- Vehicle Lift Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
- Front Wheel Remove both front wheels.
- Steering Joint Cover Remove the steering joint cover (A).
- Steering Column Lower Slide Shaft - Hold Set the steering column to the center tilt position, and to the center telescopic position. Hold the lower slide shaft (A) on the column with a piece of wire (B) between the joint yoke (C) of the lower slide shaft and the joint yoke (D) of the upper shaft to prevent the lower slider shaft from pulling out.
- Steering Wheel Hold Center the steering wheel spoke angle. Install a commercially available steering wheel holder tool (A).
- Steering Joint Bolt - Loosen Loosen the steering joint bolt (A).
- Steering Joint - Disconnection Remove the steering joint bolt (A). Disconnect the steering joint (B) from the pinion shaft. NOTE: If the center guide (C) is in place and has not moved, leave it in place. If the center guide has come off, discard it.
- Ball Joint - Removal NOTE: Always use a ball joint remover to disconnect a ball joint. Do not strike the housing or any other part of the ball joint connection to disconnect it. Install a hex nut (A) or the ball joint thread protector. NOTE: When using a hex nut, make sure the nut is flush with the ball joint pin end to prevent damage to the threaded end of the ball joint pin. Apply grease to the ball joint remover on the areas shown (A). Install the ball joint remover as shown. NOTE: Fasten the safety chain (A) securely to a suspension arm or the subframe (B). Making sure not to damage the ball joint boot. Tighten the pressure bolt until the ball joint pin pops loose from the ball joint connecting hole. NOTE: Do not use pneumatic or electric tools on the pressure bolt. Remove the ball joint remover. Remove the hex nut or the ball joint thread protector. Pull the ball joint out of the ball joint connecting hole.
- Tie-Rod End Ball Joint - Disconnection, Both Side Remove the cotter pin (A) from the tie-rod end ball joint. Remove the nut (B). Disconnect the tie-rod end ball joint. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the remover.
- Engine Undercover Remove the engine undercover (A).
- Splash Shield Remove the splash shield (A).
- Power Steering Gearbox Peripheral Assembly Disconnect the connector. Remove the ground terminal (A). Remove the steering gearbox mounting bolts (A). Remove the stiffener mounting bolts (B). Remove the steering gearbox stiffeners (C). Driver's side Passenger's side
- EPS Motor Move the steering gearbox aside. Disconnect the connectors. Remove the EPS motor (A) and the O-ring (B).
Installation

- EPS Motor Apply steering grease to the new O-ring (A). Apply steering grease into the EPS motor shaft (B). Install the O-ring to the EPS motor (C). Install the EPS motor. Connect the connectors. Set the steering gearbox is in position.
- Power Steering Gearbox Peripheral Assembly Loosely tighten the steering gearbox mounting bolt (A) and stiffener mounting bolt (B). Loosely tighten the steering gearbox mounting bolt (A) and stiffener mounting bolt (B). Tighten the steering gearbox mounting bolts and stiffener mounting bolts to the specified torque in the sequence shown. Connect the connector. Install the ground terminal (A).
- Splash Shield Install the splash shield (A).
- Engine Undercover Install the engine undercover (A).
- Tie-Rod End Ball Joint - Connection, Both Side Wipe off any grease contamination from the ball joint tapered section and threads. Connect the tie-rod ball joint (A) to the knuckle. Install the nut (B). Install a new cotter pin (C). NOTE: Bend the cotter pin as shown.
- Steering Column Lower Slide Shaft - Release Cut the wire (A).
- Steering Wheel Release Remove the steering wheel holder tool (A).
- Steering Joint - Reconnection Set the rack in the straight ahead driving position. Slip the lower end of the steering joint (A) onto the pinion shaft (B). NOTE: Pinion shaft with center guide: Install the steering joint by aligning the center guide (C). Pinion shaft without center guide: Position the steering column by aligning the gap (D) within the angle. Align the bolt hole (A) on the steering joint with the groove (B) around the pinion shaft. Loosely install the steering joint bolt (C). Be sure that the joint bolt is securely in the groove in the pinion shaft. Pull on the steering joint to make sure that the steering joint is fully seated.
- Steering Joint Bolt - Tighten Tighten the steering joint bolt (A) to the specified torque.
- Steering Joint Cover Install the steering joint cover (A) in the sequence shown.
- Front Wheel Install both front wheels. NOTE: Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surfaces between the brake disc and the inside of the wheel.
- Steering Gearbox - After Install Symptom Check With the tires raised off the ground, check for the following symptoms by turning the steering wheel fully to the right and left several times. Symptom Probable cause Rubbing sound coming from the lower steering column area. Steering column joint is contacting the cover. Grating sound from the lower steering column area, or a rough feeling during steering. Poor engagement of the pinion shaft serrations. Noise from around the steering wheel during steering. Poor engagement of the SRS cable reel with the steering wheel, or a damaged cable reel.
- Steering After Install - Check After installation, check these items: Start the engine, allow it to idle, and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times. Check that the EPS indicator does not come on. Check the steering wheel spoke angle. If steering spoke angles to the right and left are not equal (steering wheel and rack are not centered), correct the engagement of the joint/pinion shaft splines.
- Pre-Alignment Checks For proper inspection and adjustment of the wheel alignment, do these checks: Release the parking brake to avoid an incorrect measurement. Make sure the suspension is not modified. Make sure the fuel tank is full, and that the tire repair kit, the spare tire, the jack, and the tools are in place on the vehicle. Check the tire size and tire pressure according to tire information.
- Caster - Inspection Use commercially available computerized four wheel alignment equipment to measure wheel alignment (caster, camber, toe, and turning angle). Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions. Check the caster angle. USA and Canada models Caster angle: Except Si: 5 ° 19 '±30 ' Si (Without 18 inch wheel): 5 ° 22 '±30 ' Si (With 18 inch wheel): 5 ° 15 '±30 ' Mexico models Caster angle: Without 18 inch wheel: 5 ° 10 '±30 ' With 18 inch wheel: 5 ° 6 '±30 ' If the measurement is within specifications, measure the front camber angle. If the measurement is not within specifications, check for bent or damaged suspension components.
- Camber - Inspection Use commercially available computerized four wheel alignment equipment to measure wheel alignment (caster, camber, toe, and turning angle). Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions. Check the camber angle. USA and Canada models Camber angle: Except Si: Front: 0 ° 00 '±30 ' Rear: -0 ° 45 '±45 ' Si (Without 18 inch wheel): Front: -0 ° 04 '±30 ' Rear: -0 ° 52 '±45 ' Si (With 18 inch wheel): Front: -0 ° 18 '±30 ' Rear: -0 ° 45 '±45 ' (Maximum difference between the front right and left side: 0 ° 45 ') Mexico models Camber angle: Front: 0 ° 20 '±30 ' Rear: -0 ° 22 '±45 ' (Maximum difference between the front right and left side: 0 ° 45 ') If the measurement is within specification, measure the toe-in. If the measurement for the front camber is not within the specification, go to front camber adjustment. If the measurement for the rear camber is not within the specification, check for bent or damaged suspension components.
- Front Toe - Inspection Use commercially available computerized four wheel alignment equipment to measure wheel alignment (caster, camber, toe, and turning angle). Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions. Set the steering column to the middle tilt position and telescopic positions. Center the steering wheel spokes, and install a steering wheel holder tool. Check the toe with the wheels pointed straight ahead. Front toe-in: 0±2 mm (0±0.08 in) If adjustment is required, go to the front toe adjustment. If no adjustment is required, remove the alignment equipment.
- Turning Angle - Inspection Use commercially available computerized four wheel alignment equipment to measure wheel alignment (caster, camber, toe, and turning angle). Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions. Except '12 models Turn the wheel right and left while applying the brake, and measure the turning angle of both wheels. USA and Canada models Turning angle: Except Si: Inward: 38 ° 30 '±2 ° Outward (reference): 30 ° 47 '±1 ° Si (Without 18 inch wheel): Inward: 38 ° 22 '±2 ° Outward (reference): 30 ° 41 '±1 ° Si (With 18 inch wheel): Inward: 36 ° 33 '±2 ° Outward (reference): 29 ° 53 '±1 ° Mexico models Turning angle: Without 18 inch wheel: Inward: 39 ° 12 '±2 ° Outward (reference): 31 ° 14 '±1 ° With 18 inch wheel: Inward: 36 ° 58 '±2 ° Outward (reference): 30 ° 16 '±1 ° If the measurement is not within the specifications, even up both sides of the tie-rod threaded section length while adjusting the front toe. If it is correct, but the turning angle is not within the specifications, check for bent or damaged suspension components. '12 models Turn the wheel right and left while applying the brake, and measure the turning angle of both wheels. USA and Canada models Turning angle: Except Si: Inward: 38 ° 43 '±2 ° Outward (reference): 30 ° 55 '±1 ° Si: Inward: 38 ° 36 '±2 ° Outward (reference): 30 ° 49 '±1 ° Mexico models Turning angle: Inward: 39 ° 15 '±2 ° Outward (reference): 31 ° 21 '±1 ° If the measurement is not within the specifications, even up both sides of the tie-rod threaded section length while adjusting the front toe. If it is correct, but the turning angle is not within the specifications, check for bent or damaged suspension components.
- HDS DLC - Connection Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.
- EPS Torque Sensor Neutral Position - Memorizing NOTE: The torque sensor neutral position must be memorized whenever the steering gearbox, the EPS motor, or the EPS control unit is replaced. Note that the torque sensor neutral position is not affected when erasing the DTC. The torque sensor is temperature sensitive. When memorizing the torque sensor neutral position, the ambient temperature must be above 68 °F (20 °C). Select EPS ADJUSTMENT, then select TORQUE SENSOR LEARN with HDS, and follow the screen prompts. NOTE: See the HDS Help menu for specific instructions.
- VSA Sensor Neutral Position - Memorization Park the vehicle on a flat and level surface, with the steering wheel in the straight ahead position. Select VSA ADJUSTMENT, then select ALL SENSORS with the HDS, and follow the screen prompts. NOTE: See the HDS Help menu for specific instructions.
- Steering Angle Sensor Neutral Position - Clear Select EPS ADJUSTMENT, then select EPS STEERING ANGLE SENSOR VALUE CLEAR and follow the screen prompts on the HDS. NOTE: See the HDS Help menu for specific instructions.

- Gauge control module (tach) check: 1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). 2. Check the EPS indicator. Does the EPS indicator come on? YES: Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. NO: «Gauges Self-Diagnostic Function»(ref-614110-S34947628712014050700000) .

- Problem verification: 1. Start the engine. 2. Check the EPS indicator. Does the EPS indicator come on, then go off? YES: Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. NO: Go to step 2.
- Gauge control module (tach) operation check: 1. «DO THE GAUGE CONTROL MODULE SELF-DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION»(ref-614110-S34947628712014050700000) . Does the EPS indicator blink? YES: Go to step 3. - Body electrical system DTC check: 1. Check for DTCs in the body electrical system with the HDS. Is DTC indicated? YES: Go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting. NO: Go to step 4.
- EPS system check 1: 1. Check that the HDS communicates with the EPS system. Does the HDS communicate with the EPS control unit? YES: Go to step 10 . NO: Go to step 5.
- Fuse check 1: 1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). 2. Check the following fuse. Fuse No. A1-1 (70 A) Location Under-hood fuse/relay box Is the fuse OK? YES: The fuse is OK. Reinstall the fuse, then go to step 6. NO: Replace the fuse. If the fuse blows again, repair the short to ground on the No. A1-1 (70 A) fuse circuit.
- Fuse check 2: 1. Check the following fuse. Fuse No. B24 (7.5 A) Location Under-dash fuse/relay box Is the fuse OK? YES: The fuse is OK. Reinstall the fuse, then go to step 7. NO: Replace the fuse. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then turn it to ON (II) again. If the fuse blows again, repair the short to ground on the No. B24 (7.5 A) fuse circuit.
- Open wire check (+B_EPS line): 1. Disconnect the following connector. EPS control unit connector A (11P) 2. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2. Test condition IG LOCK (0) EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected Test circuit +B_EPS Test point 1 EPS control unit connector A (11P) No. (WHT) Test point 2 Body ground Is there battery voltage? YES: The +B_EPS wire is OK. Go to step 8. NO: Repair an open in the wire between the EPS control unit and under-hood fuse/relay box.
- Open wire check (IG1_VSA/ABS line): 1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). 2. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2. Test condition IG ON (II) EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected Test circuit IG1_VSA/ABS Test point 1 EPS control unit connector A (11P) No. (GRY) Test point 2 Body ground Is there battery voltage? YES: The IG1_VSA/ABS wire is OK. Go to step 9. NO: Repair an open in the wire between the EPS control unit and under-dash fuse/relay box.
- Open wire check (GND line): 1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2. Test condition IG LOCK (0) EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected Test circuit GND Test point 1 EPS control unit connector A (11P) No. (BLK) Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity? YES: The GND wire is OK. Go to step 14 . NO: Repair an open in the wire between the EPS control unit and body ground (G403).
- EPS system check 2: 1. Start the engine. 2. Check the ENGINE SPEED in the EPS DATA LIST with the HDS. Does the DATA LIST reading match the tach indicated reading? YES: Go to step 14 . NO: Go to step 11.
- EPS system check 3: 1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). 2. Disconnect the following connector. EPS control unit connector A (11P) 3. Start the engine. 4. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2. Test condition IG ON (II), engine running EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected Test circuit NEP Test point 1 EPS control unit connector A (11P) No. (BLU) Test point 2 Body ground Is there 2.7 V or more? YES: The NEP wire is OK. Go to step 14 . NO: Go to step 12.
- Shorted wire check (NEP line): 1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). 2. Short the SCS line with the HDS. 3. Disconnect the following connector. ECM/PCM connector A (49P) 4. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2. Test condition IG LOCK (0) - EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected - ECM/PCM connector A (49P): disconnected Test circuit NEP Test point 1 EPS control unit connector A (11P) No. (BLU) Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity? YES: Repair a short to body ground in the wire between the EPS control unit and the ECM/PCM. NO: The NEP wire is OK. Go to step 13.
- Open wire check (NEP line): 1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2. Test condition IG LOCK (0) - EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected - ECM/PCM connector A (49P): disconnected Test circuit NEP Test point 1 EPS control unit connector A (11P) No. (BLU) Test point 2 ECM/PCM connector A (49P) No. 2 (BLU) Is there continuity? YES: The NEP wire is OK. Go to step 14. NO: Repair an open in the wire between the EPS control unit and the ECM/PCM.
- EPS control unit check (update): 1. Reconnect the following connectors. EPS control unit connector A (11P) ECM/PCM connector A (49P) 2. Update the EPS control unit See «EPS CONTROL UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-614139-S25577756252014050700000) or «EPS CONTROL UNIT UPDATE»(ref-614139-S31189937192014050700000) if it does not have the latest software. 3. Start the engine. 4. Check the EPS indicator. Does the EPS indicator come on, then go off? YES: Troubleshooting is complete. NO: Replace the EPS control unit See «EPS CONTROL UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-614139-S25577756252014050700000) or «EPS CONTROL UNIT UPDATE»(ref-614139-S31189937192014050700000) .

- Motion Adaptive EPS system check: 1. Turn off the Motion Adaptive EPS System operation with HDS. 2. Test drive the vehicle. Is there steering pull? YES: Go to step 2. NO: «DO THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR NEUTRAL POSITION CLEAR»(ref-614102-S01482900712014050700000) .
- EPS system check: 1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). 2. Remove the following fuse. Fuse No. A1-1 (70 A) Location Under-hood fuse/relay box 3. Test drive the vehicle. Is there steering pull? YES: Make sure the suspension is not modified, and «ADJUST THE WHEEL ALIGNMENT»(ref-614141-S09390035972014050700000) . Also check the tire pressure, tire size, and for abnormal tread wear. NO: Do the torque sensor neutral position memorization, then retest. If it is NG, «REPLACE THE STEERING GEARBOX»(ref-614102-S34459989282014050700000) .
