Removal
- Disconnect battery cables. Remove battery and battery tray. Mark hood-to-hinge brackets for installation reference and remove hood. Remove splash guard. Lift and support vehicle. Drain engine oil, transaxle fluid and coolant. Remove air cleaner housing. Disconnect air intake duct.
- Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-48874-S19058215542001011500000). Disconnect fuel inlet and return hoses. Disconnect throttle cable and clutch cable (if equipped). Label and remove all necessary electrical wires, vacuum lines, and control cables.
- Disconnect wiring harness at emission control box and position control box next to engine. Disconnect coil wire, spark plug wires and distributor cap. Reference mark and remove distributor. 4) Remove drive belts. Remove power steering pump with hoses attached and lay aside. Remove transmission fluid cooler lines (if equipped). Remove speedometer cable from transaxle. CAUTION: DO NOT remove speedometer cable holder. Speedometer gear may fall into transaxle if cable holder is removed.
- On A/C-equipped models, remove A/C compressor without disconnecting lines and lay aside. Remove alternator. Remove radiator and heater hoses. On manual transaxle models, disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. On automatic transaxle models, remove exhaust header pipe, torque converter cover, shift cable and bracket.
- On all models except Civic Wagon 4WD, disconnect shift lever torque rod from clutch housing. Slide shift rod pin retainer backward. Drive out roll pin with a punch and disconnect shift rod.
- On Civic Wagon 4WD, remove cotter pins, washers and disconnect 4WD control cables. (Scheme 4) Remove rear transmission mount bracket. Remove rear drive shaft.
- On all models, remove drive axles. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS article. Attach chain to engine brackets and remove slack from slack from chain. Remove bolts from front and rear engine mounts and discard. NOTE: Front and rear engine mount-to-bracket through bolts are non-reusable.
- Remove side engine mount bracket bolts. Remove transaxle mounting bolts. Remove engine and transaxle from vehicle.

Installation
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten engine/transaxle mounts to specification in proper sequence. (Scheme 5) Improperly tightening engine mounts will cause engine vibration and premature mount wear.
- Use new spring clips when installing drive axles. Install drive axles until spring clip clicks in groove of differential side gear. Ensure all wires and hoses are connected properly. Ensure proper cable mounting.
- When installing speedometer cable, align tab on cable with slot of cable holder. Install clip with bent leg on grooved side. Pull lightly on cable to ensure cable is properly seated.
- Adjust throttle cable tension. On manual transaxle models, adjust clutch pedal free play. See CLUTCH PEDAL ADJUSTMENT in CLUTCHES article. Ensure transaxle shifts smoothly. On automatic transaxle models, ensure gear position agrees with shift indicator.
- On all models, adjust drive belt tension. Fill fluids to proper level. Start engine. Open heater valve and loosen thermostat housing bleed bolt to bleed air from cooling system.
Scheme 5
- Disconnect battery cables. Raise and support vehicle. Drain cooling system. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-48874-S19058215542001011500000) . Disconnect fuel inlet and return hoses. Disconnect charcoal canister vacuum hose at throttle valve.
- Label and disconnect all necessary electrical wires, vacuum lines and control cables from engine. Remove radiator, by-pass and heater hoses.
- Disconnect connectors and remove emission control box with hoses attached and set aside. Remove intake manifold brackets. Remove intake manifold bolts, manifold and gasket.
Clean gasket surfaces. Install intake manifold using new gasket. Using a crisscross pattern, start with inner nuts and tighten in 3 steps to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
Remove exhaust manifold shroud. Disconnect exhaust down pipe from exhaust manifold. Remove oxygen sensor. Remove exhaust manifold bracket. Remove exhaust manifold retaining nuts and manifold. Remove gasket.
Clean gasket surfaces. Install exhaust manifold using new gasket. Using a crisscross pattern, start with inner nuts and tighten in 3 steps to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
