Automatic Transmission Removal & Installation: Removal & Installation GMC Yukon Denali

Removal ("A" & "B" Series)

  1. Remove coolant recovery bottle, and position aside. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove range selector cable from transaxle manual shaft. Remove range selector cable bracket. Disconnect wiring harness connectors from transaxle.
  2. Remove wiring harness bracket from transaxle side cover. Remove top 4 transaxle-to-engine bolts. On AWD models, remove drive shaft. Remove engine-to-transfer case brace. On all models, install appropriate engine support fixture. Raise and support vehicle. Remove engine cradle. Remove filler tube bracket retaining bolt. Remove torque converter inspection cover. Remove torque converter-to-flexplate bolts.
  3. Disconnect VSS electrical connector. Remove right and left axle shafts. See appropriate FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES. Disconnect transmission cooler lines. Position transmission jack under transmission. On AWD models, remove transfer case-to-engine bolts. On all models, remove lower transaxle bolts and stud. Disconnect neutral safety switch electrical connector. Remove transaxle from vehicle.
  1. Position flexplate alignment hole at 7 o'clock position. Align transaxle filler tube to transmission, and install transaxle into vehicle. Install lower transaxle bolt and stud. Install remaining lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-94687-S00355561872001033100000) .
  2. On AWD models, install transfer case-to-transmission bracket. On all models, install wiring harness bracket to side cover. Connect neutral safety switch electrical connector. Install transaxle brace. Connect transmission cooler lines. Install right and left axle shafts. Connect VSS electrical connector.
  3. Install torque converter-to-flexplate bolts and tighten to specification. Install torque converter cover. Install filler tube bracket retaining bolt. Install engine cradle using NEW bolts. On AWD models, install drive shaft, ensuring special washers (factory equipped) are used on each pair of bolts. Install front wheels, and lower vehicle. Remove engine support fixture.
  4. Install right side engine strut. Install upper transaxle-to-engine bolts and stud. Tighten bolts to specification. Connect transaxle wiring harness. Install range selector cable bracket. Install range selector cable on manual shaft. Install air cleaner assembly and coolant recovery bottle. Fill transfer case and transaxle with appropriate fluid. See appropriate SERVICING article.

Removal ("U" Series)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Loosen, and then tighten fuel filler cap to relieve tank pressure. Remove air cleaner. Remove right engine mount strut, if equipped. Install engine support fixture. Disconnect electrical connectors at transaxle.
  2. Disconnect electrical wiring harness retainer-to-transaxle shift cable bracket. Remove shift cable bracket and heat shield. Remove wire cable/bracket-to-body assembly. Remove park/neutral position switch.
  3. Remove 3 upper transaxle retaining bolts. Remove grounds at engine/transaxle stud. Remove stud. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove engine splash shields. Remove torque converter cover. Remove starter. Remove flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Drain transaxle fluid. Disconnect transaxle cooler lines.
  4. Remove drive axles. See appropriate FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES. Disconnect VSS electrical connector at transaxle. Remove transaxle-to-engine brace. Remove tie rod end cotter pins and nuts. Disconnect tie rod ends from steering knuckle. Remove stabilizer shaft. Remove power steering gear heat shield. Remove power steering gear-to-frame retaining nuts. Remove power steering gear from frame, and secure aside with wire.
  5. Remove power steering cooler pipe from frame, and secure to vehicle with wire. Disconnect front wheel speed sensor connectors. Remove front wheel speed sensor wiring from lower control arms. Remove lower ball joint retaining bolts and nuts. Disconnect lower ball joints from steering knuckles. Remove engine mount-to-frame mounting nuts and washers.
  6. Remove front and rear transaxle mount nuts and washers. Support frame. Remove front and rear frame bolts, and remove frame. Support transaxle assembly. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Separate transaxle from engine. Lower transaxle assembly from vehicle.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Adjust shift cable, and fill transmission with appropriate fluid. See appropriate SERVICING article.

Removal & Installation ("C" & "K" Series)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid. Remove transmission filler tube, and plug opening. Disconnect shift linkage. Mark drive shaft(s) for reassembly reference, and remove from vehicle.
  2. Remove exhaust crossover pipe for clearance, if necessary. Disconnect transmission cooler lines. Remove starter. Support transmission with transmission jack. Remove torque converter cover. Mark flexplate and torque converter for reassembly reference. Remove flexplate-to-torque converter bolts. Remove transmission rear mount.
  3. Remove 2 heat shield-to-transmission bolts. Remove vent hose, fuel lines and electrical connectors from transmission. Remove transfer case shifter and position aside, if equipped. Remove transmission support braces. Note location of braces for reassembly reference.
  4. Remove transmission-to-engine bolts. Note location of brackets or clips, and position them aside. Slide transmission straight back, off locating pins, and install Converter Holding Strap (J-21366). Remove transmission from vehicle.
  5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Prior to torque converter bolt installation, ensure torque converter is against flexplate, and rotates freely by hand. Ensure all reference marks align. Tighten all bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-94687-S00355561872001033100000) . Fill transmission with appropriate fluid. See appropriate SERVICING article.

Removal & Installation ("E" & "J" Series)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. On 4WD models, remove transfer case shift lever knob. On all models, remove transmission shift lever knob. Remove console box. On 4WD models, remove clamp and small boot located on top of transfer case at shift lever opening.
  2. Push downward on case cover (center area around shift lever) and rotate counterclockwise. Remove transfer case shift lever. Remove retaining screws, shift lever boot and bracket.
  3. On all models, remove fluid level indicator from fluid filler tube. Remove throttle body cover. Remove T.V. cable from throttle body linkage. Remove upper starter bolt and nut.
  4. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid. Drain transfer case, if equipped. Place reference marks on drive shaft(s) for reassembly reference. Remove drive shaft(s). Remove shift cable retainer and shift cable from cable bracket. Remove shift cable from manual lever. Remove shift cable bracket bolts. Remove shift cable bracket from transmission.
  5. Remove fluid filler tube, and plug opening. Remove exhaust hanger. Remove oxygen sensor. Remove catalytic converter. Disconnect electrical connections from starter. Remove lower starter bolt. Remove starter. Remove bolts from left transmission-to-engine brace, and remove brace.
  6. Remove flexplate cover. Place reference marks on torque converter and flexplate for reassembly reference. Remove torque converter-to-flexplate bolts. Disconnect oil cooler lines from transmission, and plug.
  7. On 4WD models, remove transfer case skid plate. Remove speedometer cable bolt, bracket and cable from transfer case. Remove ground wire bolt and ground wire from transfer case mount.
  8. On 2WD models, disconnect speedometer cable. On all models, remove crossmember bolts and crossmember. Disconnect electrical connectors and vent tubes. Disconnect wire harness retainer, and position wire harness aside.
  9. On 4WD models, support transfer case. Remove transfer case bolts, and remove transfer case. On all models, support transmission with transmission jack. Remove remaining transmission-to-engine mounting bolts. Slowly separate transmission from engine. Remove transmission from vehicle.
  10. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-94687-S00355561872001033100000) . Ensure reference marks are aligned on drive shaft flanges, yokes, torque converter and flexplate. Adjust shift and throttle valve cables, and fill transfer case and transmission with appropriate fluid. See appropriate SERVICING article.

Removal & Installation ("G" Series)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid. Remove transmission filler tube, and plug opening. Disconnect shift linkage. Mark drive shaft for reassembly reference, and remove from vehicle.
  2. Disconnect transmission cooler lines. Support transmission with transmission jack. Remove torque converter cover. Mark flexplate and torque converter for reassembly reference. Remove flexplate-to-torque converter bolts. Remove transmission rear mount. Remove vent hose, fuel lines and electrical connectors from transmission.
  3. Remove transmission-to-engine bolts. Note location of brackets or clips, and position aside. Slide transmission straight back, off locating pins, and install Converter Holding Strap (J-21366). Remove transmission from vehicle.
  4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Prior to torque converter bolt installation, ensure torque converter is against flexplate, and rotates freely by hand. Ensure all reference marks align. Tighten all bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-94687-S00355561872001033100000) . Fill transmission with appropriate fluid. See appropriate SERVICING article.

Removal & Installation ("L", "M", "S" & "T" Series)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid. Remove transmission filler tube, and plug opening. Disconnect shift linkage. Mark drive shaft(s) for reassembly reference, and remove from vehicle.
  2. On "L" and "T" series, remove transfer case-to-transmission bolts. Disconnect electrical connectors from transfer case. Remove transfer case from transmission. On "L" and "M" series, remove catalytic converter. On "S" and "T" series, remove exhaust crossover pipe.
  3. On all models, disconnect transmission cooler lines. Remove starter. Support transmission with transmission jack. Remove torque converter cover. Mark flexplate and torque converter for reassembly reference. Remove flexplate-to-torque converter bolts. Remove transmission rear mount.
  4. Remove 2 heat shield-to-transmission bolts. Remove vent hose, fuel lines and electrical connectors from transmission. Remove transfer case shifter and position aside, if equipped. Remove transmission support braces. Note location of braces for reassembly reference.
  5. Remove transmission-to-engine bolts. Note location of brackets or clips, and position them aside. Slide transmission straight back, off locating pins, and install Converter Holding Strap (J-21366). Remove transmission from vehicle.
