REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
| CAUTION | DO NOT remove steering column, steering wheel and air bag module as an assembly from vehicle unless column is locked to prevent rotation, or lower end of steering shaft is wired in such a way to prevent steering wheel from rotating. |
Removal
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-95008-S41233685992001033100000). Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Mark steering shaft at 12 o'clock position for installation reference. Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-95008-S32781373412001033100000).
- Remove lower instrument panel steering column cover. Remove lower and upper steering column shrouds. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2). Disconnect clockspring electrical connector from column harness and attach air bag simulator.
- If contact assembly is to be reused, tape contact assembly to prevent rotation. If contact assembly is rotated, clockspring could be damaged internally. see scheme 1 Adjust steering wheel to lowest position and remove tilt lever. Remove ignition switch lock cylinder. See «LOCK CYLINDER (FUNCTIONAL)»(ref-95008-S27852382032001033100000) or «LOCK CYLINDER (NON-FUNCTIONAL)»(ref-95008-S00895124662001033100000). Remove Passive Anti Theft System Transmitter (PATS). Remove ignition key warning switch terminal and wire.
- On vehicles with column shift, detach shift indicator tube. On all vehicles, disconnect electrical connectors and route wire harness out of wire holders on steering column. Pry retaining clips from steering column and remove contact assembly.
Installation
- Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Ensure steering shaft alignment mark is at 12 o'clock position. Install contact assembly.
- If installing original contact assembly, remove tape from contact assembly. If installing NEW contact assembly, remove plastic locking insert.
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Torque bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-95008-S30838868602001033100000) . Connect battery cables. Check AIR BAG light for system faults.

- Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable, and wait one minute for backup power supply energy to deplete. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-95008-S41233685992001033100000) before removing steering wheel.
- Pry open access door on side of steering wheel. Disconnect accessory and air bag module electrical connectors. Using anti-theft socket (501-052), turn pinion shaft 120-130 revolutions to release steering wheel from column shaft. (Scheme 3)
- Mark steering wheel and shaft for reassembly reference. Remove steering wheel. Route wiring through small opening in back of steering wheel as it is removed from column shaft. DO NOT damage wiring.
- Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Route wiring harnesses through small opening in back of steering wheel. Position steering wheel onto steering shaft. Align reference marks. Tighten pinion shaft to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-95008-S30838868602001033100000) .
- Through the steering wheel access door, connect the driver air bag and then the accessory electrical connectors. Close the access door.
- Activate air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-95008-S41233685992001033100000) . Connect positive battery cable. Connect negative battery cable. Check AIR BAG light for system faults.
Scheme 3
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-95008-S41233685992001033100000). Adjust steering wheel to lowest position and remove tilt lever. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2). Remove lock cylinder. See «LOCK CYLINDER (FUNCTIONAL)»(ref-95008-S27852382032001033100000) or «LOCK CYLINDER (NON-FUNCTIONAL)»(ref-95008-S00895124662001033100000).
- Remove upper and lower shrouds. Disconnect electrical connectors from multifunction switch. Remove multifunction switch from housing. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-95008-S30838868602001033100000).
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-95008-S41233685992001033100000) . Remove lower instrument panel steering column cover. Remove instrument panel reinforcement. Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector bolt. Remove ignition switch.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-95008-S30838868602001033100000) . Adjust ignition switch. See «IGNITION SWITCH»(ref-95008-S07054566712001033100000) under ADJUSTMENTS
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-95008-S41233685992001033100000) .
- Turn lock cylinder to RUN position. Locate small hole in casting below lock cylinder. Insert a 1/8" drill bit or punch into hole. Press lock cylinder retaining pin while pulling lock cylinder out of housing.
Turn lock cylinder to RUN position. Press retaining pin and insert lock cylinder into housing. Ensure lock cylinder is fully seated and aligned with interlocking washer. Turn lock cylinder to OFF position. This permits retaining pin to extend into hole in housing. Check lock cylinder operation. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-95008-S41233685992001033100000). Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-95008-S32781373412001033100000). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2). Remove upper and lower column shrouds. Disconnect electrical connector from key warning switch.
- Working through access hole in lower steering column shroud, use a small pilot punch to center punch retaining pin. Using a 1/8" drill, drill out retaining pin. Using channel lock pliers, twist lock cylinder cap until it separates from lock cylinder. Using a 3/8" (9.5 mm) drill bit, drill down middle of ignition lock key slot about 1 3/4" (44 mm) until lock cylinder breaks loose from base of lock cylinder.
- Remove retainer, washer, ignition switch and actuator. Remove shavings from column housing. Inspect column housing. Replace column housing if damaged.
- Install lock cylinder gear, washer and retainer onto lock cylinder bore in column housing. Ensure ignition switch is in RUN position by rotating lock cylinder gear fully clockwise to START position, then releasing. Ensure lock cylinder gear keyway is correctly aligned with slot in ignition switch shaft.
- Turn NEW lock cylinder to RUN position. Press lock cylinder retaining pin located on bottom of lock cylinder. Install lock cylinder. Ensure lock cylinder is fully seated and aligned in interlocking washer.
- Turn lock cylinder to OFF position to release retaining pin into hole in column housing. Connect electrical connectors to key warning switch and ignition switch. Install upper and lower column shrouds. Install steering wheel. Connect battery cables. Ensure vehicle starts in Park and Neutral (A/T), vehicle does not start in Drive or Reverse (A/T), and column locks with ignition switch in LOCK position. Check AIR BAG light for system faults.
- With lock cylinder removed, carefully note position of retainer in lock cylinder bore. Using a screwdriver with a 90-degree bend on tip, insert tip between retainer and washer. Pull retainer out of lock cylinder bore.
- Insert screwdriver into double "D" slot of washer and rotate 90 degrees. Remove washer. Carefully note relation of lock cylinder gear to teeth position on lock actuator assembly. Last tooth of lock cylinder gear should be meshed with last tooth on lock actuator assembly. Remove lock cylinder gear. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Note. All steering column components are assembled with thread locking fasteners. DO NOT substitute fasteners with non-locking type.
- Place wheels in straight-ahead position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-95008-S41233685992001033100000) . Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-95008-S32781373412001033100000) .
- Remove lower instrument panel steering column cover and reinforcement. Remove data link connector. Remove multi-function switch. Disconnect clockspring electrical connector at base of steering column and attach air bag simulator. Remove contact assembly. See «CONTACT ASSEMBLY (CLOCKSPRING)»(ref-95008-S15891448142001033100000) . Disconnect electrical connectors and position aside. Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector bolt.
- On vehicles with column shift, disconnect brake shift interlock electrical connector. Disconnect shift indicator cable from lock cylinder housing by removing 2 retaining screws. Disconnect shift-indicator cable loop from hook on shift control assembly.
- On vehicles with console shift, remove shift interlock actuator from steering column. On all models, remove lower pinch bolts from "U" joint connecting steering shaft to intermediate shaft. Disconnect shift cable from pivot on shift selector lever. Remove shift cable and bracket from lower column mounting bracket.
- While supporting steering column, remove 4 steering column mounting nuts. Remove steering column from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure. Check AIR BAG light for system faults.
