Transaxle & Transmission
- Engine must be at normal operating temperature. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake. Place selector lever in Park.
- Start engine and allow engine to idle. Apply brakes, shift through all gears and return selector lever to Park.
- Remove dipstick. Fluid level should be in HOT or FULL HOT range. Add fluid (if necessary) and recheck. DO NOT overfill.
Use Dexron-II ATF.
BACKDRIVE CABLE (PARK LOCK CABLE)
Note. Backdrive system will not allow gearshift to move from Park unless ignition is on. It also prevents ignition key removal unless gearshift is in Park.
Scheme 2
- Remove center console cover. Place gearshift in Park. Loosen inner and outer lock nuts. Pull backdrive cable sheath forward until all slack is removed from inner wire. (Scheme 2)
- While holding backdrive cable sheath forward, hand tighten outer lock nut. Tighten inner lock nut and tighten outer lock nut.
- Ensure ignition key operates from ACC to LOCK position and ignition key can be removed when gearshift is in Park.
- Move transaxle gearshift lever to any other position. Ensure ignition key cannot be turned from ACC to LOCK position. If ignition key will turn, readjust backdrive cable.
Scheme 3
- Remove center console. Solenoid should be adjusted so when ignition switch is in OFF position, solenoid is inoperative. With ignition on and brake pedal depressed, solenoid should be engaged and lock plate will be in correct position. (Scheme 3)
- Clearance between lock plate and detent plate should be more than.04" (1.0 mm). If clearance requires adjustment, loosen solenoid mounting screws and reposition solenoid.
- With ignition off, gearshift should not shift from Park. If manual release lever is pulled with ignition off, gearshift should move from Park to other gear positions.
THROTTLE VALVE CABLE
- Ensure accelerator cable is adjusted correctly. Accelerator cable should not have any end play at throttle body with accelerator at idle position and engine off.
- Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Throttle valve must be in idle position. Remove oil pressure cable cover. Check boot-to-inner cable stopper clearance. (Scheme 4)
- If clearance is greater than.02" (.5 mm), loosen upper lock nuts and adjust cable length. If necessary, use lower lock nuts to change cable length. (Scheme 4) Tighten all lock nuts.
Scheme 4
GEARSHIFT CABLE
- Set parking brake. Move gearshift lever to Neutral. Loosen inner and outer lock nuts. (Scheme 5) Ensure transaxle control lever is in Neutral. Tighten outer lock nut by hand until it contacts control lever.
- Using wrench, tighten inner lock nut. Ensure transaxle operates in all gear positions. Shift transaxle gearshift lever to Park and ensure vehicle will not move.
Scheme 5
NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH
- Set parking brake. Place gearshift in Neutral. Loosen neutral safety switch adjusting bolt. (Scheme 5) Move neutral safety switch back and forth until a click is heard.
- Hold switch at this position and tighten neutral switch adjusting bolt to specification. Ensure starter operates with gearshift lever in Neutral and Park only.
