Engine Oil Pan Removal - 4-cyl GMC Cab & Chassis R2500

Astro & Safari Models

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain engine oil. Disconnect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold. Disconnect exhaust hangers. Remove bellhousing inspection plate. Disconnect starter brace and remove starter.
  2. Disconnect transmission oil lines. Remove oil pan retaining bolts. Remove oil pan. Clean gasket surfaces and straighten oil pan sealing flange. For installation, apply a bead of RTV sealer to front corners of oil pan and at corners of oil pan gasket with rear main bearing cap.

2WD "S" Series Models

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle and drain engine oil. Disconnect strut rods. Separate exhaust pipe at the catalytic converter.
  2. Remove torque converter or flywheel cover. Loosen starter-to-block brace bolt. Remove starter. Disconnect transmission lines (if equipped) at oil pan. Remove oil pan retaining bolts and separate oil pan from engine.
  3. Before installing, clean all gasket mating surfaces. Apply thin coat of RTV sealer to entire oil pan sealing flange. Apply an extra bead of sealer to the edges of the lower front seal and behind the rear corner oil pan bolts.

4WD "S" Series Models

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect power steering reservoir at fan shroud. Raise and support vehicle and drain engine oil. Disconnect brake line clips at crossmember. Remove crossmember and disconnect transmission lines. Separate exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold.
  2. Remove catalytic converter hanger and flywheel cover. Remove drive shaft splash shield. Mark idler arm for reinstallation in original position and remove idler arm. Remove steering gear bolts and move steering gear, with linkage, forward. Disconnect front differential housing at mounts and move forward.
  3. Loosen starter-to-block brace bolt. Remove starter. Disconnect front drive shaft at pinion. Remove motor mount through bolts. Raise engine. Remove oil pan retaining bolts. Remove oil pan. Before installing, apply thin coat of RTV sealer to entire oil pan sealing flange.
