Scheme 1: Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Locator

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a seventeen-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped to a metal tab riveted to the instrument panel top, upper left of the dash. The VIN number is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label.

Scheme 3: World Manufacturer Identifier

The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer code.

  1. 1FA - Ford Motor Company, USA, passenger car
  2. 1ME - Mercury, USA, passenger car

Scheme 4: Restraint Type

The fourth VIN position is the vehicle restraint type code.

  1. F - Active safety belts - all positions, driver and front passenger air bags
  2. H - Active safety belts - all positions, driver and front passenger air bags with driver and front passenger side impact air bags

Scheme 5: Vehicle Line, Series and Body Type

Positions 5 through 7 indicate vehicle line, series and body type.

  5. M59 - Sable LS-Premium, station wagon

Scheme 6: Engine Type

The eighth VIN position is the engine displacement and number of cylinders.

  1. 2 - 3.0L Vulcan, OHV, EFI, six-cylinder, flex fuel
  2. S - 3.0L, DOHC, EFI, six-cylinder
  3. U - 3.0L Vulcan, OHV, EFI, six-cylinder

Scheme 7: Check Digit

The ninth VIN position is a government-assigned, computer-generated check digit.

The tenth VIN position is the model year code.

  1. 4 - 2004

Scheme 9: Assembly Plant

The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code.

  1. A - Atlanta (Hapeville, Georgia)
  2. G - Chicago (Chicago, Illinois)

Scheme 10: Production Sequence Number

The last six VIN positions are an alphanumeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial and warranty number.

  1. 100001-599999 - Taurus
  2. 600001-999999 - Sable

The vehicle certification (VC) label contains the manufacturer name, the month and year of manufacture, the certification statement, and the VIN. It also includes gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR).

Scheme 13: Paint Codes

The first set of paint code numbers/letters listed, indicate the vehicle primary body color. The second set of numbers/letters listed (if applicable) indicate a two-tone or accent body color. All colors are base coat/clear coat.

  2. C2 - Gold Ash Metallic
  3. CX - Dark Shadow Gray
  4. FS - Spruce Green
  5. FX - Merlot
  6. RJ - Medium True Blue
  7. TS - Silver Frost
  8. UA - Ebony
