check park/neutral position switch adjustment. See «PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH»(ref-63382-S35709850252001031500000) under ADJUSTMENTS. If park/neutral position switch adjustment is okay, replace park/neutral switch.

  1. Disconnect transaxle range switch harness connector located on top of transaxle. Ensure continuity exists between switch terminals No. 9 and 10 when shift selector lever is in Park and Neutral. (Scheme 16)
  2. If continuity does not exist, ensure transaxle range switch is adjusted properly. See «PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH»(ref-63382-S35709850252001031500000) under ADJUSTMENTS. If switch adjustment is okay, replace transaxle range switch switch.

SOLENOID TESTS

CAUTIONPerform solenoid tests in less than 10 seconds to prevent solenoid coil damage.

Pull-In Test

Disconnect field coil wire from terminal "M" of solenoid. Connect 12-volt battery between terminals "S" and "M" of solenoid. (Scheme 21) Solenoid plunger should pull in, extending pinion drive. If pinion drive moves outward, pull-in coil is good. If pinion drive does not move outward, replace solenoid.

Hold-In Test

Disconnect field coil wire from terminal "M" of solenoid. Apply battery voltage to terminal "S" of solenoid, and ground starter case. (Scheme 22) Solenoid plunger should pull in. If pinion drive remains out when plunger is pulled in, hold-in circuit is good. If pinion drive moves in or moves back and forth repeatedly, hold-in circuit is open. Replace solenoid.

PINION GAP

CAUTIONPerform pinion gap test in less than 10 seconds to prevent solenoid coil damage.
  1. Disconnect field coil wire from starter terminal "M" of solenoid. Connect remote starter switch between positive battery terminal and terminal "S" of solenoid. (Scheme 23) Connect jumper wire from negative battery terminal to terminal "M" of solenoid.
  2. Activate remote starter switch (maximum 10 seconds), and ensure pinion drive moves out. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between pinion and stopper. Ensure clearance is within specification. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-63382-S30458944152001020200000). Adjust clearance, if necessary, by adding or removing shims between solenoid and front bracket.

BUSHING

Check front and rear bracket bushing. If bushing is worn or burred, replace as necessary. see scheme 15or see scheme 16.

Before removing bushing, measure and record pressed-in position (depth) of bushing. Remove bushing using a puller. Install NEW bushing to pressed-in position recorded.

OVERRUNNING CLUTCH

  1. While holding clutch housing, rotate drive pinion. Drive pinion should rotate smoothly in one direction, but not in the reverse direction. Replace overrunning clutch if operation is not as specified.
  2. Visually inspect drive pinion. If drive pinion is worn or burred, replace overrunning clutch. If drive pinion is damaged, also check ring gear for wear or burrs.
