SERVICE PRECAUTIONS

Observe following precautions when working with air bag systems

  1. Disable SRS before servicing any SRS or steering column component. Failure to disable system could result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-123417-S25525926742001092500000) .
  2. Wait about 3 minutes after disconnecting negative battery cable before servicing SRS.
  3. DO NOT use air bag parts from another vehicle. Replace air bag parts with new parts.
  4. If air bag module is dropped, or if there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace part.
  5. DO NOT expose air bag module to temperatures greater than 212°F (100°C).
  6. Information labels are attached to air bag components. Follow all notices on labels.
  7. After work on SRS is completed, check SRS or AIR BAG indicator light to ensure system is functioning properly. See AIR BAG SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
  8. Always wear safety glasses when servicing or handling an air bag.
  9. DO NOT check air bag module continuity at any time.
  10. When placing a live air bag on a bench or other surface, always face air bag and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if it is accidentally deployed.
  11. When carrying a live air bag module, point trim cover away from your body to minimize injury in case of accidental deployment.
  12. If SRS is not fully functional for any reason, vehicle should not be driven until system is repaired and again becomes operational. DO NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors or other components or in any way disable system from operating normally. If SRS is not functional, park vehicle until it is repaired and functions properly.

Note. Some models are equipped with stereo theft protection system. Obtain 5-digit security code from vehicle owner before disconnecting battery cable.

DISABLING DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG

Disconnect negative and then positive battery cables. Wait a minimum of 3 minutes. Remove maintenance lid from bottom rear of steering wheel. (Scheme 5) Disconnect driver's 2P connector and cable reel 2P connector.

ACTIVATING DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG

  1. To activate SRS, connect driver's 2P connector to cable reel 2P connector.
  2. Install maintenance lid on back of steering wheel. Reconnect battery cables. Check AIR BAG indicator light to ensure system is functioning properly. See AIR BAG SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.
