Steering Column: Removal & Installation Geo Tracker I

Removal

  1. Ensure front wheels face straight ahead. Disconnect negative battery cable. Pull horn pad from steering wheel by hand. Remove steering wheel retaining nut.
  2. Mark steering wheel and shaft for reassembly reference. Using steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel. Disconnect wires from horn pad contact pad.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure reference marks are aligned. Tighten retaining nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE .

  1. Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-55058-S15904104342001011700000) . Remove covers from steering column.
  2. Disconnect electrical connection from combination switch. Remove electrical wiring retaining straps. Remove combination switch retaining screws and combination switch.

To install, reverse removal procedure.

Ignition switch is incorporated in steering lock. Remove steering column. See STEERING COLUMN . Center punch and drill shear bolts on steering lock assembly. Remove bolts using an extractor. Insert key in ignition switch and turn ignition switch to ON or ACC position. Remove steering lock assembly from steering column.

  1. Rotate steering shaft so slot in steering shaft align with steering lock hole in steering column. Ensure ignition switch is in ON position. Install steering lock assembly on steering column.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position and remove ignition key. Align hub on ignition switch with steering shaft hole. Rotate steering shaft to ensure steering shaft is locked.
  3. Install new shear bolts in steering lock assembly. Tighten bolts until head breaks off bolt. Turn ignition on. Ensure steering shaft rotates smoothly. Install steering column.
  1. Manufacturer recommends removing steering wheel and combination switch before removing steering column. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-55058-S15904104342001011700000) and COMBINATION SWITCH.
  2. Remove steering column covers. Disconnect ignition switch wiring connector. On A/T models, disconnect backdrive cable. On all models, remove 4 bolts securing steering column to bulkhead. Remove bolt at lower joint-to-steering column shaft. Remove steering column mount bolts. Remove steering column assembly.

Note. Measure upper shaft length and lower shaft length to determine if assembly should be replaced. (Схема №1) Replace steering column if upper shaft length is less than 30.63" (778.0 mm). Replace lower shaft if length is less than 11.30" (287.0 mm) for models with power steering or 13.07" (332.0 mm) for models with manual steering.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE .
