CHARGING CIRCUIT
If the charging system indicator does not illuminate or does not go off, or the battery is dead or low, test the following items in the order below.
- Battery
- Charging System Indicator
- Alternator/Regulator Circuit
- Alternator Control System
BRUSHES
Measure the length of both brushes with vernier calipers. (Scheme 46) If either is shorter than the service limit, replace the brush holder assembly. If the brush length is OK, go to ROTOR SLIP RING.
Scheme 46
RECTIFIER
Check for continuity in each direction, between the B terminal "A" and P terminal "B", and between the E terminal "C" and P terminals of each diode pair. (Scheme 47) All diodes should have continuity in only one direction. Because the rectifier diodes are designed to allow current to pass in only one direction, and the rectifier is made up of 8 diodes (4 pairs) (6 diodes (3 pairs) for 2000-03 models), you must test each diode in both directions for continuity with an ohmmeter that has diode checking capability: a total of 16 checks (12 checks for 2000-03 models). If any diode is faulty, replace the rectifier assembly (diodes are not available separately). If all the diodes are OK, go to BRUSH inspection.
Scheme 47
ROTOR SLIP RING
- Check that there is continuity between the slip rings. (Scheme 48)(1999-2001 models) or (Scheme 49) (2002-04 models). If there is continuity, go to next step. If there is no continuity, replace the alternator (1999-2001 models) or replace the rotor assembly (2002-04 models).
- Check that there is no continuity between each slip ring and the rotor and the rotor shaft. If there is no continuity, go to «STATOR»(ref-153574-S23430109402003041400000) (1999-2001 models) or replace the rear housing assembly, and go to next step (2002-04 models). If there is continuity, replace the alternator (1999-2001 models) or replace the rotor assembly (2002-04 models).
- Reassemble the alternator in the reverse order of disassembly. Be careful not to get any grease or oil on the slip rings during reassembly. If you remove the pulley, tighten it's locknut to the specification when you reinstall it. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-153574-S24543844192003041400000) (2002-04 models).

STATOR
- Check that there is continuity between each pair of leads. If there is continuity, go to next step. If there is no continuity, replace the alternator.
- Check for no continuity between each lead and the coil core. If there is no continuity, go to next step. If there is continuity, replace the alternator.
- Reassemble the alternator in the reverse order of disassembly. Be careful not to get any grease or oil on the slip rings during reassembly.
