AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and remove air cleaner. Disconnect Throttle Valve (T.V.) cable from throttle linkage. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid. Disconnect shift linkage at transmission. WARNING: ALWAYS relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact electrical components.
  2. Mark rear drive shaft for installation reference and remove from vehicle. Mark front drive shaft and remove from transfer case, if equipped. Hold rag over disconnect area and relieve fuel line pressure. Remove fuel lines.
  3. Remove transmission support bracket attaching bolts at converter. Position transmission jack under transmission and raise slightly. Remove transmission crossmember-to-mount bolts, crossmember-to-frame bolts and vibration damper (if equipped). Slide crossmember rearward and remove from vehicle. CAUTION: When lowering transmission to gain clearance for additional component removal, use care not to stretch or damage transmission lines, cables or wires.
  4. Remove dipstick tube and seal. Disconnect speedometer cable at transmission. Disconnect vacuum modulator line (if equipped). Lower transmission enough to gain access and disconnect all electrical leads at transmission and electrical harness clips on transmission. Disconnect oil cooler lines and cap openings.
  5. Disconnect transfer case shifter and move aside. Note location of transmission support brackets before removal for reassembly reference. Remove transmission support brackets. Remove torque converter cover and mark flywheel and torque converter to maintain original balance. Remove torque converter-to-flywheel bolts.
  6. Support engine and remove transmission-to-engine bolts. Disconnect transmission assembly, being careful not to damage any cables, lines or linkage. Install the Torque Converter Holding Strap (J-21366) and remove transmission from vehicle.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Mount vibration damper (if equipped) at a 90 degree angle to centerline of transmission.
