Steering Wheel and Steering Column: Removal & Installation GMC Sierra 2500

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement»(ref-175035-S40370040062005041400000) .
  2. Remove the steering wheel rear trim cover mounting screws.
  3. Remove the steering wheel rear trim cover.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the steering wheel rear trim cover.
  2. Install the steering wheel rear trim cover mounting screws. Tighten the steering wheel shroud mounting screws to 2 N.m (20 lb in).
  3. Install the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement»(ref-175035-S40370040062005041400000) .

Scheme 22: Removal Procedure
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .
  2. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement»(ref-175035-S40370040062005041400000) .
  3. Remove the tilt lever from steering column. Refer to «Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S17949684472005041400000) . Important: You must check for 2 pan head tapping screws (1) in the lower trim before removal.
  4. If necessary remove the pan head tapping screws (1) that retain the lower steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  5. If no screws are present, gently unsnap the lower trim cover from the upper trim cover.
  6. Tilt the trim cover down and slide it back in order to disengage the locking tabs.
  7. Remove the lower steering column trim cover.
  8. Slide the shift lever seal up the shift lever. Important: You must check for 1 TORX head screw (1) in the upper trim cover (2) before removal.
  9. If necessary, remove the screw (1) that retains the upper steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  10. If no screw is present, gently unsnap the upper steering column trim cover.
  11. Remove the upper steering column trim cover.

Important: If the snap on/off feature on the trim covers was damaged during the removal procedure, you must use screws for the installation procedure.

  1. Install the upper steering column trim cover (2).
  2. If necessary, install the screw that retains the upper steering column trim cover to the steering column. Tighten the upper steering column trim cover retaining screws to 1.5 N.m (13 lb in).
  3. Install the lower steering column trim cover.
  4. Match the tabs slots onto the lower cover with the locking tabs on the upper cover.
  5. Tilt the lower shroud up.
  6. If no screws were present, gently snap the lower trim cover to the upper trim cover.
  7. If necessary, install the screws (1) that retain the lower steering column trim cover to the steering column. Tighten the lower steering column trim cover retaining screws to 3.5 N.m (31 lb in).
  8. Install the tilt lever to the steering column. Refer to «Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S17949684472005041400000) .
  9. Install the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement»(ref-175035-S40370040062005041400000) .
  10. Enable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .

Scheme 23: Removal Procedure
  1. Remove the upper and lower trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S33089871202005041400000) .
  2. Disconnect the park position switch electrical connector.
  3. Remove the park position switch assembly from the linear shift assembly.
  1. Install the park position switch to the linear shift assembly.
  2. Connect the park position switch electrical connector.
  3. Install the upper and lower trim covers.
  1. Install the ignition lock cylinder into the steering column using the following procedure: 1.1. Align the positioning locking tab slot on the lock module assembly to the positioning tab on the ignition lock cylinder. 1.2. Push the lock cylinder in until the locking tab locks in the lock module assembly.
  2. Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S33089871202005041400000) .
  3. Enable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .
  4. Perform the Passlock learn procedure. Refer to Programming Theft Deterrent System Components in Theft Deterrent.
  1. Install the linear shift assembly and secure using 3 TORX® screws. Tighten the 3 TORX® screws to 10 N.m (89 lb in). Important: Lubricate all of the moving parts of the linear shift assembly with synthetic grease.
  2. Install the gear shift lever assembly support bracket onto the steering column support assembly.
  3. Screw the 3 TORX® screws into the gear shift lever assembly. Tighten the 3 TORX® screws to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  4. Insert the cam bushing (2) into the cable shift cam assembly (1).
  5. Install the cable shift cam assembly (1) into the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
  6. Screw the hexagon flange head bolt into the cable shift cam assembly (1). Tighten the hexagon flange head bolt to 18 N.m (14 lb ft).
  7. Install the park lock cable assembly onto the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
  8. Screw the 3 TORX® screws into the shift gate and park lock cable assembly. Tighten the 3 TORX® screws to 6.5 N.m (58 lb in).
  9. Install the shift lever clevis (1) into the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
  10. Install the ball actuator assembly (2) onto the gear shift lever assembly.
  11. Install the hexagon flange head bolt into the gear shift lever assembly. Tighten the hexagon flange head bolt to 18 N.m (14 lb ft).
  12. Connect the park lock cable assembly (1) to the lock module assembly in the following way: 12.1. Place the steering column lock cylinder set into the off position. 12.2. Place the shift lever clevis into the park position. 12.3. Press the locking tab on the end of the park lock cable assembly (1) into the slot in the lock module assembly.
  13. Inspect the park lock cable assembly. 13.1. Put the lock cylinder in the OFF-LOCK position. The shift lever clevis should not be able to shift out of the park position. 13.2. Turn the key to the run position and put the shift lever clevis in the neutral position. 13.3. With the shift lever clevis in the neutral position the lock cylinder should not be able to go into the OFF-LOCK position. 13.4. Put the shift lever clevis into the park position. 13.5. Put the lock cylinder in the OFF-LOCK position and then remove the key.
  14. Install the automatic transmission shift lock actuator. Refer to «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-134984-S21736340612002022200000) .
  15. Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S33089871202005041400000) .
  16. Enable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .
  2. Remove the knee bolster.
  3. Loosen the steering column bracket nuts.
  4. Remove the steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S33089871202005041400000) .
  5. Disconnect the steering column bulkhead connector from the vehicle harness.
  6. Disconnect the gray and the black connectors (2) of the switch from the column bulkhead connector.
  7. Disconnect the automatic transmission shift lock control electrical connector.
  8. Remove the wire harness straps from the steering column wire harness (1).
  9. Disconnect the park position switch electrical connection.
  10. Remove the multifunction switch retaining screws from the switch.
  11. Remove the multifunction turn signal/hazard switch.
  1. Install the multifunction turn signal/hazard switch to the steering column.
  2. Install the screws retaining the multifunction switch to the steering column. Tighten the screws to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
  3. Connect the park position switch electrical connection.
  4. Install the wire harness straps to the steering column wire harness (1).
  5. Install the gray and black wiring harness connectors (1) to the column bulkhead connector.
  6. Connect the automatic transmission shift lock control electrical connector.
  7. Install the steering column bulkhead connector to the vehicle wire harness. Tighten the center screw to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
  8. Install the wire straps on the steering column wire harness.
  9. Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S33089871202005041400000) .
  10. Tighten the steering column bracket nuts. Tighten the nuts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
  11. Install the knee bolster.
  12. Enable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .

Scheme 27: Removal Procedure
  1. Remove the 2 TORX® head screws from the lower column cover.
  2. Remove the lower column cover.
  3. Roll back the seal on the shift lever (1) until the TORX® head screw (2) is exposed.
  4. Remove the TORX® head screw (2).
  5. Remove the knee bolster.
  6. Remove the nuts (1) from the knee bolster deflector bracket NOTE: During removal of the steering column the wire harness retaining clip must be removed and reinstalled after installing the steering column or damage may occur to the wire harness.
  7. Remove the wiring harness retaining pin (4) from the instrument panel.
  8. Remove the wire straps and open the harness insulation to gain access to the electrical wiring.
  9. Remove the wiring from the electrical connector.
  10. Remove the shift lever (1).
  1. Install the shift lever (1).
  2. Connect the shifter electrical connector.
  3. Install the wire straps to the harness.
  4. Install the harness retaining pin (4) to the instrument panel.
  5. Install the knee bolster deflector bracket and nuts (1). Tighten the nuts to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  6. Install the knee bolster.
  7. Install the TORX® head screw. Tighten the screw to 1.5 N.m (13 lb in).
  8. Roll the seal over the TORX® head screw.
  9. Install the lower column cover.
  10. Install the 2 TORX head screws to the lower column cover. Tighten the screw to 3.5 N.m (31 lb in).

  1. Roll back the seal until the TORX® head screw (2) is exposed.
  2. Remove the TORX® head screw (2).
  3. Remove the shift lever (1).
  1. Install the shift lever (1).
  2. Install the TORX® head screw (2). Tighten the screw to 1.5 N.m (13 lb in).
  3. Roll the seal over the TORX® head screw (2).

Pull the lever out of the steering column.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .
  2. Remove the inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel module. Refer to «AIR BAG MODULES»(ref-150723-S07365350762002112000000) .
  3. Remove the horn plunger from the steering column by pressing inward to the stop and rotating horn plunger 90 degrees.
  4. Disconnect the horn contact plate (2) captured screws (1,4) from the steering wheel (3).
  5. Remove the horn switch (2) from the steering wheel (3).
  1. Install the horn switch (2) to the steering wheel (3).
  2. Connect the horn contact plate (2) captured screws (1,4) to the steering wheel (3). Tighten the horn contact plate captured screws to 5.5 N.m (50 lb in).
  3. Install the horn plunger to the steering column.
  4. Install the inflator module. Refer to «AIR BAG MODULES»(ref-150723-S07365350762002112000000) .
  5. Enable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .

  1. Remove the steering wheel shroud. Refer to «Steering Wheel Shroud Replacement»(ref-175035-S41684326512005041400000) . Important: Note the steering wheel wiring harness routing during removal to insure proper installation.
  2. Disconnect the steering wheel wiring harness from the control switch.
  3. Remove the steering wheel wiring harness from the steering wheel.
  1. Install the steering wheel wiring harness to the steering wheel.
  2. Ensure that the steering wheel wiring harness is routed correctly.
  3. Install the steering wheel shroud. Refer to «Steering Wheel Shroud Replacement»(ref-175035-S41684326512005041400000) .

  1. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement»(ref-175035-S40370040062005041400000) .
  2. Remove the horn switch from the steering wheel.
  3. Remove the steering wheel shroud retaining screws from the back of the steering wheel.
  4. Remove the steering wheel shroud from the steering wheel.
  5. Remove the steering wheel control switch mounting screws.
  6. Disconnect the steering wheel control switch (2) electrical connector (1).
  7. Remove the steering wheel control switch from the steering wheel.
  1. Install the steering wheel control switch to the steering wheel.
  2. Install the steering wheel control switch mounting screws. Tighten the mounting screws to 2 N.m (20 lb in).
  3. Connect the electrical connector (1) to the steering wheel control switch.
  4. Install the horn switch to the steering wheel. Tighten the steering wheel horn switch to 5.5 N.m (50 lb in).
  5. Install the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement»(ref-175035-S40370040062005041400000) .
CAUTIONWhen performing service on or around the SIR components or the SIR wiring, follow the procedures listed below in order to temporarily disable the SIR system. Failure to follow the procedure could result in the following
  1. Air bag deployment
  2. Personal injury
  3. Otherwise unneeded SIR system repairs

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .
  2. Remove the inflator module. Refer to «AIR BAG MODULES»(ref-150723-S07365350762002112000000) .
  3. Remove the screws (1) retaining the mass damper to the steering wheel.
  4. Remove the mass damper (2) from the steering wheel (3).
  1. Install the mass damper (2) to the steering wheel.
  2. Install the screws (1) retaining the mass damper to the steering wheel. Tighten the mass damper mounting screws to 3 N.m (25 lb in).
  3. Install the inflator module. Refer to «AIR BAG MODULES»(ref-150723-S07365350762002112000000) .
  4. Enable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .
  1. Align the marks made during the removal procedure on the steering shaft and the steering wheel.
  2. Install the steering wheel onto the steering shaft.
  3. Install the steering wheel nut to the steering shaft. Tighten the nut to 40 N.m (29 lb ft).
  4. Install the horn switch. Refer to «Horn Switch Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S14723061922005041400000) .
  5. Install the inflator module. Refer to «AIR BAG MODULES»(ref-150723-S07365350762002112000000) .
  6. Enable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .

Note. The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.

  1. Install the J 42640 in the steering column lower access hole. Important: Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft components in order to assure proper installation.
  2. Mark the relationship of the bolt and the clamp at both ends of the upper intermediate shaft.
  3. Mark the relationship of the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft.
  4. Remove the nut and the bolt from the lower shaft to the upper shaft connection.
  5. Remove the nut and the bolt (1) from the upper shaft (2) to the steering column connection.
  6. Slide the intermediate shaft down, out of the steering column connection.
  7. Remove the accelerator pedal position sensor, if equipped.
  8. Slide the upper intermediate shaft towards the instrument panel, out of the lower intermediate shaft, and remove the shaft from the vehicle.

Important: If you are installing the same shaft, align the marks and the relationship of the bolt and the clamp made during the removal procedure.

  1. Install the lower end of the upper intermediate shaft through the bulkhead, into the lower shaft.
  2. Install the upper end of the upper intermediate shaft (2) to the steering column.
  3. Install the bolt and the nut (1) at the connection of the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column. Tighten the nut to 47 N.m (35 lb ft).
  4. Install the accelerator pedal position sensor, if equipped. Refer to the following procedures
  5. Install the bolt and nut at the connection of the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft. Tighten the nut to 47 N.m (35 lb ft).
  6. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column lower access hole.

Note. The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.

  1. Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  2. Install the J 42640 in the steering column lower access hole.
  3. Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft components in order to assure proper installation. 3.1. Mark the relationship of the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft. 3.2. Mark the relationship of the lower shaft coupler to the steering gear input shaft.
  4. Remove the bolt from the upper to lower shaft connection.
  5. Remove the bolt from the lower shaft coupler.
  6. Remove the intermediate shaft assembly. Slide the shaft towards the dash in order to get the lower shaft coupler clear of the steering gear input shaft.
  7. Slide the intermediate shaft down out of the upper shaft.

  1. Install the upper end of the intermediate shaft into the upper shaft.
  2. Install the lower end of the intermediate shaft coupler. 2.1. If you are reinstalling the same shaft, align the marks made during the removal procedure. 2.2. Install the lower end of the intermediate shaft coupler onto the steering gear worm shaft.
  3. Install the bolt to the lower shaft coupler.
  4. Install the bolt to the upper end of the shaft. Tighten the upper bolt to 47 N.m (35 lb ft). Tighten the coupler pinch bolt to 47 N.m (35 lb ft).
  5. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column lower access hole.
  1. Install the electronic lock module (1) to the steering column housing.
  2. Install the electronic lock module (1) mounting screws (2).
  3. Install the ignition switch (2) to the electronic lock module (2).
  4. Install the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to «Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S27230500182005041400000) .
  5. Connect the Passlock electrical connector (1) from the lock module
  6. Rotate the key alarm switch connector to the electronic lock module.
  7. Snap the electric park lock (2) onto the electronic lock module (1).
  8. Connect the electric park lock (1) electrical connector (2).
  9. Install the following parts to the steering shaft: 9.1. The turn signal cancel cam (3) 9.2. The shaft lock shield (4)
  10. Install the J 23653-SIR to the steering shaft and compress the shaft lock shield.
  11. Install the lock shield retainer to the steering column shaft.
  12. Remove the J 23653-SIR from the steering column shaft.
  13. Install the SIR coil. Refer to «SIR COIL ASSEMBLY»(ref-150723-S11942726062002112000000) .
  14. Enable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .
  1. Install the electronic lock module (1) to the steering column housing.
  2. Install the electronic lock module (1) mounting screws (2).
  3. Install the ignition switch (2) to the electronic lock module (2).
  4. Install the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to «Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S27230500182005041400000) .
  5. Connect the Passlock® electrical connector from the lock module
  6. Rotate the key alarm switch connector (1) to the electronic lock module.
  7. Install park lock cable (1) to the electronic lock module.
  8. Install the following parts to the steering shaft: 8.1. The turn signal cancel cam (3) 8.2. The shaft lock shield (4)
  9. Install the J 23653-SIR and J 42137 to the steering shaft and compress the shaft lock shield.
  10. Install the lock shield retainer to the steering column shaft.
  11. Remove the J 23653-SIR and J 42137 from the steering shaft.
  12. Install the SIR coil. Refer to «SIR COIL ASSEMBLY»(ref-150723-S11942726062002112000000) .
  13. Enable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .

  1. Use the tilt lever to tilt the column to the UP position.
  2. Remove the steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S33089871202005041400000) .
  3. Remove the tilt spring (1) in the following manner: 3.1. Pry the tilt spring up until a bulge occurs and most of the tilt spring tension is removed. 3.2. Secure the tilt spring with locking pliers and continue prying until the tilt spring disengages from the post of the steering column support assembly (3).
  4. Remove the spring guide (1) from the tilt spring (2).
  1. Lubricate the tilt spring (2) with synthetic grease.
  2. Install the spring guide (1) into the tilt spring (2).
  3. Install the tilt spring (1). 3.1. Install the tilt spring (1) to the post on the steering column support assembly (2). 3.2. Secure the tilt spring (1) with locking pliers.
  4. Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S33089871202005041400000) .

  1. Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position. Set the steering wheel in the LOCKED position.
  2. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR). Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .
  3. Remove the nut and the bolt (1) from the upper intermediate shaft connection and slide the intermediate steering shaft down.
  4. Remove the position sensor connector by using a suitable tool in order to pull the connector down around the right side of the steering column for accessibility. Important: Do not apply force to the sensor and the bearing in a sideways direction.
  5. Remove the position sensor and bearing assembly from the steering column jacket by pulling the assembly straight out.
  6. Remove the position sensor from the clips in the bearing assembly.
  1. Install the position sensor into the bearing assembly. Important: Do not apply force to the sensor and the bearing in a sideways direction.
  2. Install the bearing into the steering column jacket. 2.1. Align the notches on the bearing and the column jacket. 2.2. Seat the bearing fulling into the jacket.
  3. Connect the position sensor connector.
  4. Slide the shaft up to install the bolt and the nut (1) to the upper intermediate shaft to steering column connection. Tighten the upper intermediate shaft connection to 47 N.m (35 lb ft).
  5. Enable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .
  6. For vehicle with Rear Wheel Steering, check the wheel alignment. Refer to «SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-157138) .
CAUTIONIn order to ensure the intended function of the steering column in a vehicle during a crash and in order to avoid personal injury to the driver, perform the following
  1. Tighten the steering column lower fasteners before you tighten the steering column upper fasteners. Failure to do this can damage the steering column.
  2. Tighten the steering column fasteners to the specified torque. Overtightening the upper steering column fasteners could affect the steering column collapse.
  1. Install the steering column to the vehicle.
  2. Install the nuts to upper support brackets. Tighten the nuts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
  3. Install the nuts (1) retaining the knee bolster deflector to the instrument panel. Tighten the retaining nuts to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  4. Install the wiring harness retaining (4) pin to the instrument panel.
  5. Connect the steering column electrical connectors to the vehicle wiring harness. Tighten the steering column bulkhead connector to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
  6. Connect the transmission shift cable (1) to the steering column.
  7. Install the body control module bracket.
  8. Install the knee bolster.
  9. Enable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .
  10. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.

  1. Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  2. Set the steering wheel in the LOCK position.
  3. Remove the intermediate shaft. Refer to «Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement - Lower»(ref-175035-S06283791372005041400000) .
  4. Remove the nuts from the studs.
  5. Remove the seal from the vehicle.
  1. Install the seal to the vehicle.
  2. Install the nuts to the studs. Tighten the nuts to 3 N.m (25 lb in).
  3. Install the intermediate shaft. Refer to «Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement - Lower»(ref-175035-S06283791372005041400000) .

  1. Disable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150723-S35111900572002112000000) .
  2. Remove the steering wheel from the column. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement»(ref-175035-S40370040062005041400000) .
  3. Remove the tilt lever from the lower trim cover. Refer to «Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle»(ref-175035-S17949684472005041400000) . Important: You must check for 2 pan head tapping screws (1,2) in the lower trim cover before removal.
  4. If necessary, remove the 2 pan head tapping screws (1,2) from the lower trim cover (3). Remove the lower trim cover (3). If screws are not present in the lower trim cover, proceed to the next step.
  5. Gently unsnap the lower trim cover from the upper trim cover. Important: You must check for 2 pan head tapping screws (1,2) in the lower trim cover (3) before removal.
  6. If necessary, remove 1 TORX® head screw (1) from the upper trim cover (2). If a screw is not present, remove the upper trim cover (2).

  6. Remove the 2 TORX® head screws (1) from the upper trim cover (2).
  7. Remove the upper trim cover (2) from the steering column.
