FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE
| WARNING | ALWAYS relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact engine or electrical components. |
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove fuel tank filler cap. Place a wrench on and a rag over fuel pulsation damper on fuel rail. Loosen fuel pulsation damper one complete turn. After all repairs are made, replace all washers and tighten fuel pulsation damper to 16 ft. lbs. (21.7 N.m).
COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING
| CAUTION | DO NOT allow coolant to spill on electrical parts or vehicle paint. If coolant spills, rinse with water immediately. |
Set heater controls to maximum heat. Loosen air bleed bolt in the thermostat housing. Fill cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water to bottom of filler neck. Tighten air bleed bolt as soon as colant runs out in a steady stream. With radiator cap off, start and operate engine to normal operating temperature (fan comes on at least twice). Add coolant as necessary. Install radiator cap.
Note. Match mark all wiring and hose connections for reassembly reference.
CYLINDER HEAD

Note. Identify and tag all components (which are being reused) as each is removed to ensure reinstallation to original location.
Remove cylinder head. See CYLINDER HEAD under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove rocker arms. Remove camshaft thrust plate and remove camshaft from cylinder head.
Valve Stem Oil Seals
Intake and exhaust valve seals are not interchangeable. Intake valve seals use a White spring and exhaust valve seals use a Black spring. Using a valve guide seal remover, remove valve seals.
Valve Guide Reaming
- It is only necessary to ream new valve guides. Coat both valve guide reamer and valve guide with cutting oil. Rotate Valve Guide Reamer (07HAH-PJ7010B) clockwise the full length of valve guide bore. Continue to rotate reamer while removing from valve guide bore.
- Measure valve stem oil clearance. See «CYLINDER HEAD»(ref-8308-S25805931512000082200000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Ensure valve slides in valve guide without exerting pressure. Thoroughly wash cylinder head in detergent and water to remove any cutting residue. Coat valve stems with oil and ensure valves move up and down smoothly.
Note. If valve guides are worn, replace them before cutting valve seats. Always reface valve seat after replacing valve guide.
Valve Seat
- Renew valve seats using a valve seat cutter. Carefully cut a 45-degree seat, removing only enough material to ensure a smooth and concentric seat. Bevel upper edge of seat with a 30-degree cutter and lower edge of seat with 60-degree cutter. Check width of seat and adjust accordingly.
- Make one more very light pass with 45-degree cutter to remove any possible burrs caused by other cutters. See «VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS»(ref-8308-S24051731222000082200000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS for valve seat width standards. Inspect for even valve seating. Apply Prussian Blue compound to valve face, insert valve in head and snap valve closed against seat several times. Actual valve seating surface, as shown by Blue compound, should be centered on seat.
Valve Seat Correction Angles
- If seating surface is closer to valve stem (too high), make a second cut with 60-degree cutter to move seat down (away from valve stem) and one more cut with 45-degree cutter to restore seat width.
- If seating surface is closer to valve edge (too low), make a second cut with 30-degree cutter to move seat up (toward valve stem) and one more cut with 45-degree cutter to restore seat width. Final cut (a very light pass) should always be made with 45-degree cutter to remove any possible burrs caused by other cutters.
Valve Stem Installed Height
Insert valve into head and measure valve stem installed height. (Scheme 9) If valve stem installed height is more than service limit, replace valve and recheck. If installed height is still more than service limit (valve seat in head is too deep), replace cylinder head. See VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

On-Vehicle Manual Inspection (VTEC Rocker Arm Test)
- On 1999 models, Remove throttle body cover, ignition wire cover and intake manifold covers. On 2000 models, Remove throttle body cover intake manifold cover and intake manifold cover stay. On all model years, Remove EVAP control canister hose from throttle body. Remove vacuum hose, breather pipe and intake air duct. Loosen throttle cable and cruise control lock nuts to slip throttle and cruise control cables out of accelerator linkage, and remove throttle and cruise control cables. Take care not to bend cables when removing them. Remove brake booster vacuum hose, vacuum hoses and PVC hose. On 1999 models, remove vacuum hose, breather hose and water by-pass hose. On all models, remove intake manifold, valve covers, and front upper cover. Rotate engine until No. 1 piston TDC mark on front camshaft sprocket is align with mark on rear of front cover.
- Push on intake mid rocker arm, it should move independently of primary and secondary intake rocker arm(s) for same cylinder. If intake mid rocker arm does not move, remove mid, primary and secondary intake rocker arms as an assembly. Check that mid and primary rocker arm pistons move smoothly. If any rocker arm needs replacing, replace primary mid and secondary rocker arms as a set, then retest. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise and repeat test for each cylinder at TDC.
- Protect timing belt with shop towel. Ensure shop air compressor pressure is at least 100 psi (7 kg/cm 2 ). Inspect valve clearance See «VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT»(ref-8308-S28795296072000082200000). Remove2 intake shaft mounting bolts and connect Valve Inspection Tools (07VAJ-P8A020A & 07VAJ-P8A010A) and valve inspection air pressure regulator with a 0-100 psi gauge. (Scheme 10) Loosen valve on regulator and apply about 57 psi (4.0 kg/cm 2 ) air pressure. If synchronizing pistons do not move after applying air pressure, move primary or secondary rocker arm up and down manually by rotating crankshaft clockwise.
- Ensure that intake primary and secondary rocker arms are mechanically connected by piston and that mid rocker arm does not move when pushed manually. If any mid rocker arm moves independently of primary or secondary rocker arms replace rocker arms as a set. Remove tools and check for smooth operation of each lost motion assembly. Replace lost motion assembly if it does not move smoothly. (Scheme 11)

Connecting Rod & Crankshaft End Play
- Measure connecting rod end play between large end of connecting rod and crankshaft journal. See «CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS»(ref-8308-S32496631952000082200000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. If end play is not as specified, replace connecting rod and recheck. If end play is still not as specified, replace crankshaft.
- Connect dial indicator to check crankshaft end play. Push crankshaft away from dial indicator. Zero dial indicator. Push crankshaft toward dial indicator and ensure reading is within specification. See «CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS»(ref-8308-S32496631952000082200000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. If end play is not as specified, replace thrust washers or crankshaft as necessary.
Piston Ring Fitting
- Using inverted piston with rings removed, push NEW piston ring into cylinder bore 0.6-0.8" (15-20 mm) from bottom. Measure piston ring end gap using a feeler gauge. Repeat for each ring. See «PISTONS, PINS & RINGS»(ref-8308-S08165624432000082200000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
- If gap is too small, check for proper ring size. If gap is too large, check cylinder bore for excessive wear.
- Using a ring expander, install new rings in proper sequence and position. Install piston rings with manufacturing mark toward top of piston. (Scheme 12) Identify first and second rings by chamfer on edge and ensure they are in proper grooves on piston. Ensure marks are facing upward and rings rotate in grooves without binding.

Main Bearing Selection
Choose correct bearings by matching lower 4 numbers stamped on crankshaft and bars stamped on engine block. (Scheme 13)and (Scheme 14). DO NOT file, shim or scrape bearings or caps to adjust clearance. Use these codes to select appropriate main bearings to be used on each journal. (Scheme 15)

Oil Pressure
With oil temperature at 176°F (80°C), oil pressure should be 10 psi (75 kPa) minimum at idle, and 71 psi (4.9 kg/cm 2 ) minimum at 3000 RPM.
