AIR BAG SYSTEM
| CAUTION | Read the following safety precautions before servicing steering columns. |
Always wear safety glasses when servicing vehicle with air bag and when handling air bag.
Air bag system must be disabled before servicing any air bag component. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
When handling air bag module, ensure bag and trim cover are pointed away from your body. This reduces chance of injury in case of accidental air bag deployment. When placing air bag module on bench or other surface, always face air bag and trim cover up, away from surface. This reduces motion of module if accidentally deployed.
Safety precautions must also be observed when handling a deployed air bag. After deployment, air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of inflation gas generant combustion that irritates skin. Always wear gloves and safety glasses when handling air bag. Wash hands with mild soap and water afterward.
DO NOT probe connectors on air bag module. Air bag may deploy causing personal injury.
DO NOT attempt to service air bag module or contact assembly. To correct system malfunctions, replace complete assembly.
After any servicing, ensure AIR BAG light does not indicate any faults.
DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
| WARNING | Both the driver-side and passenger-side air bag modules must be disabled. |
DISABLING SYSTEM
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Wait one minute. This is the time required for backup power supply in diagnostic monitor to deplete its stored energy.
- To remove driver air bag, remove lower instrument panel steering column cover. Disconnect clockspring electrical connector at base of steering column. Attach Air Bag Simulator (418-F403) to vehicle harness side of air bag electrical connector.
- Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-95008-S32781373412001033100000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Release retaining tabs and remove steering wheel rear cover. Remove steering wheel armature nuts and remove armature. Disconnect horn electrical connector. Remove electrical wires from the wire shield retaining clips and position aside. Pry up air bag module backing plate and remove air bag module.
- To disable passenger-side air bag, open glove box door. Press glove box sides inward and remove glove box. Through glove box opening, remove 2 air bag module retaining bolts. Pull trim cover away from instrument panel, but do not remove it. Disconnect passenger-side air bag electrical connector.
- Carefully remove air bag module and place it on bench, with trim cover facing up. Attach simulator to air bag terminals on wiring harness side of passenger-side air bag module electrical connector. If testing or vehicle operation is required, connect positive battery cable, then connect negative battery cable.
ACTIVATING SYSTEM
| CAUTION | Make sure horn wiring is routed out between air bag backing plate and steering wheel. Failure to do so may result in the air bag not deploying correctly. |
- Ensure both battery cables are disconnected. Wait one minute. Remove air bag simulators from side air bags (if equipped) and reconnect electrical connectors. Remove air bag simulators from driver-side air bag and passenger-side air bag wiring harness electrical connector.
- Reconnect clockspring electrical connector at base of steering column. Install air bag module. Install lower instrument panel steering column cover. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-95008-S30838868602001033100000) .
- Reconnect passenger-side air bag electrical connector to air bag module. Install passenger-side air bag module. Tighten passenger air bag retaining bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-95008-S30838868602001033100000) . Connect positive battery cable, then connect negative battery cable. Check AIR BAG light for system faults.
IGNITION SWITCH
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Turn ignition lock cylinder to RUN position by rotating ignition switch lock cylinder approximately 90 degrees from LOCK position.
- Install ignition switch pin onto actuator. It may be necessary to move ignition switch slightly back and forth to align ignition switch mounting holes with lock cylinder housing threaded holes.
MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
Note. Multifunction switch incorporates turn signal, wiper/washer, hazard warning, flash-to-pass, dimmer and turn signal switch functions.
LOCK CYLINDER (FUNCTIONAL)
Note. If lock cylinder is non-functional (lock cylinder cannot be rotated due to missing key or damaged lock cylinder), see LOCK CYLINDER (NON-FUNCTIONAL) .
LOCK CYLINDER (NON-FUNCTIONAL)
Note. If lock cylinder is functional (key is available and lock cylinder turns freely), see LOCK CYLINDER (FUNCTIONAL) .
SHAFT BEARING
Note. Shaft bearing removal and installation procedures are not available from manufacturer.
