CHARGE WARNING LIGHT CHECK
Note. If any fuse is blown, CHARGE warning light will illuminate even if charging system is working properly.
Civic, CR-V & Prelude
- Perform «PRELIMINARY INSPECTION»(ref-4208-S03606717032000061500000) . Turn ignition on. If CHARGE warning light illuminates, go to next step. If CHARGE warning light does not illuminate, check for blown CHARGE warning light bulb or blown CHARGE warning light circuit fuse. See «CHARGE WARNING LIGHT CIRCUIT FUSES & FUSE LOCATIONS»(ref-4208-S19110885432000063000000) table. If problem exists, replace bulb or fuse as necessary. If problem does not exist, repair open White/Blue wire or Black/Yellow wire between generator harness connector and underdash fuse/relay block. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4208-S05759943442000061500000) .
- Start engine. If CHARGE warning light turns off, CHARGE warning light circuit is okay. Perform generator/regulator test. See «GENERATOR/REGULATOR TEST»(ref-4208-S41223766242000061500000) . If CHARGE warning light does not turn off, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between ground and generator 4-pin harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Yellow wire). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open Black/Yellow wire between generator harness connector and underdash fuse/relay block.
- Connect a jumper wire between ground and generator harness connector terminal No. 3 (White/Blue wire). If CHARGE warning light illuminates, go to next step. If CHARGE warning light does not illuminate, turn ignition off. Repair open White/Blue wire between generator harness connector and CHARGE warning light.
- Remove jumper wire. If CHARGE warning light turns off, CHARGE warning light circuit is okay. Perform «GENERATOR/REGULATOR TEST»(ref-4208-S41223766242000061500000) . If CHARGE warning light does not turn off, turn ignition off. Repair short to ground in White/Blue wire between generator harness connector and CHARGE warning light.

CHARGE WARNING LIGHT CIRCUIT FUSES & FUSE LOCATIONS
Civic (Except 1.6L SOHC VTEC-E With M/T) & CR-V
| CAUTION | If vehicle has immobilizer system, when substituting a known-good ECM, immobilizer code must be rewritten using Honda PGM tester, or engine will not start. |
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator 4-pin harness connector. Start engine and turn headlights on (high beam). Check voltage between battery positive terminal and generator harness connector terminal No. 2 (White/Green wire). (Scheme 6) If voltage reading is more than one volt, go to next step. If voltage reading is one volt or less, go to step 3.
- Turn ignition and headlights off. Disconnect ECM/PCM 31-pin harness connector. Check continuity between chassis ground and ECM/PCM 31-pin harness connector terminal No. 2 (White/Green wire). (Scheme 7) If continuity exists, repair short to ground in White/Green wire between generator and ECM/PCM harness connector. If continuity does not exist, substitute a known-good ECM/PCM and recheck system operation. If specified voltage is now available, replace original ECM/PCM.
- Turn ignition and headlights off. Disconnect ECM/PCM 31-pin connector. Check continuity of White/Green wire between ECM harness connector terminal No. 2 and generator 4-pin connector terminal No. 2. (Scheme 6)and (Scheme 7). If continuity does not exist, repair open in White/Green wire between generator and ECM/PCM. If continuity exists, test generator/regulator. Civic (1.6L SOHC VTEC-E With M/T) & Prelude

- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 4-pin generator harness connector. Start engine and turn headlights on (high beam). If continuity does not exist, repair open White/Green wire between generator and ECM/PCM.
- Turn ignition and headlights off. Disconnect ECM/PCM 32-pin harness connector. Check continuity between chassis ground and ECM/PCM 32-pin harness connector terminal No. 19 (White/Green wire). If continuity exists, repair short to ground in White/Green wire between ECM/PCM and generator harness connectors.
- If continuity does not exist, substitute a known-good ECM/PCM. Recheck system operation. If specified voltage is now available, replace original ECM/PCM.

BRUSHES
Remove brush holder from generator. Using vernier caliper, measure brush length. (Scheme 9)and (Scheme 10). If brush length is not as specified, replace brushes. See BRUSH LENGTH SPECIFICATIONS table.

Civic
- Remove diode (rectifier) assembly from generator. Check continuity of each diode in both directions by reversing test probes between diode terminals. (Scheme 11) To test all 9 diodes, perform continuity checks between terminal "B" and each "P" terminal, terminal B 1 and each "P" terminal, and terminal "E" and each "P" terminal.
- All diodes should show continuity in one direction and no continuity in the opposite direction. If any diode does not test as specified, replace diode (rectifier) assembly.

Except Civic
- Remove diode (rectifier) assembly from generator. Check for continuity in both directions by reversing test probes between terminal "B" and terminals P 1, P 2, P 3 and P 4. Check for continuity in both directions between diode terminal "E" (ground) and terminals P 1, P 2, P 3 and P 4. (Scheme 12)
- All diodes should show continuity in one direction and no continuity in opposite direction. If any diode does not test as specified, replace entire diode (rectifier) assembly.

ROTOR
Using an ohmmeter, ensure continuity (1.8-3.0 ohms on Civic and CR-V) exists between rotor slip rings. (Scheme 13) If continuity does not exist, replace generator. Ensure continuity does not exist between slip rings and rotor, or between slip rings and rotor shaft. If continuity exists, replace generator.

STATOR
Ensure continuity exists between each pair of leads on stator winding. (Scheme 14) If continuity does not exist, replace generator. Ensure continuity does not exist between any stator winding lead and coil core. If continuity exists, replace generator.

Note. On some models, it may be necessary to remove generator from below vehicle. Before disconnecting battery, obtain radio anti-theft code and record frequencies for radio preset buttons.

- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Disconnect 4P (or 3P) connector. (Scheme 15) Remove terminal nut and White or Black wire from "B" terminal.
- Remove generator adjusting bolt and through-bolt nut (if equipped). Remove generator belt.
- Remove generator through-bolt (if equipped). Remove generator. If necessary, remove mount bracket bolts, then remove upper and lower mount brackets.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Adjust generator belt to specification. See «GENERATOR BELT ADJUSTMENT»(ref-4208-S05062162522003012700000) under ADJUSTMENTS. Enter radio anti-theft code, then enter radio presets.
