Heating and Ventilation
The heating and defrosting system
- controls the vehicle air temperature and, during A/C operation, reduces the relative humidity of the air inside the vehicle.
- delivers heated or cooled air to maintain the vehicle interior temperature and comfort level.
- controls the A/C blower motor speed.
- allows temperature to be adjusted individually by the driver and the passenger to maintain comfort.
- uses a reheat method to provide conditioned air to the passenger compartment. All airflow from the blower motor passes through the A/C evaporator core (19860) and the heater core (18476). Temperature is regulated by reheating the air out of the evaporator core to achieve the desired temperature.
- controls the air temperature by regulating the flow of engine coolant to separate halves of the heater core. A dual solenoid actuated valve is used to control the flow of coolant.
The blower motor (19805) draws outside air through the air inlet filter and duct or draws recirculated air through the recirculated air duct.

Heater Core
The heater core consists of fins and tubes arranged to extract heat from the engine coolant and transfer it to air passing through the heater core. The heater core is separated into two sections. Air passing through one section is directed to the driver side of the vehicle, while air passing through the other section is directed to the passenger side of the vehicle. The heater core has separate inlet ports with a common outlet port.
Blower Motor
The A/C blower motor (19805) pulls air from the air inlet and forces it into the evaporator housing and plenum assembly (which is attached to the instrument panel) where it is distributed.
Dual Coolant Control Valve
The dual coolant control valve regulates the flow of engine coolant to each half of the heater core. Two electric solenoids, which are individually actuated by the DATC module, are the control elements. Based on inputs from the DATC module the solenoids cycle open and closed to regulate the coolant flow to the heater core. The solenoids can be cycled at different speeds by the DATC module in order to maintain different temperatures for each half of the heater core. Under certain conditions when heating is not required, the dual coolant flow valve will bypass the heater core by closing both solenoids and routing the coolant back to the engine cooling system. Auxiliary Water Pump
The auxiliary water pump is electrically driven and provides increased coolant flow during low engine speed operation. The pump is also used to circulate coolant after the engine is turned off under certain conditions.

- Remove the auxiliary coolant flow pump. For additional information, refer to «AUXILIARY COOLANT FLOW PUMP»(ref-204569-S20077121482005111300000) .
- Disconnect the heater hose quick disconnect fittings. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-204566) .

- Remove the bolts and position aside the hydraulic cooling fan reservoir.
- Release the clamp and disconnect the heater hose.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Remove the dual coolant flow valve bracket bolts.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the dual coolant flow valve with the hoses and bracket still attached.
- If installing a new dual coolant flow valve, transfer the hoses and the bracket from the old unit to the new unit.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Clean and lubricate the coolant hoses with coolant hose lubricant or plain water only if needed.

- Drain the engine coolant. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-204560) .
- Remove the engine air cleaner outlet tube. .
- Release the clamp and disconnect the upper radiator hose.
- Remove the bolt and position aside the receiver/drier.
- Detach the auxiliary coolant flow pump. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolts.
- Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & HOISTING»(ref-232595-S06496072622006051700000) .
- Release the clamp and disconnect the heater hose at the dual coolant flow valve.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Release the clamp and disconnect the heater hose.
- Remove the auxiliary coolant flow pump with the hoses still attached.
- If a new auxiliary coolant flow pump is to be installed, transfer the heater hoses from the old unit to the new unit. Clean and lubricate the coolant hoses with coolant hose lubricant or plain water only if needed.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Clean and lubricate the coolant hoses with coolant hose lubricant or plain water only if needed.

- Remove the evaporator core housing. For additional information, refer to «HEATER CORE AND EVAPORATOR CORE HOUSING»(ref-204569-S36325797162005111300000) .
- Remove the evaporator core housing to air inlet housing screws.
- Disengage the clip and separate the evaporator core housing from the air inlet housing.
- Remove the screw and remove the blower motor speed control.
- Remove the gasket.
- Remove the nine screws, disengage the clip and separate the housing.
- If necessary, remove the cold air bypass door actuator. For additional information, refer to «CONTROL COMPONENTS»(ref-204571) .
- If necessary, remove the evaporator core air discharge temperature sensor. For additional information, refer to «CONTROL COMPONENTS»(ref-204571) .
- Remove the evaporator core.
- Disconnect the air bypass door actuator connector and position the harness aside.
- Remove the screws.
- Remove the heater core.
- Remove the blower motor. For additional information, refer to «BLOWER MOTOR»(ref-204569-S18254753102005111300000) .
- If necessary, remove the air inlet door actuator. For additional information, refer to «CONTROL COMPONENTS»(ref-204571) .
- To assemble, reverse the disassembly procedure.
