Service Programming System (SPS)

For step by step programming instructions, please refer to the Techline Information System (TIS) terminal.

Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.

IMPORTANTDO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors Corporation service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customers concern. It is essential that the Tech 2 and the TIS terminal are both equipped with the latest software before performing service programming system (SPS). Due to the time requirements of programming a controller, it is recommended that an external power source be used to maintain system voltage. Stable battery voltage is critical during programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. To ensure trouble-free programming, GM recommends using one of the following external power sources: Midtronic PCS charger A fully charged 12V jumper or booster pack disconnected from the AC voltage supply Some modules will require additional programming/setup events performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO.

Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module

  1. FlexFuel (E85) Vehicles The fuel composition learn function is inactive. Programming with the fuel composition learn active will result in fuel trim DTCs. If necessary, drive the vehicle until the scan tool indicates that the fuel composition learn is inactive.
  2. Vehicle system voltage There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be fully charged before programming the control module. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicles battery, such as the following components: Twilight sentinel Interior lights Daytime running lights (DRL) - Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans, radio, etc.
  3. The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2 prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
  4. Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits
  5. DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
  6. DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace the control module.

There is no setup procedure that needs to be performed for the amplifier on this vehicle.

Programming the BCM

IMPORTANTAfter the procedure is completed, the personalization settings of the BCM are set to a default setting. Inform the customer that the personalization must be set again.

Perform BCM special function "Request BCM Info. for SPS", then follow the instructions on the screen. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) for more information.

Learning the Restraints ID

Perform BCM special function "Setup SDM Serial Number in BCM", then follow the instructions on the screen.

Programming Theft Deterrent System Components

Perform BCM special function "Request VTD Info. for SPS", then follow the instructions on the screen. Refer to Programming Theft Deterrent System Components .

Program Key Fobs

Refer to Transmitter Programming for the proper procedure.

Program Tire Pressure (TPM) System

Refer to Tire Pressure Monitor System Configuration for the proper procedure.

IMPORTANTAfter programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis
  1. Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
  2. Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
  3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  4. Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
  5. Clear all history DTCs.

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the communication interface module.

Antilock Brake Control Module

This device requires no programming or setup.

The garage door opener (GDO) programming and setup procedures must be performed after replacement. Refer to Garage Door Opener Programming - Universal (One LED) or Garage Door Opener Programming - Universal (Three LEDs) on how to program the GDO.

The generator battery control module must be setup using the service programming system (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Passenger Presence System (PPS) Rezeroing Procedure

Important

  1. Before rezeroing the passenger presence system (PPS), the front passenger seat must be completely empty of all items. The presence of any items on the front passenger seat will affect the calibration and operation of the PPS.
  2. When rezeroing the PPS, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and dash lights will begin dimming on and off. This is normal operation during the rezeroing procedure and does not indicate additional system faults.
  1. Empty the front outboard passenger seat.
  2. Verify that all supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) and PPS components, connectors and connector position assurances (CPAs) are properly connected and mounted.
  3. Install a scan tool.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. Use the scan tool in order to clear the SIR and PPS DTCs.
  6. With a scan tool, request the PPS rezeroing procedure.
  7. Initiate the PPS rezeroing procedure. The PPS will illuminate both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators located on the instrument panel until the rezeroing procedure has been completed. When the rezeroing procedure has been successfully completed, the PPS will display the current system status at the instrument panel indicator. If the rezeroing procedure was unsuccessful both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators, located on the instrument panel, will alternate from no illumination to full illumination in 1 second intervals, for 5 seconds. The PPS will treat an unsuccessful rezero attempt as a system fault.
  8. If the rezeroing procedure was unsuccessful, repeat this procedure. Due to the communication status between the SDM and the PPS module, this procedure may have to be repeated until a successful rezero attempt has been achieved.
  9. After the PPS has been successfully rezeroed, perform the «Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle»(ref-266892-S29697290792007100900000) .

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.

PCM Reprogramming

IMPORTANTEnsure that the CKP variation learn procedure is performed after reprogramming.
  1. If the powertrain control module (PCM) requires programming, the following procedures must be performed: The PCM reprogramming - Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-266896-S26346876312007100900000) . The CKP variation learn - Refer to «Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn»(ref-266905-S06955353642007100900000) .
  2. Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
  3. Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
