INTRODUCTION

Removal, overhaul and installation procedures (when given by manufacturer) are covered in this article. If component removal and installation is primarily an unbolt and bolt on procedure, a simple tightening specification may be all that is furnished.

DISTRIBUTOR R & I

Disconnect the 2, 4, 6 or 8-pin connector from distributor. Disconnect spark plug wires and coil wire from distributor cap. Remove distributor hold-down bolts. Remove distributor from cylinder head. To install, coat new "O" ring with engine oil and put into place. To finish installation, reverse removal procedure. Set timing to specifications.

Note. The lugs on distributor shaft and mating grooves in camshaft end are offset to eliminate possibility of installing distributor 180 degrees out of time.

Note. Manufacturer's overhaul instructions are not available. (Scheme 1)- (Scheme 5).

IGNITION COIL R & I

On Accord, Civic and CRX, ensure ignition switch is in off position. Remove distributor cap, cap seal and leak cover. Remove 2 screws to disconnect Black/Yellow and White/Blue wires from coil primary terminals. Remove the 4 screws (2 screws on Accord) and slide ignition coil out of distributor housing.

Note. Prelude ignition coil is externally mounted in engine compartment. Removal and installation instructions are not necessary.

FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE

CAUTIONWhen servicing fuel system related components, high fuel pressure may be present in fuel lines and component parts. Relieve pressure before attempting to open system for component replacement. DO NOT allow fuel to flow onto engine or electrical parts or allow an open flame in area while testing fuel system components.

To relieve fuel pressure, remove fuel filler cap. Disconnect negative battery cable. Hold banjo bolt with proper wrench and slowly loosen service bolt on top of fuel filter. Place a shop towel on top of service bolt. Loosen service bolt one complete turn. Always install new washer between service and banjo bolts, when loosened.

KEIHIN 1-BARREL CARBURETOR R & I

Mark and disconnect vacuum hoses and electrical connectors from carburetor assembly. Remove air cleaner case, screens and air cleaner base. Unbolt and remove carburetor assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure. (Scheme 6)

Note. Clean carburetor exterior before disassembly. DO NOT immerse synthetic parts, electrical components or diaphragm assemblies in carburetor cleaner.

Disassembly & Cleaning

Clean cast parts in carburetor cleaner. Clean jets, fuel passages and vacuum ports with compressed air. Do not use wire or drills. Clean remaining parts with solvent and a soft brush. (Scheme 8)

Reassembly

To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Ensure jets are installed in proper location.

Note. Adjust choke linkage before installing carburetor.

Choke Linkage Adjustments

  1. Disconnect No. 18 vacuum hose from choke opener. Leave hose and choke opener exposed to atmosphere. (Scheme 7) Disconnect No. 26 vacuum hose and connect vacuum pump to hose. Apply at least 8 in. Hg and hold. If vacuum drops below 8 in. Hg, apply additional vacuum. Repeat this procedure until sufficient vacuum has been applied for diaphragm to maintain vacuum level and not leak down.
  2. Adjustment procedures are divided into 2 stages. To perform first stage adjustment, turn choke drive gear clockwise and measure clearance between choke valve and casting. Clearance should be.071-.078" (1.80-1.98 mm). To adjust clearance, bend tab "A". Refer to Fig. (Scheme 7).
  3. To perform second stage adjustment, plug end of No. 18 vacuum hose and reapply vacuum to hose 26. Turn choke drive lever clockwise until tab "B" seats against stopper and measure clearance between choke valve and casting. Clearance should be.166-.173" (4.22-4.40 mm) for manual transmission and.183-.190" (4.65- 4.83 mm) for automatic transmission. (Scheme 7) To adjust clearance, bend tab "B". If clearance cannot be adjusted, replace left carburetor.

Float Level Adjustments

Remove float chambers. Hold float chamber surface 30 degrees inclined from vertical. Using Float Level Gauge (07401-0010000 ), measure float level with float tip lightly contacting float valve. Float level must be .59-.67" (15.0-17.0 mm). Adjust as necessary.

FUEL PUMP R & I

WARNINGKeep open flames away from work area.

On all models except Prelude, remove fuel tank. On Prelude, remove left maintenance access cover in luggage compartment. On all models, disconnect fuel lines and connector. Remove fuel pump mounting bolts. Remove fuel pump from fuel tank. To install, reverse removal procedure.

FUEL INJECTORS & FUEL RAIL R & I

  1. Relieve fuel pressure. See «FUEL SYSTEM»(/honda/prelude/iii-1989-1992/remont/removal-installation/#engine-controls-removeinstalloverhaul) in this article. Disconnect electrical connectors from injectors. Disconnect vacuum hose and fuel return from pressure regulator. Place a shop towel over hoses before disconnecting them.
  2. On Prelude, remove EACV from intake manifold. On all models, loosen the retainer nuts on fuel rail and harness holder. Disconnect fuel rail. Remove injectors from intake manifold. To install, put new "O" rings on injectors and coat them with engine oil. Assemble injectors on fuel rail first then install assembly into intake manifold. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

Exhaust Gas Oxygen (O2) Sensor

O2 sensor is mounted in the exhaust pipe just below the exhaust header. It is equipped with a permanent pigtail which must be protected from damage when the sensor is removed. Ensure sensor is free of contaminants, avoid using cleaning solvents of any type. Sensor may be difficult to remove when engine temperature is less than 120°F (49°C). Always use anti-seize compound on threads prior to installation. Tighten sensor to 33 ft. lbs. (45 N.m).

THROTTLE BODY

Note. Torque throttle body mount nuts to 16 ft. lbs (22 N.m).
