- On Elantra, remove transaxle top mounting bracket. (Scheme 72) Ensure transaxle is in Neutral.
- Support engine from top, or by suitable jack from bottom, using care not to damage engine oil pan. Remove centermember support under engine. (Scheme 73) Remove lower bellhousing cover to access torque converter bolts.
- Index mark torque converter to flywheel/drive plate and remove special torque converter bolts. Push torque converter away from engine into transaxle. Reinstall centermember support under engine, but only snug tighten bolts.
- Remove undercover panel(s). Remove both axle shaft assemblies. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES. Support transaxle with appropriate type jack. Remove lower transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. Remove transaxle from vehicle.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Before installing transaxle to engine, be sure to install torque converter into transaxle first, aligning torque converter to transaxle pump drive.
- Install transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts in correct locations. (Scheme 71) Tighten to proper specification. Refer to the «TRANSAXLE MOUNTING BOLT TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/hyundai/elantra/i-1990-1995/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-at) table.
- Tighten all mounting bolts to specification. Refer to the «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/hyundai/elantra/i-1990-1995/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-at) table at the end of this article. Refill transaxle fluid to correct level on dipstick. Adjust control cable. Check neutral safety switch adjustment. Refer to ADJUSTMENTS information in SERVICING article. Recheck fluid level after engine is brought to operating temperature before driving vehicle.
