Programming the BCM
| IMPORTANT | The vehicle will not start and many other functions may not operate properly if a replacement BCM is not properly set up. The following procedures must be followed |

| IMPORTANT | After the procedure is completed, the personalization settings of the BCM are set to default settings. Inform the customer that the personalization must be set again. |

Learning the Restraints ID
Navigate on the scan tool to Vehicle Control Systems > Module Setup > Body Control Module > Setup SDM Primary Key in BCM, then follow the instructions on the screen.
| IMPORTANT | After programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis |
- Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
- Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
- Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
- Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
- Clear all history DTCs.
Electronic Compass Module Programming and Setup
The electronic compass module requires a calibration after the module is replaced, repaired, or as required for proper module operation. Refer to Compass Calibration and Magnetic Variance .
Engine Control Module Programming and Setup (W/RPO LMM)
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
ECM Reprogramming
- Record Fuel Filter Life.
- Enable ECM Reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-302118-S04909991502008102100000) .
- Reset Fuel Filter Life to the recorded value.
- Start and idle vehicle.
- Using the scan tool, perform the Turbocharger Learn Procedure. Refer to «Turbocharger Learn»(ref-302156-S26001170062008102100000) .
- Perform a DPF Regeneration Enable. Refer to «Exhaust Particulate Filter Cleaning (LMM DPF Service Regeneration)»(ref-302161-S01920738422008102100000) or «Exhaust Particulate Filter Cleaning (LMM DPF Regeneration Enable)»(ref-302161-S08277797462008102100000) .
- If necessary, perform the following: Theft Deterrent-Refer to «Theft Deterrent Control Module Programming and Setup»(ref-302118-S08453553172008102100000) . The Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming-Refer to «Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming»(ref-302156-S20932469062008102100000) . Engine Oil Life Remaining-Use scan tool to reset Engine Oil Life.
Engine Control Module Programming and Setup (GAS)
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
| IMPORTANT | DO NOT reprogram a FlexFuel (E85) vehicle while the fuel composition learn function is active. If necessary, drive the vehicle until the scan tool indicates that the fuel composition learn parameter is inactive. Programming with the fuel composition learn active will result in fuel trim DTCs. |
- If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-302118-S04909991502008102100000) .
- Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
- Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
Fuel Pump Flow Control Module Programming and Setup
If the fuel pump control module (FPCM) is replaced, it must be programmed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
Glow Plug Control Module Programming and Setup
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
Instrument Cluster Programming and Setup
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) must be setup using the service programming system (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
Passenger Presence System Programming and Setup
| IMPORTANT | Before rezeroing the passenger presence system (PPS), the front passenger seat must be completely empty of all items. The presence of any items on the front passenger seat will affect the calibration and operation of the PPS. When rezeroing the PPS, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and dash lights will begin dimming ON and OFF. This is normal operation during the rezeroing procedure and does not indicate additional system faults. |
If the PPS is replaced or serviced, perform the rezeroing procedure for the PPS. Refer to Passenger Presence System Rezeroing for the rezeroing procedure.
Radio Programming and Setup
Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the radio.
Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Programming and Setup
| IMPORTANT | When replacing the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR), the tire pressure monitoring (TPM) information can be learned to the new RCDLR in one of two ways. These two methods are reflected in the selections below. Only choose one of the methods; it is not required to do both methods when replacing the RCDLR. If you choose to perform the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure, Step 1 must be performed BEFORE removing the old RCDLR. This procedure requires that specific TPM information be extracted from the old RCDLR prior to its removal. |
Service Programming System (SPS)
For step-by-step programming instructions, please refer to the techline information system (TIS) terminal.
Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.
| IMPORTANT | DO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors Corporation service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customers concern. It is essential that the Tech 2, MDI and the TIS terminal are both equipped with the latest software before performing service programming system (SPS). Due to the time requirements of programming a controller, it is recommended that an external power source be used to maintain system voltage. Stable battery voltage is critical during programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. To ensure trouble-free programming, GM recommends using one of the following external power sources: A Midtronics PCS charger A fully charged 12V jumper or booster pack disconnected from the AC voltage supply Some modules will require additional programming/setup events performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi or MDI module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO. |
Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module
- FlexFuel (E85) Vehicles The fuel composition learn function is inactive. Programming with the fuel composition learn active will result in fuel trim DTCs. If necessary, drive the vehicle until the scan tool indicates that the fuel composition learn is inactive.
- Vehicle system voltage There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be fully charged before programming the control module. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicles battery, such as the following components: Twilight sentinel Interior lights Daytime running lights (DRL)-Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans, radio, etc.
- The ignition switch must be in the proper position. SPS prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
- Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: - Tech 2 The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits - MDI The USB, Ethernet or Wireless communication port The connection at the data link connector (DLC)
- DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
- DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace the control module.
Theft Deterrent Control Module Programming and Setup
- Connect a scan tool to the vehicle in the Pass-thru arrangement.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
- On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions, using the Legacy Pass-Thru method. Ensure the correct programming selection is chosen based on component being replaced or programmed. For this procedure, go to the TDM - Theft Deterrent Module menu and select the proper on-screen options.
- After the programming has completed, turn the ignition OFF for 30 seconds.
- Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
- On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions, using the Legacy Pass-Thru method. Ensure the correct programming selection is chosen based on component being replaced or programmed. For this procedure, go to the V.T.D. Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn menu and choose the Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn, ECM, or PK3 Replaced selection.
- At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.
- Observe the scan tool, after approximately 10 minutes the scan tool will display "Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition". The vehicle is now ready to relearn the key information and/or the passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
- Turn OFF the ignition and wait 2 minutes.
- With a master vehicle key, turn the ignition to the RUN position for 15 seconds, then start the vehicle. The TDM and ECM have now relearned the pre-release password and the challenge/response data.
- With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.
Transmission Control Module Programming and Setup
- The transmission control module (TCM) must be programmed with the proper software/calibrations. Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for TCM programming: The battery is fully charged. The ignition switch is in the RUN position. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.
- Program the TCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.
- If the TCM fails to program, proceed as follows: Ensure that the TCM connection is OK. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version. Attempt to program the TCM. If the TCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the TCM.
