DESCRIPTION

The transmission shift interlock system prevents driver from moving gearshift lever from "P" position unless ignition switch is in ON position, and prevents ignition key from being removed until gearshift lever is returned to "P" position. On models equipped with Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid, gearshift lever cannot be moved from "P" position while ignition is on until brake pedal is depressed. This prevents accidental movement of gearshift lever from "P" position while engine is running. BTSI solenoid is located in steering column or center console.

SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

Confirm the following system operation

  1. With ignition switch in LOCK position, gearshift lever should be locked in "P" position.
  2. With gearshift lever in "P" position, ignition switch should be allowed movement from LOCK position to any other position, and then back to LOCK position. Ignition key should be removable while in LOCK position.
  3. With ignition switch in ON position, gearshift lever should be allowed movement from "P" position. Models equipped with BTSI solenoid require that brake pedal be depressed for this operation.
  4. With ignition switch in ON position and gearshift lever in any position other than "P" position, ignition key is non-removable. Ignition key is removable only when gearshift lever is returned to "P" position.

If shift interlock system operates as specified, system is functioning properly at this time. If system does not operate as specified, diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM TESTS .
