SERVICE PRECAUTIONS

WARNINGDeactivate air bag system before performing any service operation involving steering column components. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in RESTRAINTS. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.

IGNITION SWITCH

For ignition switch adjustment see appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.

TRANSMISSION RANGE INDICATOR

Note. Two types of transmission control selector indicators are used. A "flag" type is used with the analog instrument cluster and a pointer type is used with the electronic instrument cluster. Except as noted, adjustment for the two types is similar.

  1. Rotate gearshift lever clockwise until it bottoms out in first gear.
  2. Rotate gearshift lever counterclockwise two detents (overdrive position).
  3. Hang a three pound weight on the gearshift lever.
  4. For pointer type, center pointer in the middle of (D) by rotating the thumbwheel located on right-hand side of steering column. (Scheme 60)and (Scheme 61).
  5. For "flag" type indicator, adjust the flag in the overdrive position by rotating the thumb wheel until no red is visible in the calibration window. (Scheme 62)and (Scheme 61). The flag must fully cover the overdrive symbol after adjustment.
  6. Remove three-pound weight from shift control selector lever gearshift lever.
  7. Road test vehicle making sure pointer is positioned as shown when vehicle is operating in indicated range.

COLUMN GEARSHIFT LEVER

LOWER STEERING COLUMN SHROUD

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds. See «LOWER STEERING COLUMN SHROUD»(ref-141798-S07136155632002071000000) and «UPPER STEERING COLUMN SHROUD»(ref-141798-S09808306692002071000000).
  2. Remove two self-tapping screws retaining multi-function switch to steering column tube casting. (Scheme 63) Disengage multi-function switch from casting. Unplug electrical connectors.

STEERING COLUMN (TILT)

STEERING COLUMN LOCK CYLINDER

STEERING WHEEL

  1. Center front wheels to the straight-ahead position.
  2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  3. Pry out two steering wheel spoke covers covering air bag module screws on sides of steering wheel. see scheme 25
  4. Remove two air bag module retaining screws on side of steering wheel from driver side air bag module and lift driver side air bag module away from steering wheel. see scheme 26
  5. Disconnect air bag wire harness connector, horn control wire harness connector, and, if equipped, speed control harness connector. see scheme 27
  6. Remove steering wheel retaining bolt. DISCARD retaining bolt.
  7. Install Steering Wheel Puller (T67L-3600-A) and remove steering wheel. Route contact assembly wire harness through steering wheel as steering wheel is lifted off steering shaft.
  8. Rotate air bag sliding contact to the right or left to engage service lock.

UNIVERSAL JOINT

CAUTIONDo not remove the steering column, steering wheel, and air bag module as an assembly from the vehicle unless the column is locked to prevent rotation. Lower end of steering shaft should be wired to prevent the steering wheel from being rotated and causing the air bag sliding contact to become mis-indexed.
