ON-VEHICLE REPAIRS

Various components may be serviced without transmission removal, depending on application. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.

SHIFT CABLE

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Disconnect the shift cable from the Transmission Range (TR) sensor manual control lever. Place the TR sensor manual control lever in the D5 position. (Scheme 51)
  2. This is 3 positions from the most rearward position. Disconnect the shift cable from the gearshift lever. (Scheme 52) Connect the transmission shift cable to the TR sensor manual control lever.
  3. Unlock the adjuster at the end of the cable. (Scheme 53) Connect the shift cable to the shifter and lock the end of the adjuster. Lower the vehicle. Carefully move the TR sensor manual control lever from Park to Low then back to Park and compare with transmission settings.
  4. Verify that the vehicle will start in Park or Neutral and backup lamps illuminate in Reverse. If not, steps 1 and 2 must be repeated and include TR sensor adjustment in Neutral. Adjust as necessary.

TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR

WARNINGSecure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety chain. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
CAUTIONIndex-mark (color paint) the bolts, washers, nuts, and the flex coupling to the transmission flange and the pinion flange to assure assembly in the exact location from which they were removed. Components not assembled in their original locations can cause driveshaft imbalance.

Note. Do not remove the bolts retaining the flex coupling to the driveshaft.

  1. Position the vehicle on a hoist. Place gearshift lever in Neutral position. Remove the exhaust heat shield. Index-mark the front driveshaft pinion flange. Remove the 3 nuts, washers and bolts. (Scheme 54)
  2. Slide the front shaft assembly rearward and support. (Scheme 55) Support the transmission with a transmission jack. Remove the transmission mount and lower the transmission enough to gain access to the Transmission Range (TR) sensor. (Scheme 56)
  3. Disconnect the shift cable. Loosen the TR sensor screws. (Scheme 57) The manual lever must be in the Neutral position. Using the TR sensor alignment gauge, align the TR sensor. (Scheme 58) Tighten the screws in an alternating sequence to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-141346-S23663150352002062000000).
  4. Connect the shift cable. Install the rear transmission support and remove the transmission jack. (Scheme 56) Align the index marks made during removal and position the driveshaft on the transmission flange. (Scheme 54)
  5. Install the driveshaft flex coupling bolts with the head of the bolt seated against the flange, and the nuts seated against the flex coupling. Install the bolts, washers and nuts. Coat the nut and bolt threads with threadlock sealer. Install the exhaust heat shield. Lower the vehicle.

EXTENSION HOUSING & SEAL

WARNINGSecure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety chain. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
CAUTIONIndex-mark (color paint) the bolts, washers, nuts, and the flex coupling to the transmission flange and the pinion flange to assure assembly in the exact location from which they were removed. Components not assembled in their original locations can cause driveshaft imbalance.

Note. Do not remove the bolts retaining the flex coupling to the driveshaft.

OIL COOLER

Note. Oil cooler is also referred to as combination oil cooler.

REVERSE SERVO & SOLENOID BODY

For removal & installation procedures, see CONTROL VALVE BODY .

CAUTIONIndex-mark (color paint) the bolts, washers, nuts, and the flex coupling to the transmission flange and the pinion flange to make sure they are installed in the same location. Components not assembled in their original locations can cause driveshaft imbalance. Do not remove the bolts retaining the flex coupling to the driveshaft.
