How to Check for DTCs with the SCS Mode (retrieving the flash codes)
Note. The preferred method is to use the HDS to retrieve the DTCs.
When the PCM senses an abnormality in the input or output system, the D indicator (A) in the gauge control module (tach) (B) will usually blink.

When the D indicator has been reported on, connect the HDS to the DLC (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), select SCS mode, then the D indicator will indicate (blink) the DTC.

If the D indicator and the MIL come on at the same time, or if a driveability problem is suspected, follow this procedure

- Connect the HDS to the DLC. (See the HDS user's manual for specific instructions.)
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). Make sure the HDS communicates with the PCM. If it does not, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting See DLC CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING (EXCEPT K24Z7) or DLC CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING (K24Z7) .
- Select SCS mode, then observe the D indicator in the gauge control module. Codes 1 through 9 are indicated by individual short blinks. Code 10 and above are indicated by a series of long and short blinks. One long blink equals 10 short blinks. Add the long and short blinks together to determine the code.
- Record all fuel and emissions DTCs and A/T DTCs.
- If there is a fuel and emissions DTC, first check the fuel and emissions system as indicated by the DTC.
- Clear the DTC and the data.
- If the freeze data is available, drive the vehicle for several minutes with periods of wide open throttle, steady cruise, and stop and go, and then recheck for DTCs. If the A/T DTC returns, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting. If the DTC does not return, there was an intermittent problem within the circuit. Make sure all pins and terminals in the circuit are tight.

Note. Check for DTCs. If any DTCs are stored, troubleshoot and clear them first. Do not allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the port while installing the A/T oil pressure gauge. Be sure to check the ATF level after each pressure port test. When installing or removing the A/T oil pressure gauge, ATF may run out of the pressure inspection ports. Disable the VSA by pressing the VSA OFF button. VSA DTC(s) may come on during the test-drive. If the VSA DTC(s) come on, clear the DTC(s) after testing is done with the HDS.

- HDS DLC - Connection Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.
- A/T Line Pressure - Test Line Pressure Test Connect the A/T oil pressure gauge to the line pressure inspection port (A). Start the engine, and warm it up to normal operating temperature (the radiator fan comes on). Run the vehicle in 2nd gear, and measure the low line pressure from the A/T oil pressure gauge while holding the engine speed at 2, 000 rpm. Bring the engine back to an idle, then apply the brake to stop the wheels from rotating. Measure the normal line pressure while holding the engine speed at 2, 000 rpm with the shift lever in P or N. NOTE: When measuring the normal line pressure, do not measure with the shift lever in other than P or N. - Raise The Vehicle On The Lift Raise the vehicle on the lift.
- Engine Undercover Install the engine undercover (A).

- Warm Up The Engine Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3, 000 rpm without load (A/T in P or N, M/T in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.

- Automatic Transmission Road - Test Park the vehicle on the level ground. Apply the parking brake, and block all four wheels. Start the engine. Shift to D while pressing the brake pedal. Press the accelerator pedal, and release it suddenly. The engine should not stall. Repeat step 4 in all shift lever positions. Prepare the HDS and the MVCI to take a SNAPSHOT (refer to the HDS user's guide for more details if needed): Find a suitable level road. When you are ready to do the test, press OK on the HDS. Accelerate quickly until APP Sensor A reads 1.3 V. Maintain a steady throttle until the transmission shifts to 5th gear, then slow the vehicle and come to a stop. Save the snapshot if the entire event was recorded or increase the recording time setting as necessary, and repeat step 9 . Adjust the parameter setting to 2.4 V. Test-drive the vehicle again. Accelerate quickly until APP Sensor A reads 2.5 V. Maintain a steady throttle until the transmission shifts to 5th gear (or a reasonable speed), then slow the vehicle and come to a stop. Save the snapshot if the entire event was recorded or increase the recording time setting as necessary, and repeat step 12 . Accelerate quickly until the accelerator pedal is to the floor. Maintain a steady pedal until the transmission shifts to 3rd gear, then slow to a stop, and save the snapshot. Review each snapshot individually, and compare the Shift Control, APP Sensor A (V), and the Vehicle Speed to the following table. - Warm Up The Engine Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3, 000 rpm without load (A/T in P or N, M/T in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
- ATF Level Check Park the vehicle on the level ground. Remove the ATF dipstick (yellow loop) (A), and wipe it with a clean cloth. Insert the dipstick into the dipstick hole. Remove the dipstick, and check the ATF level. It should be between the upper mark (A) and the lower mark (B). If the ATF level is below the lower mark, check for fluid leaks at the transmission, the hoses, and the line joints. If a problem is found, fix it before filling the transmission with ATF. NOTE: If the vehicle is driven when the ATF level is below the lower mark, one or more of these symptoms may occur: Transmission damage. Vehicle does not move in any gear. Vehicle accelerates poorly, and flares when starting off in forward and reverse positions. Engine vibrates at idle. If the ATF level is above the upper mark, drain the ATF to proper level. NOTE: If the vehicle is driven when the ATF level is above the upper mark, the vehicle may creep forward while in N, or have shifting problems. If necessary, fill the transmission with ATF through the dipstick hole (A) to bring the fluid level between the upper mark and the lower mark of the dipstick. Do not fill the fluid above the upper mark. Always use Honda automatic transmission fluid (ATF) ATF DW-1. Using a non-Honda ATF can affect shift quality. Insert the dipstick back into the dipstick hole.
- HDS DLC - Connection Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.
- Automatic Transmission Stall Speed - Test Make sure the A/C switch is OFF. Shift to D while pressing the brake pedal firmly, then press the accelerator pedal for 6 to 8 seconds, and note the engine speed. NOTE: Do not move the shift lever or remove your foot off the brake pedal, while raising the engine speed. Allow 2 minutes for cooling, then repeat the test in the all shift lever positions. NOTE: Do not test stall speed for more than 10 seconds at a time. Record the engine speed at 6 to 8 seconds after pressing the accelerator pedal. Higher engine speed will be indicated for 5 seconds. Stall speed tests should be used for diagnostic purposes only. The stall speed should be the same in the all shift lever positions. Do not test stall speed with A/T pressure gauges installed. - Vehicle Lift Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
- Engine Undercover Remove the engine undercover (A).

- ATF Temperature Sensor - Test Disconnect the connector (A). Measure the resistance between shift solenoid wire harness 7P connector (B) terminals No. 5 and No. 6 for ATF temperature sensor. Standard: 50 ohms-25 kohms If the resistance is out of the standard, replace the ATF temperature sensor and the solenoid wire harness. NOTE: The ATF temperature sensor is not available separately from the shift solenoid wire harness. If the resistance is within the standard, the test is complete. Check the connector for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary, then connect the connector securely.
