DRAINING & REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM

CAUTIONWith a pressurized cooling system, coolant temperature in radiator can be considerably higher than boiling point of solution at atmospheric pressure. Removal of surge tank cap, while cooling system is hot and under high pressure, causes solution to boil instantaneously with explosive force. This will cause solution to spew out over engine, fenders, and person removing cap. Serious bodily injury may result.

Note. A low or high coolant level condition and/or vehicle damage could result if procedures are not followed properly.

Drain & Refill Procedure

  1. Park vehicle on a level surface. Slowly surge tank cap counterclockwise. Stop rotating cap and allow hissing to stop. After all hissing stops, continue turning counterclockwise in order to remove cap.
  2. Open radiator drain cock. Allow system to drain completely. Inspect engine coolant for discoloration. If coolant is discolored, flush cooling system. If coolant is normal in appearance, continue with next step.
  3. Close radiator drain cock. Fill system through surge tank. Pre-mix a 50-60 percent solution of DEX-COOL® and clean, drinkable water. Slowly add pre-mixed solution to surge tank until level is slightly above surge tank split line. Start and operate engine for one minute.
  4. Loosely install surge tank cap. Do not allow system to build-up pressure. Cycle engine from idle to 3000 RPM in 30 second interval until engine coolant reaches 210°F (99°C) and thermostat opens. Turn off engine. Start and operate engine for one minute. Fill surge tank to 1/2" above COLD FULL mark.
  5. Install radiator surge tank cap. Cycle RPM. Idle engine to 3000 in 30-second intervals until engine coolant reaches 210°F (99°C). Turn off engine. Top off coolant, as necessary, to 1/2" above FULL COLD mark. Rinse away any excess coolant from engine and compartment. Inspect concentration of coolant.

Engine Block Draining

  1. Remove left and right engine block coolant drain plugs. Remove engine block coolant heater, if equipped. Allow engine block to drain completely. Do not apply sealant to drain plugs.
  2. Reinstall engine block coolant drain plugs and engine block coolant heater, if equipped. Fill cooling system. Refer to «DRAIN & REFILL PROCEDURE»(ref-136249-S14472775752002030500000) procedure.

Note. In order to remove engine, vehicle needs to be on a hoist. The front tires will also require removal. The vehicle will have to be supported by frame when tires are removed.

ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM

Pressurized lubrication is provided by gear-type oil pump. (Scheme 29) Camshaft drives oil pump through shaft of a gear-driven engine speed sensor. Lubrication flows through external oil cooler then into full-flow oil filter. Non-adjustable oil pressure regulator valve is located in oil pump body. Main oil gallery supplies oil through drilled passages to camshaft and crankshaft bearings. Oil flows through galleries to valve lifters, then through hollow push rods to rocker arms.

Note. Manufacturer recommends changing oil filter at every oil change.
