Scheme 1: VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT (LS)
  1. Remove valve covers. Rotate engine clockwise to position camshaft lobe away from shim surface. Measure clearance of each valve at base circle and record location. Using a bright color, mark position timing chain in relation to camshaft sprockets.
  2. Remove camshaft thrust cap and rear camshaft cap from camshaft that requires adjustment. Install taller Camshaft Lift Tool (303-659) in place of rear camshaft cap. Hand tighten bolts. Install shorter camshaft lift tool in place of camshaft thrust cap. Hand tighten bolts.
  3. Remove bolts and center camshaft caps. Marks location of each shim with a permanent marker only. Use a rubber-tipped air gun and compressed air, to remove shims. Measure and record thickness of shim.
  4. Shims are marked for thickness. Select new shims and mark installation location. Desired clearance is.0069-.0089" (.175-.225 mm) for intake valves, and.0128-.0148" (.325-.375 mm) for exhaust valves. Select shim as follows: Original shim thickness plus measured clearance, minus desired thickness = required shim thickness.
  5. Apply thin coat of SAE 5-30W motor oil or equivalent to replacement shim. Install shims. Position center camshaft caps, tighten bolts loosely. Remove camshaft lift tool and bolt. Position camshaft journal rear and front thrust caps. Tighten bolts in proper sequence to specification. (Scheme 1)
  6. Rotate crankshaft clockwise. Rotate camshaft 2 full revolutions. Measure new valve clearances and ensure they are within specification. Install valve cover. See «VALVE COVER»(ref-11559-S00695088292000112000000).
