ENGINE MECHANICAL
Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or ignition systems, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay.
VALVE CLEARANCE
| CAUTION | Valve clearance should be checked with engine cold. |

VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove valve cover and gaskets. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with zero mark on timing belt cover.
- Valves on No. 1 cylinder should have clearance and be closed. If valves on No. 1 cylinder are not closed, rotate crankshaft one revolution (360 degrees).
- Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between rocker arm and valve stem on intake valves on cylinders No. 1 and 2, and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 1 and 3. Adjust valve clearance if not within specification. See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-19465-S42035418212001010200000) table.
- Adjust valves by loosening lock nut and turning adjustment screw until correct clearance is obtained. Hold adjusting screw while tightening lock nut, and recheck clearance.
- Rotate crankshaft one revolution (360 degrees). Check intake valve clearance on cylinders No. 3 and 4, and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 2 and 4. Valve clearance must be adjusted if not within specification. See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-19465-S42035418212001010200000) table.
- Reverse removal procedure to install remaining components.
IGNITION TIMING

| Tracker | (2) 8 @ 800 | (2) 8 @ 800 |
| (1) If specification differs from emission label, use specification listed on emission label. (2) With jumper wire installed between terminals "C" (Black wire) and "D" (Blue/Red wire) of duty check data link connector, located near front of battery tray. |

IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS(Degrees BTDC @ RPM) (1)
- Start engine, and warm it to normal operating temperature. Turn engine off, but keep ignition on for 5 seconds. Restart engine, and raise engine speed to 2000 RPM for 5 minutes. Return to idle. Ensure all accessories are off and idle speed is within specification. Adjust idle speed first if it is not within specification. See «IDLE SPEED»(ref-19465-S27409835332001010200000) under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE.
- Connect timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire. Remove cap from duty check Data Link Connector (DLC), located near fusible link box, by battery. Connect a jumper wire between terminals "C" (Black wire) and "D" (Blue/Red wire) of duty check DLC. (Scheme 2)
- Check timing mark alignment on crankshaft pulley with timing marks on timing belt cover. Ignition timing must be within specification. See «IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-19465-S12420451992001010200000) table.
- If ignition timing is not as specified, loosen distributor hold-down flange bolts, and rotate distributor to obtain correct ignition timing. Tighten distributor hold-down flange bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m). Recheck ignition timing.
- Turn engine off. Remove jumper wire, and install cap on duty check DLC. Remove test equipment.

IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE
Note. Air/fuel mixture is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM)/Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and is not adjustable.
IDLE SPEED
- Place transaxle in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T) and apply parking brake. Ensure throttle cable has at least.4-.6" (10.-15. mm) of slack in cable. Adjust throttle cable slack (if necessary).
- Ensure all emission hoses, electrical connections and air cleaner are properly installed. Ensure ignition timing is within specification. See «IGNITION TIMING»(ref-19465-S40798721842001010200000). Ensure all accessories are off. Remove cover from idle speed adjusting screw.
- Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Accelerate engine so engine speed exceeds 1500 RPM, then allow to idle. Connect scan tester to duty check Data Link Connector (DLC). Connect a jumper wire between duty check DLC terminal "B" (Blue/Yellow wire), located near fusible link box by the battery, and ground. (Scheme 2) Idle speed should be within specification. Refer to the «IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-19465-S33223592112001010200000) table.
- If idle speed requires adjustment, turn idle speed adjusting screw inward to increase idle speed or outward to decrease idle speed. (Scheme 3)
- On A/C-equipped models, turn A/C to low speed. With A/C operating, idle speed should be within specification. See «A/C IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-19465-S06510504442001010200000) table.
- If idle speed requires adjustment, turn idle speed adjusting screw to obtain correct idle speed. (Scheme 3)
- Turn engine off. Remove jumper wire from duty check DLC. Install idle speed adjusting screw cover (if removed), and remove scan tester.

THROTTLE OPENER
- Ensure transmission is in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T) and parking brake is applied. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Ensure all accessories are off.
- Accelerate engine so engine speed exceeds 1500 RPM, then allow to idle. Connect scan tester to duty check data link connector. Disconnect throttle opener vacuum hose from throttle opener, and plug hose. Engine speed should increase to 2100-2300 RPM.
- If engine speed requires adjustment, turn throttle opener adjusting screw inward to increase or outward to decrease. (Scheme 4) Reconnect throttle opener vacuum hose to throttle opener, and disconnect scan tester.
