Electronic Engine Controls
The electronic engine controls consist of the following
- Power control module (PCM)
- Throttle position (TP) sensor
- Idle air control (IAC) valve
- Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
- Camshaft position (CMP) sensor
- Fuel pump driver module
- Fuel injection pressure and temperature sensor
- Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
- Mass air flow (MAF) sensor
- Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
- Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
- Catalyst monitor sensor
- Knock sensor (KS) (4V)
- Output shaft speed (OSS) sensor
- Power steering pressure (PSP) switch (4V)
The PCM
- Accepts input from various engine sensors to compute the required fuel flow rate necessary to maintain a prescribed air/fuel ratio throughout the entire engine operational range.
- Outputs a command to the fuel injectors to meter the appropriate quantity of fuel.
- Determines and compensates for the age of the vehicle and its uniqueness, also automatically senses and compensates in altitude (i.e. from sea level to above sea level).
The TP sensor
- Sends the PCM a signal indicating the throttle plate angle.
- Is the main input to the PCM from the driver.
The IAC valve
- Is used to control engine idle speed.
- Is controlled by the PCM.
The ECT sensor
- Sends the PCM a signal indicating engine temperature.
- Resistance decreases as coolant temperature increases.
The CMP sensor
- Provides camshaft position information which is used by the PCM for fuel synchronization.
The fuel injection pressure and temperature sensor
- Measures the pressure and temperature of the fuel in the fuel supply manifold and sends these signals to the PCM.
- Uses intake manifold vacuum as a pressure reference.
The fuel pump driver module
- Receives signals from the PCM.
- Duty cycles the fuel pump.
The fuel pump relay engages the fuel pump when energized by the powertrain control module through the fuel pump driver module.
The CKP sensor
- Sends the PCM a signal indicating crankshaft position.
- Is essential for calculating spark timing.
The KS 3.0L (4V)
- Is used to detect engine detonation (spark knock).
- Sends a voltage signal to the PCM which retards the ignition timing, as necessary.
The MAF sensor
- Uses a hot wire sensing element to measure the amount of air entering the engine.
- Sends a signal to the PCM to determine the intake air mass. The PCM will then calculate the required fuel injector pulse width in order to provide the desired air/fuel ratio.
The catalyst monitor sensor
- Has the ability to create a voltage signal dependent on exhaust oxygen content.
- Provides feedback information to the PCM used to calculate fuel delivery.
The HO2S
- Monitors oxygen content after it flows through the catalytic converter.
- Provides a voltage to the PCM used to calculate catalytic converter integrity.
The PSP switch
- Is a normally closed switch that opens as pressure increases.
- Is used to send a signal to the PCM to adjust idle speed. This compensates for the additional load on the engine. For additional information, refer to «POWER STEERING»(ref-212094) .
The OSS
- Is able to provide a signal which tells the PCM the vehicle speed. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 4F50N»(ref-212110) .

- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
- Remove the accelerator cable snow shield. Remove the pin-type retainers. Remove the accelerator cable snow shield.
- Disconnect the accelerator cable, speed control actuator cable, and the throttle return spring from the throttle body lever.
- Remove the bolts and position the accelerator cable bracket and cables aside.
- Loosen the clamp and disconnect the hose.
- Detach the spark plug wire retainer.
- Detach the wiring harness from the intake manifold support.
- Release the fuel charging wiring harness from the valve cover studs. Position the wiring harness away from the camshaft position sensor.
- Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the screws and the CMP.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. Remove the electrical connector. Remove the bolt and the CMP sensor.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Rotate the crankshaft until the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of the compression stroke and the TDC mark lines up with the timing mark.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
- Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. For additional information, refer to «CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR - 3.0L (2V)»(ref-212108-S40510986352005122300000) .
- Remove the camshaft synchronizer bolt.
- Remove the camshaft synchronizer.
Scheme 22
- Install the special tool on the camshaft synchronizer by rotating the tool until it engages the notch in the camshaft synchronizer housing and the armature.
- Install the camshaft synchronizer housing assembly so the arrow on the special tool is 38 degrees from the centerline of the engine.
- Install the camshaft synchronizer bolt.

- Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .

- Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & HOISTING»(ref-163061-S26137620762004061700000) .
- Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolts and the CKP sensor.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- With vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & HOISTING»(ref-163061-S26137620762004061700000) .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
- Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING»(ref-165355) .
- Remove the nut and position the power steering pressure line, muffler and bracket assembly out of the way.
- Remove the right front fender splash shield. Remove the screws. Remove the pin-type retainer. Remove the RH front fender splash shield.
- Remove the screws and the generator splash shield.
- Remove the left-hand upper stud bolt and the lower generator bolt. Loosen the right upper stud bolt.
- Pivot the generator away from the engine block.
- Remove the engine-to-transaxle support bracket. Remove the nuts. Remove the bolts. Remove the support bracket.
- Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolt and the CKP sensor.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
- Remove the wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft assembly. For additional information, refer to «WIPERS AND WASHERS»(ref-212151) .
- Remove the intake manifold runner (IMRC) control valve. Disconnect the IMRC valve electrical connector. Remove the IMRC valve retainer screws and the IMRC valve.
- Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) electrical connector and remove the gasket.
- Disconnect the vacuum hose from the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve.
- Remove the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid inboard fastener.
- Loosen the outboard EGR vacuum regulator solenoid retaining screw and rotate the unit out of the way to allow clearance for PCM removal.
- Remove the retaining bolts and the PCM.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the screws and the TP sensor.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Remove the idle air control (IAC) solenoid. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolts and the IAC solenoid.

- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
- Disconnect the fuel injection pressure and temperature sensor electrical connector and the vacuum hose.
- Remove the bolts and the fuel injection pressure and temperature sensor.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-212099) .
- Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the ECT sensor.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-212106) .
- Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
- Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the ECT sensor. Pull upward on the locking tab. Rotate the sensor counterclockwise and remove.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the two retaining screws and the MAF sensor.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector.
- Remove the HO2S from the exhaust manifolds using the special tool. If necessary, lubricate the heated oxygen sensors with lock lubricant to assist in removal.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Apply a light coat of anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the heated oxygen sensors (HO2S).

- Disconnect the knock sensor (KS) electrical connector.
- Remove the bolt and the KS.
