AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS

SERVICE INTERVALS

Check fluid at every engine oil change. Under normal conditions, replace fluid and oil screen every 30,000 miles. Under severe conditions, change oil and screen at 15,000 mile intervals.

CHECKING FLUID LEVEL

Vehicle must be level, with engine at normal operating temperature. Ensure gearshift lever is in "P" position. Add enough ATF to bring fluid level to lower mark on dipstick. With engine idling (in "P" position) fluid level should be full, between upper and middle marks of dipstick (HOT range). (Scheme 1) Insert dipstick fully into tube to prevent dirt from entering transaxle.

Manufacturer recommends Mopar ATF PLUS Type 7176.

TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES

DRAINING & REFILLING

  1. Remove drain plug from transaxle oil pan. Drain fluid. Remove oil pan bolts and tap pan to break it loose. Remove oil pan. Clean or replace oil filter/screen. Tighten filter bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. Clean gasket surfaces of transaxle case and oil pan. Install oil pan with NEW gasket and tighten oil pan bolts to specification. Using a NEW gasket, install and tighten drain plug to specification.
  3. Pour 4.2 qts. (4.0L) of ATF into case through dipstick hole. Unless torque converter was drained, dry fill amount is not necessary. Start engine and allow to idle for at least 2 minutes. With parking brake on, move gearshift lever slowly to each position and back to Park. Recheck fluid level on dipstick.
  4. Add sufficient ATF to bring fluid level to lower mark. Recheck fluid level after transaxle is at normal operating temperature. Fluid level should be between marks of dipstick HOT range. (Scheme 1) Insert dipstick fully into tube to prevent dirt from entering transaxle.

GEARSHIFT LEVER SLEEVE

  1. If control cable has been replaced, or gearshift lever does not properly lock into each position, cable sleeve must be readjusted. 2) Set parking brake. Place gearshift lever Neutral. Remove set screws and lift off gearshift lever handle. Turn sleeve so that clearance between gearshift lever end and sleeve is.598-.625" (15.2-15.9 mm). (Scheme 2)
  2. Apply grease to push button contact area and to slope of sleeve before reassembly. Ensure angled side faces push button side of handle when reassembled.

Scheme 3: KICKDOWN SERVO
  1. Clean dirt and other contaminants from servo switch and cover. Remove snap ring. Remove kickdown servo switch. Prevent servo piston from turning by using Holder (09454-33101A). (Scheme 3) Loosen adjusting screw lock nut.
  2. Using Socket (09454-33101B) and INCH-lb. torque wrench, tighten adjustment screw 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m). Loosen adjustment screw and tighten screw 2 turns. Tighten adjustment screw to 44 INCH lbs. (5 N.m). Finally, loosen adjustment screw 2-2 1/4 turns.
  3. Hold adjustment screw at that setting, and tighten lock nut 18-24 ft. lbs. (25-32 N.m). Install "O" ring in groove and lightly lubricate with ATF. Install servo cover to case and install snap ring. Install kickdown switch to cover.

NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH & CONTROL CABLE

  1. Place gearshift lever in Neutral. Loosen control cable adjusting nuts at transaxle control lever, to allow slack in control cable. Loosen neutral safety switch bolts, and turn switch until.47" (12 mm) wide end of control lever aligns with.47" (12 mm) flange on switch body or until.20" (5 mm) diameter hole in lever and switch line up. (Scheme 4)
  2. Tighten neutral safety switch bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. Ensure transaxle control lever and gearshift lever handle are in both in Neutral positions. Adjust cable adjusting nuts to remove slack in control cable. Ensure gearshift lever operates smoothly. Drive vehicle to ensure transaxle shifts into each position selected.
