Electronic Engine Controls

The electronic engine controls consist of the following

  1. Power control module (PCM)
  2. Throttle position (TP) sensor
  3. Idle air control (IAC) valve
  4. Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
  5. Camshaft position (CMP) sensor
  6. Fuel pump driver module
  7. Fuel injection pressure and temperature sensor
  8. Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
  9. Mass air flow (MAF) sensor
  10. Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
  11. Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
  12. Catalyst monitor sensor
  13. Knock sensor (KS) (4V)
  14. Output shaft speed (OSS) sensor
  15. Power steering pressure (PSP) switch (4V)

The PCM

  1. Accepts input from various engine sensors to compute the required fuel flow rate necessary to maintain a prescribed air/fuel ratio throughout the entire engine operational range.
  2. Outputs a command to the fuel injectors to meter the appropriate quantity of fuel.
  3. Determines and compensates for the age of the vehicle and its uniqueness, also automatically senses and compensates in altitude (i.e. from sea level to above sea level).

The TP sensor

  1. Sends the PCM a signal indicating the throttle plate angle.
  2. Is the main input to the PCM from the driver.

The IAC valve

  1. Is used to control engine idle speed.
  2. Is controlled by the PCM.

The ECT sensor

  1. Sends the PCM a signal indicating engine temperature.
  2. Resistance decreases as coolant temperature increases.

The CMP sensor

  1. Provides camshaft position information which is used by the PCM for fuel synchronization.

The fuel injection pressure and temperature sensor

  1. Measures the pressure and temperature of the fuel in the fuel supply manifold and sends these signals to the PCM.
  2. Uses intake manifold vacuum as a pressure reference.

The fuel pump driver module

  1. Receives signals from the PCM.
  2. Duty cycles the fuel pump.

The fuel pump relay engages the fuel pump when energized by the powertrain control module through the fuel pump driver module.

The CKP sensor

  1. Sends the PCM a signal indicating crankshaft position.
  2. Is essential for calculating spark timing.

The KS 3.0L (4V)

  1. Is used to detect engine detonation (spark knock).
  2. Sends a voltage signal to the PCM which retards the ignition timing, as necessary.

The MAF sensor

  1. Uses a hot wire sensing element to measure the amount of air entering the engine.
  2. Sends a signal to the PCM to determine the intake air mass. The PCM will then calculate the required fuel injector pulse width in order to provide the desired air/fuel ratio.

The catalyst monitor sensor

  1. Has the ability to create a voltage signal dependent on exhaust oxygen content.
  2. Provides feedback information to the PCM used to calculate fuel delivery.

The HO2S

  1. Monitors oxygen content after it flows through the catalytic converter.
  2. Provides a voltage to the PCM used to calculate catalytic converter integrity.

The PSP switch

  1. Is a normally closed switch that opens as pressure increases.
  2. Is used to send a signal to the PCM to adjust idle speed. This compensates for the additional load on the engine. For additional information, refer to «POWER STEERING»(ref-212094) .

The OSS

  1. Is able to provide a signal which tells the PCM the vehicle speed. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 4F50N»(ref-212110) .

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
  2. Remove the accelerator cable snow shield. Remove the pin-type retainers. Remove the accelerator cable snow shield.
  3. Disconnect the accelerator cable, speed control actuator cable, and the throttle return spring from the throttle body lever.
  4. Remove the bolts and position the accelerator cable bracket and cables aside.
  5. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the hose.
  6. Detach the spark plug wire retainer.
  7. Detach the wiring harness from the intake manifold support.
  8. Release the fuel charging wiring harness from the valve cover studs. Position the wiring harness away from the camshaft position sensor.
  9. Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the screws and the CMP.
  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
  2. Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. Remove the electrical connector. Remove the bolt and the CMP sensor.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Rotate the crankshaft until the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of the compression stroke and the TDC mark lines up with the timing mark.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
  3. Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. For additional information, refer to «CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR - 3.0L (2V)»(ref-212108-S40510986352005122300000) .
  4. Remove the camshaft synchronizer bolt.
  5. Remove the camshaft synchronizer.

Scheme 22: Installation
  1. Install the special tool on the camshaft synchronizer by rotating the tool until it engages the notch in the camshaft synchronizer housing and the armature.
  2. Install the camshaft synchronizer housing assembly so the arrow on the special tool is 38 degrees from the centerline of the engine.
  3. Install the camshaft synchronizer bolt.
  4. Install the CMP sensor. For additional information, refer to «CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR - 3.0L (2V)»(ref-212108-S40510986352005122300000) .
  5. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .

  2. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & HOISTING»(ref-163061-S26137620762004061700000) .
  3. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolts and the CKP sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. With vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & HOISTING»(ref-163061-S26137620762004061700000) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING»(ref-165355) .
  4. Remove the nut and position the power steering pressure line, muffler and bracket assembly out of the way.
  5. Remove the right front fender splash shield. Remove the screws. Remove the pin-type retainer. Remove the RH front fender splash shield.
  6. Remove the screws and the generator splash shield.
  7. Remove the left-hand upper stud bolt and the lower generator bolt. Loosen the right upper stud bolt.
  8. Pivot the generator away from the engine block.
  9. Remove the engine-to-transaxle support bracket. Remove the nuts. Remove the bolts. Remove the support bracket.
  10. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolt and the CKP sensor.
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
  2. Remove the wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft assembly. For additional information, refer to «WIPERS AND WASHERS»(ref-212151) .
  3. Remove the intake manifold runner (IMRC) control valve. Disconnect the IMRC valve electrical connector. Remove the IMRC valve retainer screws and the IMRC valve.
  4. Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) electrical connector and remove the gasket.
  5. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve.
  6. Remove the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid inboard fastener.
  7. Loosen the outboard EGR vacuum regulator solenoid retaining screw and rotate the unit out of the way to allow clearance for PCM removal.
  8. Remove the retaining bolts and the PCM.
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
  2. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the screws and the TP sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Remove the idle air control (IAC) solenoid. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolts and the IAC solenoid.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
  3. Disconnect the fuel injection pressure and temperature sensor electrical connector and the vacuum hose.
  4. Remove the bolts and the fuel injection pressure and temperature sensor.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
  2. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-212099) .
  3. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the ECT sensor.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-212099) .
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-212106) .
  3. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128) .
  4. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
  5. Remove the ECT sensor. Pull upward on the locking tab. Rotate the sensor counterclockwise and remove.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the two retaining screws and the MAF sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector.
  2. Remove the HO2S from the exhaust manifolds using the special tool. If necessary, lubricate the heated oxygen sensors with lock lubricant to assist in removal.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Apply a light coat of anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the heated oxygen sensors (HO2S).

  3. Disconnect the knock sensor (KS) electrical connector.
  4. Remove the bolt and the KS.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
