Inspection and Verification

Note. Care should be exercised when carrying out repair on or around the accelerator pedal linkage and controls.

1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical damage.
3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
4. If the concern is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to the «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-233706-S35856998052006052600000) .

Symptom Chart

Note. Before using the Symptom Chart, disconnect accelerator cable from the throttle body lever, and disconnect the speed control actuator cable from the throttle body, if equipped.

SYMPTOM CHART

PINPOINT TEST A: ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS HARD TO PUSH DOWN

1. A1 CHECK ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND CABLE TRAVEL Disconnect the cable end from the throttle body linkage. Make sure the disconnected end of the accelerator cable does not come in contact with any of the surrounding parts. Operate the accelerator pedal and shaft by hand. Is the full pedal travel to wide open throttle (WOT) restricted by carpeting, floor mats or other obstruction? Yes : REMOVE the obstruction to pedal travel. No : GO to A2 .
2. A2 CHECK ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND CABLE FOR BINDING NOTE: The accelerator cable should not be lubricated and is not a repairable item. With cable end disconnected, operate the pedal by foot. Is the pedal operation smooth? Yes : See «INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE»(ref-229953) article , for diagnosis and testing of the throttle body. No : CHECK the accelerator pedal and shaft for free operation. INSTALL new accelerator cable as necessary. If accelerator pedal and shaft have a free operation, GO to «PINPOINT TEST B»(ref-233706-S09111120202006052600000) .

PINPOINT TEST B: HIGH ENGINE IDLE SPEED

1. B1 CHECK CABLE CONDITION Disconnect the accelerator cable from the cam at the throttle body. Make sure the disconnected end of the accelerator cable does not come in contact with any of the surrounding parts. Is the cable core wire kinked, frayed or damaged? Yes : INSTALL a new accelerator cable. REFER to «ACCELERATOR CABLE - 3.0L (2V)»(ref-233706-S41727743512006052600000) or REFER to «ACCELERATOR CABLE - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-233706-S37298780232006052600000) . No : GO to B2 .
2. B2 RESTRICTED CABLE MOVEMENT With the cable disconnected from the cam at the throttle body, pull the core wire through its entire travel from the pedal end and then from the throttle end. Is the cable movement rough, sticky or restricted? Yes : INSTALL a new accelerator cable. REFER to «ACCELERATOR CABLE - 3.0L (2V)»(ref-233706-S41727743512006052600000) or REFER to «ACCELERATOR CABLE - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-233706-S37298780232006052600000) . No : GO to B3 .
3. B3 RESTRICTED THROTTLE BODY LEVER MOVEMENT Disconnect the speed control actuator cable from the throttle body lever. Cycle the throttle body lever through its entire range of movement. Is the throttle body lever movement rough, sticky or restricted? Yes : See «INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE»(ref-229953) , for diagnosis and testing of the throttle body. No : REFER to «SPEED CONTROL»(ref-233745) .

1. Disconnect the accelerator pedal cable. Position the accelerator pedal to relieve tension on the accelerator cable. Depress the tabs on the accelerator pedal retaining pin and disconnect the cable.
2. Remove the accelerator pedal. Remove the nuts. Remove the accelerator pedal assembly.
3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

1. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the accelerator pedal. Position the accelerator pedal to relieve tension on the accelerator cable. Depress the tabs on the accelerator pedal retaining pin and disconnect the cable.
2. Remove the accelerator cable splash shield. Remove the pin-type retainers. Remove the splash shield.
3. Disconnect the accelerator cable. Move the throttle cam to wide open throttle (WOT). Remove the accelerator cable slug from the throttle cam. Depress the accelerator cable tabs and remove the accelerator cable from the accelerator cable bracket.
4. Remove the accelerator cable grommet from the bulkhead. Remove the accelerator cable.
5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

1. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the accelerator pedal. Position the accelerator pedal to relieve tension on the accelerator cable. Depress the tabs on the accelerator pedal retaining pin and disconnect the cable.
2. Remove the accelerator cable splash shield. Remove the pin-type retainers. Remove the splash shield.
3. Disconnect the accelerator cable. Move the throttle cam to wide open throttle (WOT). Remove the accelerator cable slug from the throttle cam. Depress the accelerator cable tabs and remove the accelerator cable from the accelerator cable bracket.
4. Remove the accelerator cable grommet from the bulkhead. Remove the accelerator cable.
5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

1. Remove the accelerator splash shield. Remove the pin-type retainers. Remove the splash shield.
2. Disconnect the throttle control linkage. Remove the throttle return spring. Disconnect the speed control cable from the throttle cam. Depress the speed control cable tabs and remove the cable from the cable bracket. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle cam. Depress the tabs and remove the accelerator cable from the cable bracket.
3. Remove the accelerator cable bracket. Remove the bolts. Remove the bracket.
4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-233699) .
2. Disconnect the throttle control linkage. Remove the throttle return spring. Disconnect the speed control cable from the throttle cam. Depress the speed control cable tabs and remove the cable from the cable bracket. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle cam. Depress the tabs and remove the accelerator cable from the cable bracket.
3. Remove the accelerator cable bracket. Remove the bolts. Remove the bracket.
4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
